3 – My Mother Claimed I Had Signed Away Permission Before Labor, but the Document Contained a Mistake She Never Noticed

I kept looking at the signature.

There was something wrong with it.

At first, I couldn't explain exactly what I was seeing.

The letters looked familiar.

The first part of my name curved the way I normally wrote it.

The final letters had the same general shape.

Anyone glancing quickly at the document might have believed it was mine.

But I knew I hadn't signed it.

I was certain.

Ben sat beside me.

He had stopped packing our hospital bag.

The insurance document was open on his phone.

I asked him to make it larger again.

He did.

I studied the handwriting.

It was close.

Too close to be accidental.

But it wasn't right.

I remembered signing the mortgage papers when we bought the house.

I remembered the thick stack of documents on the table.

Ben and I had been nervous about making a mistake.

I had checked my signature on several pages because I wanted everything to be correct.

Over time, the small detail at the end of my signature had become automatic.

I didn't think about it anymore.

My hand simply made it.

The signature on the insurance form didn't include that detail.

I pointed to the screen.

“Look there.”

Ben leaned closer.

He compared it with another document we had available.

Then he nodded.

“It's missing.”

I felt sick.

Someone hadn't merely written my name.

Someone appeared to have tried to reproduce the way I signed it.

That was different.

It meant someone wanted the document to look as though it had come from me.

I looked at the date.

Saturday.

Everything led back to Saturday.

The moving truck.

The supposed occupancy arrangement.

The conversations with our neighbor.

The attempted entry into our garage.

My mother had spoken as though the move was certain.

Now I understood why.

She believed she had paperwork that would make us accept it.

I was still trying to decide what to do when my phone rang.

Medelli.

I looked at the screen.

Ben glanced at me.

“Answer it.”

I did.

My sister sounded cheerful.

That was the first thing I noticed.

She spoke as though our earlier argument had been resolved.

She said Mom had told her everything was finally sorted out.

Kyle had the moving arrangements ready.

They expected to come to our house on Saturday morning.

I looked at Ben.

He was watching my face.

I asked Medelli what had changed since our last conversation.

She laughed lightly.

“Mom says you've finally come around.”

My hands tightened around the phone.

“I haven't changed my mind.”

Her voice dropped.

“What are you talking about?”

“I never agreed to let you move in.”

Medelli sounded annoyed.

“But she showed us what you signed.”

I stopped moving.

“What did she show you?”

“The agreement.”

I asked her to explain.

She said our mother had shown them a document confirming that Ben and I had agreed to let them stay.

It had my name on it.

And a signature.

I looked toward Ben.

He was no longer moving things around the room.

I could see that he understood what I was hearing.

I asked Medelli to send me a photograph.

She wanted to know why.

“Because I need to see what Mom gave you.”

She hesitated.

Then she agreed.

A photograph appeared on my phone a moment later.

I opened it.

There it was again.

My name.

Our address.

The same agreement.

The same unfamiliar version of my signature.

I enlarged the picture.

The little detail was still missing.

That settled something in my mind.

I didn't need anyone to tell me whether I had signed it.

I knew I hadn't.

I asked Medelli where the document had come from.

She said Mom had given it to them.

Then she added something.

According to Mom, I had signed it before I went into labor.

I sat very still.

Before labor.

I thought about those last days of pregnancy.

I had been tired.

My feet were swollen.

I had been trying to finish work before taking maternity leave.

Ben and I were organizing bills and paperwork.

There were baby clothes to wash.

There was the hospital bag to check.

There were small things everywhere that needed attention.

My mother had visited twice.

I remembered both visits.

During one of them, she had asked whether she could use our printer.

She said hers wasn't working properly.

I had told her she could print what she needed.

At one point, I left papers on the dining table while I went to prepare lunch.

I remembered that because the table had been covered with folders.

I had moved some things aside to make room for the plates.

I hadn't been worried about my mother looking through our paperwork.

She was my mother.

That was the simple truth.

I had trusted her inside our home.

I had trusted her around our belongings.

I had never imagined that she might have a reason to study my signature.

Now I wasn't sure what she had done while I was in the kitchen.

I didn't know whether she had copied anything.

I didn't know who had prepared the document.

But I remembered those papers.

And I remembered how casually I'd left them where she could reach them.

I asked Medelli whether she had been present when I supposedly signed.

She said no.

Mom had only told her about it afterward.

I asked if Kyle had seen me sign.

Again, no.

Everything led back to my mother.

I told Medelli once more that the signature wasn't mine.

She became impatient.

She asked why I kept denying something that was already documented.

I could hear how frustrated she was.

I understood that she'd been planning her future around the promise.

But I was also beginning to understand how little she knew about what had really happened.

I asked her to listen.

I explained that a document with my name on it didn't prove I had agreed to anything.

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she said she needed to talk to Mom.

We ended the call.

I looked at Ben.

He was already holding out his hand.

I gave him the phone so he could save the photograph.

Then I called my mother.

She answered after a few rings.

Her voice was warm.

Almost cheerful.

“Hi, Odalie. How's everything?”

I couldn't understand how she could sound so ordinary.

I told her I had seen the agreement.

There was a pause.

Then she responded as though she was pleased.

“Oh, good. Then you know what we arranged.”

I gripped the edge of the blanket.

“Mom, I didn't sign it.”

Her tone changed immediately.

She said I must be confused.

I repeated myself.

She told me I'd been under a great deal of stress.

I reminded her that I had been pregnant, not incapable of remembering my own decisions.

She sighed.

“You've just had a baby. Of course you're not thinking clearly.”

I looked at Eleanor.

She was sleeping quietly.

I had never felt more certain about anything than I felt about protecting her.

My mother continued talking.

She said labor and lack of sleep could affect how people remembered things.

She suggested we discuss it later, after I had recovered.

I could feel my anger growing.

Not because she was disagreeing with me.

Because she was using the fact that I'd just given birth as a reason not to believe me.

I told her to stop.

She went quiet.

“I know what I signed and what I didn't. You can't dismiss that because I'm tired.”

She answered sharply.

“I am your mother, Odalie. I'm trying to help.”

I asked her to explain how putting my name on an agreement I hadn't authorized counted as helping.

She said Medelli was frightened about money.

She said Kyle was under pressure.

She said they needed stability for their baby.

I listened until she finished.

Then I asked who had prepared the form.

She avoided the question.

I asked again.

She said we'd all be better off if I concentrated on my recovery.

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Did you copy my signature from something else?”

She sounded offended.

“How can you even ask me that?”

“Because the document isn't mine.”

She returned to Medelli.

The rent.

The baby.

The moving arrangements.

Every answer circled around my sister's needs.

None answered the question.

Finally, I told her that if Medelli needed housing, she should help her find housing.

Not take mine.

My mother raised her voice.

She said the arrangements were already in place.

She said people had spent time preparing for Saturday.

She said I was making everyone else's life harder.

I looked at Ben.

He was sitting quietly beside me.

I could see that he was listening.

I spoke more firmly.

“You made commitments you didn't have permission to make. That isn't something I have to fix.”

My mother became furious.

She began talking about everything she and Dad had supposedly given up for the family.

I had heard that argument before.

But this time, something about it felt almost absurd.

Ben and I were paying for our house.

We had bought our furniture.

We had prepared Eleanor's room.

And now my parents were treating those things as resources they could distribute.

I asked why her plan required us to lose control over our own home.

She didn't answer.

The call ended.

I sat with the phone still against my ear for a few seconds.

Then I lowered it.

Ben moved closer and put an arm around me.

Neither of us spoke.

I wanted to believe the document was just an isolated mistake.

Maybe somebody had misunderstood.

Maybe the insurance company had received something incomplete.

Maybe there was a simple explanation.

But the more I remembered, the less likely that seemed.

My mother had said she knew what I signed.

My sister had been shown the agreement.

My father had tried to enter our garage.

And nobody could explain why my signature appeared on a document I had never authorized.

Ben saved everything.

The insurance email.

The photograph Medelli had sent.

The text messages.

The security footage.

I watched him organize them.

I felt embarrassed that we needed to keep records of conversations with my own family.

Then I reminded myself what those conversations were about.

They were about our home.

Our belongings.

Our daughter.

I couldn't pretend they were harmless arguments anymore.

That night, Ben finished packing.

Denise checked on me again.

She confirmed that everything still looked good for discharge the following morning.

I thanked her.

I was so tired I could barely follow the conversation.

After she left, Ben turned down the lights.

I stayed awake for a while.

Eleanor was sleeping beside me.

I watched her small chest rise and fall.

I thought about the nursery waiting at home.

The crib Ben had assembled.

The little rabbit a neighbor had given her.

The neatly folded clothes.

I had spent months preparing that room.

I had imagined bringing our daughter through the front door and showing her the place where she'd grow up.

Now I was wondering whether we'd find someone else's boxes inside.

I looked at Ben.

“Do you think they'll actually try to move in?”

He was quiet for a moment.

“I think they've already tried.”

I knew he was right.

The next morning, we were cleared to leave.

Denise helped us gather the last things.

She checked Eleanor's information and reviewed the discharge instructions.

Before we left, she reminded us that our requests about Eleanor's care and release had been documented.

Nobody outside the people we authorized had been permitted to make those decisions.

I felt relieved hearing that.

Whatever my mother's intentions had been when she asked the nurses about temporary authorization, Eleanor was leaving with us.

Her parents.

Ben carried the car seat.

I walked carefully beside him.

Every step reminded me that I'd recently given birth.

But I didn't mind.

We were going home.

We reached the car.

Ben secured Eleanor's seat and checked it twice.

I sat beside her for a moment before moving into the front passenger seat.

She was asleep by the time we left the hospital.

I watched the streets pass.

I wanted the day to be ordinary.

I wanted to go inside, feed my daughter, and rest.

Ben turned onto our street.

I recognized the houses.

Mrs. Collins's driveway.

The familiar trees.

The corner where we usually slowed down.

Then I saw something parked near our home.

A white moving van.

I felt my stomach drop.

Ben saw it too.

He slowed the car.

There were men standing beside the van.

My father was near them.

Kyle was holding a cardboard box.

And my mother was standing on our front porch.

She had keys in her hand.

I looked at Ben.

Neither of us needed to ask what was happening.

They had come anyway.

<a
