7 – Our Attorney Reviewed the Documents, and We Finally Took Back the Access My Parents Had Treated as Their Right

The following week, our attorney contacted us.

I was sitting at the kitchen table when Ben answered the call.

Eleanor had finally fallen asleep.

There was a clean bottle on the drying rack.

A small pile of baby clothes was waiting to be folded.

The house looked lived in.

I liked that.

After everything that had happened, even a little mess made me feel that our home belonged to us again.

Ben put the call on speaker so I could listen.

Our attorney had reviewed the insurance paperwork.

She had also gone through the emails Kyle had provided.

She'd looked at the messages from my mother.

And the recording showing my father and Kyle trying to enter our home.

I listened carefully.

I wanted her to tell us exactly what had happened.

But she was careful.

She said the documents showed serious questions about authorization.

They did not, by themselves, establish who had physically written the signature.

That would require evidence.

I appreciated her caution.

I didn't want to accuse someone based only on anger.

I wanted facts.

The attorney advised us to keep every record secure.

She wanted the insurance dispute documented in writing.

She also recommended making sure our parents no longer had access to the property.

I looked at Ben.

We had already changed the main locks and garage code.

But there were other things to check.

Old keys.

Remaining access information.

Anything that might allow someone to enter.

Our attorney reminded us that the most important thing was to maintain control over our home.

That sounded simple.

It should have been simple.

But I had learned that control could disappear quickly when someone else believed their wishes mattered more than your consent.

After the call, Ben sat beside me.

He looked at the papers spread across the table.

“We should finish securing everything.”

I nodded.

We made a list.

Not a long one.

But every item mattered.

The remaining access codes had to be changed.

The spare keys had to be collected.

The documents needed to be kept together.

And nobody outside Ben and me would have authority to make decisions about Eleanor.

I looked toward the nursery.

I hated that such a list was necessary.

But I felt better having it.

Ben checked the security system again.

He reviewed the codes.

He made sure the old information no longer worked.

I watched him move from one task to another.

He didn't complain.

He didn't tell me my family was too much trouble.

He simply helped me protect what we had built.

I thought about the day we bought the house.

We had been so happy to receive the keys.

I remembered holding them in my hand while Ben signed the final paperwork.

They had been ordinary metal keys.

Nothing impressive.

But they represented years of work.

Years of saying no to things we wanted.

Years of waiting.

I had given my parents one of those keys because I trusted them.

I had never imagined that trust would become a problem.

Now we needed every spare copy returned.

That hurt more than changing the locks.

A code was just a set of numbers.

A key was something I had placed in my mother's hand.

I had given it to her willingly.

And now I needed it back.

Ben helped me arrange that.

We kept the conversation brief.

I didn't want another argument about Medelli.

I didn't want another speech about what parents deserved.

I only wanted the access returned.

My parents were unhappy.

I expected that.

But the keys were collected.

The remaining codes were changed.

And for the first time since the hospital, I could look at our front door without wondering whether my father might appear and try to enter.

That mattered.

I slept a little better afterward.

Not much.

Eleanor still needed feeding through the night.

But the worry was different.

When I heard a sound outside, I no longer immediately imagined the white moving van.

I could remind myself that our home was secure.

The attorney's advice also changed the way I handled messages.

I stopped replying immediately whenever my parents contacted me.

I read what they said.

I considered whether an answer was necessary.

And I kept copies.

At first, that felt cold.

I had never wanted a relationship with my mother that required records.

I had never wanted to think carefully before answering my father.

But the insurance document had my signature on it.

I couldn't ignore that because the people involved were related to me.

I thought often about the missing detail in the signature.

Someone had copied enough of my handwriting to make the form convincing.

But whoever did it hadn't captured everything.

That small mistake had been one of the first things that helped me recognize the document as false.

I kept looking at it.

Not because I enjoyed being angry.

Because I needed to remember that appearances could be misleading.

My mother had presented the arrangement as an act of kindness.

She had called it helping family.

She had spoken about sacrifice.

Yet the written messages showed that she expected me to refuse.

The more I considered that, the more important it became.

She hadn't mistaken my silence for agreement.

She had planned around the possibility that I would say no.

And that was something I couldn't excuse as a misunderstanding.

A few days after the attorney's call, I contacted the hospital again.

I wanted to confirm that our instructions about Eleanor had been followed.

Denise had been kind.

She had reassured us before discharge.

But I wanted the records to be clear.

The hospital confirmed that Eleanor had been released properly.

No unauthorized relative had collected her.

Nobody had been permitted to remove her from our care.

All decisions concerning her discharge had remained with Ben and me.

I felt relieved hearing that.

I hadn't realized how much the earlier conversation with Denise still troubled me.

I remembered her saying that someone identifying herself as the maternal grandmother had asked about taking responsibility for a newborn.

I remembered the questions about identification.

About paperwork.

About whether parents had to be present.

I didn't know exactly what my mother had intended.

And I wasn't going to pretend I did.

But I knew why those questions frightened me.

She had already acted as though she could arrange my home without asking.

I couldn't dismiss the possibility that she might think she could arrange other things too.

When I ended the call, I went into the nursery.

Eleanor was awake.

She was looking toward the side of the crib.

I leaned down.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

She moved her hands.

I smiled.

I thought about how much she depended on us.

She couldn't tell anyone where she wanted to go.

She couldn't refuse a decision.

She couldn't protect herself from an adult who thought they knew best.

That was our job.

Ben and mine.

I picked her up.

She settled against me.

For a little while, I stood there holding her.

I didn't want to become someone who saw danger everywhere.

I didn't want Eleanor growing up afraid of her grandparents.

But I also didn't want her growing up believing she had to surrender her boundaries to keep someone else happy.

I had lived that way for too long.

I wanted something different for her.

Later that afternoon, Ben found me looking at the emails again.

He sat beside me.

“Still trying to understand it?”

I nodded.

There was one question I couldn't stop asking.

Why had my parents been so determined to move Medelli and Kyle into our house?

I understood the financial problems.

I understood the rent increase.

I understood that my parents wanted to help their younger daughter.

But their determination seemed larger than the problem itself.

They had continued after being told no.

They had tried to enter the house.

They had brought movers.

They had used a document that neither homeowner had signed.

Why?

Ben looked at the papers.

“Maybe they thought they could make the decision permanent if they moved fast enough.”

I thought about the email from three weeks before the births.

My mother had written that once Medelli was settled, I wouldn't have the heart to ask her to leave.

Ben's explanation matched those words.

But I still wanted to hear my parents explain themselves.

Not another excuse.

Not another accusation about selfishness.

An actual explanation.

I wanted to know whether they understood what they'd done.

I wanted to know whether they had considered what would happen to Ben.

To Eleanor.

To me.

I didn't think they had.

And that frightened me because it meant the problem wasn't only the attempted move.

It was the way they saw our family.

Medelli needed something.

So I was expected to provide it.

If I refused, the answer wasn't accepted.

It was treated as a problem to be solved.

A week later, my father contacted us.

He wanted everyone to meet.

He said we needed to discuss what had happened and move forward.

I looked at the message for a long time.

My first instinct was to refuse.

I was still recovering.

I was exhausted.

And I didn't trust him to listen.

But I also knew there were questions I wanted answered.

I showed the message to Ben.

He read it carefully.

Then he looked at me.

“Do you want to go?”

I considered it.

Part of me wanted to stay home with Eleanor and never speak about the moving truck again.

Another part wanted to sit across from my parents and make them explain why they had done this.

I told Ben I wasn't sure.

He didn't push.

He suggested that if we agreed, we should meet somewhere neutral.

Not our house.

Not theirs.

Somewhere nobody could claim control over the space.

I thought about that.

Then I nodded.

A public place would be better.

We agreed to meet at a small restaurant.

My parents would come.

Medelli and Kyle would be there too.

I didn't know whether my father genuinely wanted to understand what had happened.

But I was willing to listen.

Before confirming, I looked at Eleanor asleep in her crib.

I thought about the first time my parents should have met her.

I thought about the nine hours they'd spent celebrating Medelli's son.

I thought about the phone call when Dad told me he was too exhausted to visit.

Then I thought about the moving van outside our home.

All of those moments belonged to the same story.

And I was tired of pretending they were separate misunderstandings.

I told Ben we could go.

But I made one thing clear.

I wasn't going to apologize for protecting our home.

He nodded.

“I wouldn't expect you to.”

I looked at the message from Dad again.

Then I sent our answer.

We would meet.

I didn't know what my parents would say.

But this time, I was going into the conversation knowing exactly what I had agreed to.
