You should have.”

She nodded.

I could see the words hurt her.

But she didn't argue.

Kyle sat quietly beside her.

His son was sleeping in the car seat near his feet.

The little blanket had slipped toward one side.

Kyle adjusted it.

I looked at the baby.

He was innocent in all of this.

Just like Eleanor.

Neither child had asked to become part of an argument about money, favoritism, or property.

The adults had created that problem.

And now we had to decide what to do with it.

Medelli took a tissue from the box on the table.

She folded it carefully before using it.

Then she looked at me.

“I've known Mom and Dad treated us differently.”

I felt my chest tighten.

It was the first time she'd said that to me so plainly.

I waited.

She looked embarrassed.

“I didn't think about it much when we were younger.”

I could believe that.

When one person receives most of the attention, it doesn't always feel unusual to them.

It simply feels normal.

Medelli continued.

“Whenever I needed help, they were there. Whenever something went wrong, they tried to fix it.”

I nodded.

I remembered.

I remembered how quickly my parents responded whenever Medelli had a problem.

A difficult class.

An argument with a friend.

An unexpected expense.

They were ready to intervene.

When I struggled, they usually reminded me that I was capable of handling things.

For years, I'd been proud of that difference.

I had mistaken being left alone for being trusted.

Medelli looked at me.

“You never complained much.”

I gave a small, tired smile.

“I learned complaining didn't change anything.”

She lowered her eyes.

I hadn't planned to say that.

But once it was out, I didn't regret it.

I thought about my tuition.

My long shifts.

The years Ben and I spent saving for the house.

My parents had praised me for managing without help.

They had called me responsible.

Independent.

Strong.

Those words had sounded like compliments.

But they also gave my parents a reason not to notice when I needed something.

Medelli looked toward the hallway.

“Mom always said you didn't need as much.”

I nodded.

“She said that to me too.”

There was a quiet pause.

Then I asked her something.

“Did you ever believe I didn't need them?”

She looked at me for a long time.

Finally, she shook her head.

“I don't know. Maybe I just accepted it.”

That answer hurt.

But it was honest.

I could work with honesty.

I couldn't keep working with excuses.

Ben returned carrying Eleanor.

She was awake.

Her eyes were barely open.

She looked small against his chest.

I reached for her.

He placed her gently in my arms.

Medelli sat up a little straighter.

For a moment, she forgot the papers.

She looked at Eleanor with genuine wonder.

“She really is beautiful.”

I looked down at my daughter.

“Thank you.”

Medelli leaned forward slightly.

She didn't reach for her.

She didn't assume she could hold her.

She simply looked.

That small restraint meant more to me than she probably realized.

For days, everyone had been making decisions without asking.

It was a relief to have someone finally wait.

Eleanor moved one hand toward her face.

Medelli smiled.

“She has such tiny fingers.”

I nodded.

“I keep thinking the same thing.”

For a little while, nobody spoke.

Kyle watched his son.

Ben sat beside me.

The room felt different.

Not repaired.

Not normal.

But quieter.

Medelli looked at Eleanor again.

“I should have come to see her right away.”

I nodded.

I wasn't going to pretend otherwise.

My parents had spent nine hours celebrating her son.

They had treated his arrival as the important family event.

Eleanor's birth had been something they could acknowledge later.

When I had called, Dad had been too tired to come meet her.

I still remembered how that felt.

I hadn't forgotten it because something worse happened afterward.

Both things mattered.

Medelli seemed to understand that now.

She wiped her cheeks again.

“I didn't realize how much you were being pushed aside.”

I looked at her.

“You saw some of it.”

She nodded.

“I did.”

I let the silence remain.

There was no need to argue about every moment from our childhood.

The pattern was already clear.

And I didn't want to turn our conversation into a contest over who had suffered more.

I wanted her to understand that I had feelings.

That my daughter mattered.

That being capable didn't mean I was available to be used.

Kyle looked at the folder.

“We're not expecting to stay here.”

I turned toward him.

He continued.

“I want that to be clear. We're going to work out our housing situation ourselves.”

I felt my shoulders relax slightly.

It was the first time anyone from their side had said that without adding a complaint.

I asked whether they still had their apartment.

He nodded.

“Yes.”

Their landlord had increased the rent, but they hadn't been forced to leave.

They were still living there.

The situation was difficult.

But it wasn't the immediate emergency my parents had described.

I thought about my father standing in our driveway.

He had spoken as though refusing to let them move in would leave a newborn without shelter.

That hadn't been true.

Kyle seemed to read the thought on my face.

“We were worried about the money. We weren't being put out that day.”

I nodded.

“That's what I needed to know.”

He looked embarrassed.

“I should have told you that before.”

I didn't disagree.

Medelli adjusted her son's blanket.

She looked at me.

“I was angry when you said no.”

I waited.

She continued.

“I thought you were refusing to help because you didn't want to share what you had.”

I felt a familiar ache.

That was the story my parents had told about me for years.

If I set a limit, I was selfish.

If I worked hard, I thought I was better than everyone.

If I didn't immediately help Medelli, I didn't care about family.

I looked at my sister.

“Have I ever told you I was better than you?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Have I ever said you didn't deserve help?”

Again, no.

“Then why did you believe that?”

She looked down at the tissue in her hands.

“I guess because it's easier to think someone won't help you than to admit you expected something they never offered.”

I sat quietly.

It wasn't a perfect explanation.

But it was closer to the truth than anything I'd heard from her before.

I looked at Eleanor.

She had settled against my arm.

Her little face was relaxed.

I thought about how quickly I would have to learn to set boundaries for her.

Not just with strangers.

With people she would grow up calling family.

That was the hardest part.

I had always imagined my parents being loving grandparents.

I hadn't expected to have to protect my daughter from their decisions.

Medelli watched me.

“Are you going to let Mom and Dad visit her?”

I felt my stomach tighten.

I hadn't made a permanent decision.

But I knew things couldn't return to the way they had been.

I explained that Ben and I were taking things one step at a time.

We needed to know what had happened with the document.

We needed to make sure nobody could enter our home without permission.

And we needed time.

Medelli nodded.

She didn't argue.

I appreciated that.

Kyle looked at Ben.

“Did you get the locks changed?”

Ben nodded.

“Yes.”

“And the garage code?”

“That too.”

Kyle looked ashamed.

“I shouldn't have tried the front door.”

Ben studied him.

“No. You shouldn't have.”

There was another pause.

Kyle didn't defend himself.

He said he had believed they were allowed inside, but he should have verified it with us.

Ben nodded once.

It wasn't forgiveness.

It was acknowledgment.

I looked at the folder again.

One question still bothered me.

“Why did Mom refuse to give you the original agreement?”

Kyle shook his head.

“I don't know.”

He told us that after the confrontation in the driveway, he had begun asking more questions.

He wanted to know when I had signed.

He wanted to know who had prepared the form.

He wanted to see the original document.

My mother had avoided answering.

She kept telling him that I was upset and would eventually calm down.

That was when he started gathering the emails.

I looked at him.

“Did she explain why she was so certain I'd change my mind?”

He shook his head.

“Only that you'd always helped family before.”

I felt tired hearing it.

My history of helping had become evidence that I could be pressured into helping again.

That was not how I wanted to live.

I looked at Medelli.

“I don't want our children growing up thinking love means someone gets to take whatever they need.”

She nodded slowly.

“Neither do I.”

I believed her.

At least, I believed she wanted that.

Whether she could act differently would take time to see.

We talked a little longer.

Not about the house.

About the babies.

Medelli told me how little sleep she was getting.

I told her Eleanor seemed to wake just when I thought I could rest.

Kyle smiled faintly.

Ben admitted he had checked Eleanor's car seat more times than necessary before leaving the hospital.

For a few minutes, we sounded like ordinary new parents.

I hadn't realized how much I missed that.

Then Medelli stood.

Her son was beginning to stir.

Kyle gathered the papers.

But before he could close the folder, I asked whether we could keep copies of the emails.

He nodded immediately.

“Of course.”

He left the printed pages with us.

I thanked him.

It felt strange to thank my brother-in-law for giving me evidence of something my mother had done.

But I meant it.

At the door, Medelli turned toward me.

“I really am sorry, Odalie.”

I looked at her.

I could see that she wanted me to say everything was fine.

Maybe she didn't mean to pressure me.

Maybe she simply needed to hear that I still loved her.

I did.

But I wasn't ready to pretend nothing had happened.

“I believe you're sorry.”

Her eyes filled again.

I continued.

“I just need some time.”

She nodded.

“I understand.”

I hoped she did.

Kyle carried their son to the car.

Medelli followed.

I stood beside Ben and watched them leave.

When the driveway was empty, I closed the door.

Then I went back to the living room.

The papers were still on the table.

I picked up the first email.

Three weeks before the babies were born.

My mother had already decided that my refusal could be managed.

I had spent those weeks preparing to become a mother.

She had spent them preparing to use my home.

I placed the email beside the insurance document.

Then I looked at the missing detail in the forged signature.

I still didn't know exactly who had written it.

But now I knew the plan had started long before my mother walked into my hospital room.

And I knew there were people who had seen enough of that plan to help us establish the truth.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Our Attorney
