I was hurting. And I was holding Eleanor, waiting for you to come.”

He lowered his eyes.

I remembered the hospital room.

The white blanket.

The little bassinet beside my bed.

The phone in my hand.

I remembered checking the time.

Waiting.

Then checking it again.

My parents had spent nine hours celebrating Medelli's son.

Nine hours.

They had been there for his arrival.

They had been excited.

They had made sure my sister knew how happy they were.

And when I finally reached my father, he told me he was too tired to come meet Eleanor.

I looked at him.

“You told me you didn't have the energy to visit.”

He shifted in his chair.

He said that wasn't what he'd meant.

I shook my head.

“That's what I heard.”

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

For once, he didn't argue.

I looked toward Mom.

“You could have visited us both.”

Her face crumpled.

I continued.

“There wasn't a rule saying you could only love one new grandchild.”

Medelli started crying quietly.

I looked at her.

I wasn't angry that her son had been celebrated.

He deserved to be celebrated.

He was a baby.

He was family.

I wanted my parents to love him.

But I wanted Eleanor to be loved too.

That shouldn't have been difficult.

I turned back to my parents.

“I never asked you to choose between our children.”

Mom wiped her cheeks.

I could see that she wanted to say something.

But I wasn't finished.

“You made it feel like Eleanor mattered less before she was even a day old.”

My father stared at the table.

I remembered how I had felt when Mom finally came to my hospital room.

I'd been hoping she would ask to hold Eleanor.

Instead, she began talking about Medelli's housing problem.

She had looked around my room.

She had seen my exhaustion.

She had known I'd just given birth.

And she still decided that was the moment to tell me my sister would be moving into our house.

I looked at her.

“Then you came to the hospital and started making decisions about where my daughter would live.”

She shook her head slightly.

I continued.

“You didn't even ask whether I was okay first.”

Mom began crying harder.

I felt bad seeing her like that.

That surprised me.

Even after everything, part of me wanted to comfort her.

I wanted to reach across the table.

Tell her I knew she'd been worried about Medelli.

Tell her I understood.

But I stopped myself.

I wasn't responsible for making her comfortable with what she'd done.

The truth could hurt her.

That didn't mean I should stop telling it.

I looked down at my hands.

There was a faint mark on one finger where I'd been holding Eleanor earlier.

I thought about how small she was.

How completely she trusted Ben and me.

I wanted her to grow up knowing that she didn't have to earn attention by becoming useful.

I wanted her to know she could ask for help.

That she could have needs.

That being loved wouldn't depend on how much she was willing to give away.

I looked at my parents again.

“I don't want Eleanor growing up believing she has to be the easy child to deserve kindness.”

My mother covered her mouth.

My father didn't move.

For a moment, the restaurant sounds seemed far away.

I could hear someone moving dishes behind us.

A chair scraped across the floor.

But our table was quiet.

Medelli wiped her face.

Kyle looked down at his hands.

I didn't know what any of them were thinking.

I only knew I had finally said something I should have said years earlier.

I had spent too long accepting the idea that I didn't need as much because I was capable.

I had spent too long feeling guilty whenever I wanted something for myself.

And I had almost allowed that pattern to continue into my daughter's life.

I wasn't going to do that anymore.

I looked at my mother.

“You always said I was strong.”

She nodded through her tears.

I swallowed.

“Being strong didn't mean I stopped needing my parents.”

Nobody answered.

My father kept his eyes lowered.

Mom stared at me.

And for the first time, I didn't rush to fill the silence with an apology.

I let them hear what I'd said.

I let the truth remain on the table between us.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: After I Finally
