I didn't think I needed to keep bothering you.”

I closed my eyes.

“You should have talked to me before arranging movers.”

“But everything was supposed to be ready.”

“It isn't ready. It's not happening.”

There was silence.

Then her voice changed.

She sounded hurt.

“You know, sometimes you make me feel like you think you're above me.”

I stared at the wall.

I hadn't expected that.

I was sitting in a hospital bed with stitches of pain running through my body every time I moved too quickly.

My baby had been born only recently.

I was trying to understand why my family had been planning to occupy my house.

And somehow I was being accused of looking down on my sister.

“What have I done to make you feel that way?”

“You always have things figured out.”

I waited.

She continued.

“You have Ben. You've got that house. You have your career. You don't understand what it's like when everything gets difficult.”

I looked around the room.

The flowers near the window had been sent by Ben's colleagues.

A neighbor had brought Eleanor a soft stuffed rabbit.

There was a little gift bag from someone at work.

Nothing from my parents.

Not even a card.

I told Medelli that Ben and I had worked for what we had.

She made a bitter sound.

“Right. You always remind everyone how hard you've worked.”

I felt the familiar pressure to apologize.

It was almost automatic.

When Medelli was upset, I was expected to soften my words.

When she needed something, I was supposed to offer help before anyone asked.

When I achieved something, I was meant to be modest enough not to make her feel uncomfortable.

I had spent years following those rules.

But now Eleanor was beside me.

And I couldn't keep following them if it meant giving away her security.

I spoke carefully.

“I'm happy you have a little boy, Medelli. I really am. But being in a difficult situation doesn't mean you can decide that my family has to give you our home.”

She didn't answer.

Then the call ended.

I stared at the screen.

Ben was watching me.

“How did it go?”

I gave him a tired look.

“I don't think she's sending us a thank-you card.”

He smiled faintly.

For a moment, I did too.

Then Eleanor stirred, and I turned toward her.

The ordinary things still needed doing.

Feeding her.

Changing her.

Resting whenever I could.

I wanted to concentrate on those things.

But my phone remained beside me, and I kept looking at it.

I knew the argument wasn't finished.

Around eleven that morning, my father called.

I almost let it ring.

He had always been more direct than my mother.

When he thought I was wrong, he told me.

He rarely asked for my explanation before making up his mind.

But I answered.

I wanted to know what he believed was happening.

He began by saying my mother had told him I was making things difficult for Medelli.

I corrected him.

“I don't want anyone moving into my house. That's different from refusing to help.”

He sounded impatient.

“Why do you always have to turn a straightforward matter into an argument?”

I looked down at Eleanor's blanket.

“Then tell me what the straightforward matter is.”

He explained that Kyle's business was struggling.

Money had become tight.

Their rent was going up.

Finding a different apartment would cost more than they could comfortably manage.

I listened.

I understood why they were worried.

I had no desire to see my sister or her baby without a safe place to live.

But I still couldn't understand how my home had become the answer.

I asked him.

He sounded surprised that I needed an explanation.

“You have more room than they do.”

I looked toward the bassinet.

“Every room in our house is being used.”

He dismissed that immediately.

“A newborn doesn't need an entire bedroom.”

I sat very still.

For a moment, I couldn't find the words.

My daughter had been alive for barely two days.

Already, my father was speaking as though her place in our home mattered less than Medelli's need for space.

I asked whether he thought Eleanor should lose her nursery so my sister could move in.

He complained that I was twisting his meaning.

I asked him to explain it differently.

He became louder.

“Your sister needs help. Families make room for each other.”

I pressed my lips together.

I could feel tears starting again.

I hated that exhaustion made them come so easily.

“Did it ever occur to you to ask Ben and me what we could offer?”

He told me my mother had assured him the matter was handled.

I said she had made promises she had no authority to make.

Then his tone hardened.

“Your mother and I spent years looking after you girls. We'd like to see a little appreciation.”

I stared at the ceiling.

There it was again.

The idea that raising me gave them permanent authority over my choices.

I had heard versions of that argument since I was old enough to disagree.

I told him that I appreciated being raised.

I also told him that appreciation wasn't the same as surrendering ownership of my home.

He called me difficult.

I told him he was demanding something he hadn't earned the right to decide.

Then I ended the call.

My heart was pounding.

Ben sat beside me and took my phone.

He put it on the table.

“Enough for now.”

I nodded.

I was too tired to argue with anyone else.

For a little while, nothing happened.

Denise checked on us.

Eleanor slept.

Ben helped me organize the things we'd need for the night.

I began to think we might finally have a quiet afternoon.

Then Ben's phone made a short alert sound.

He looked at it.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”

He didn't answer immediately.

He opened the home security application.

Then he moved closer so I could see the screen.

Our garage system had recorded an unsuccessful entry attempt.

The time was 2:43 in the afternoon.

Someone had entered our former access code.

The code Ben had changed the day before.

He opened the camera recording.

I recognized the car in the driveway before I saw the person.

My father's car.

I watched him approach our garage.

He stood in front of the keypad and entered the old code.

Nothing happened.

He tried it again.

Then he looked at his phone.

A little later, another vehicle pulled up.

Kyle's.

My stomach tightened.

The two men stood in the driveway talking.

I couldn't hear what they said.

Then Kyle walked toward our front door.

He tried the handle.

He looked through the window.

After that, he returned to his vehicle.

I sat staring at the recording.

My father had gone to our home after I told him nobody was allowed to move in.

He had tried to enter using the access code we gave him for emergencies.

And Kyle had tried our front door.

Ben looked at me.

“They expected to get inside.”

I nodded.

There was no other reasonable explanation for what we had just watched.

I felt frightened.

Not because I believed my father would hurt me.

I was frightened because he seemed to believe he had the right to enter our house whenever he wanted.

And because he had brought Kyle with him.

I looked at Ben.

“I think we need to speak to someone about this.”

Before he could reply, my phone vibrated.

It was my mother.

She wanted to know why our old garage code no longer worked.

She explained that my father had gone over to collect some belongings for Medelli.

I stared at the message.

Belongings.

From our house.

I wrote back asking what he had intended to collect.

Her answer was almost immediate.

A television.

Some furniture.

Several boxes.

Things she believed Medelli would need.

I read the message aloud.

Ben looked at me.

“Those are our things.”

“I know.”

I looked back at the phone.

My mother sent another message asking me not to make a family dispute out of something so simple.

I didn't answer.

I was trying to picture my father walking through our rooms.

Deciding what furniture could be removed.

Deciding which belongings were unnecessary.

Taking things because my sister needed them.

All while I was in the hospital with our newborn daughter.

My chest felt tight.

I had worried that my parents would enter our house without permission.

Now I knew they had tried.

Ben saved the recording.

He also saved screenshots of the entry notification.

I watched him do it.

I didn't ask why.

Something about the situation had changed.

We were no longer talking about a disagreement over whether Medelli could stay with us.

We were dealing with people taking steps to make it happen after being told no.

At about four thirty, Denise brought my discharge papers.

She said that if everything remained stable overnight, I could leave the next morning.

I almost cried with relief.

I wanted to go home.

I wanted to sit in Eleanor's nursery.

I wanted to sleep in my own bed, even if it was only for an hour at a time.

I wanted to close the front door and know that nobody could simply walk through it.

Ben began folding our clothes and arranging the things we'd brought.

I watched him put Eleanor's little blanket into the bag.

It looked so ordinary.

Such a small thing.

Yet I suddenly wanted ordinary more than I wanted anything else.

Then his phone rang.

It was Mrs. Collins.

She lived near us and had been our neighbor since we moved in.

Ben answered cheerfully.

That changed after a few seconds.

He stood still.

Then he asked her to repeat something.

I watched his face.

I could tell it wasn't good news.

He thanked her for calling.

Before ending the conversation, he asked her not to let anyone into our home.

Then he turned toward me.

My parents had told Mrs. Collins that Medelli and Kyle would be moving into our house that weekend.

They had said Ben and I already approved the arrangement.

I stared at him.

Even our neighbor had been told a story we hadn't agreed to.

Ben sat on the edge of the chair.

“There's another thing.”

He opened his email.

He had received a notification from our homeowners' insurance company.

It concerned a request to add new residents to our property policy.

I read the subject line.

Then I looked at Ben.

“What new residents?”

He opened the message.

Someone had contacted the insurance company using my mother's name.

The request concerned Medelli and Kyle.

Our address was listed.

So was Saturday's date.

I felt my hands grow cold.

Ben opened the attached form.

I saw the names.

I saw our address.

I saw the proposed living arrangement.

Then I looked toward the bottom of the page.

There was a signature.

My signature.

At least, that was what someone wanted it to look like.

I stared at the letters.

My name was there.

But I hadn't written it.

And when Ben enlarged the document, we saw that the form didn't merely request an insurance update.

It stated that we had given permission for Medelli and Kyle to live in our home without a fixed end date.

There was also a note claiming that our family could complete the arrangements because the homeowners were unavailable.

I read it several times.

Unavailable.

That was how someone had described Ben and me.

We were in the hospital with our newborn daughter.

We hadn't disappeared.

We hadn't given away our rights.

We hadn't authorized anyone to act for us.

I looked toward Eleanor.

Then back at the signature.

My parents had been planning a move.

They had tried to enter our home.

They had told other people we had agreed.

And now there was a document that made it appear as though I had signed away my right to say no.

I looked at Ben.

“That isn't my signature.”

He nodded.

“I believe you.”

For a moment, those three words were the only thing holding me together.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Mother Claimed I Had Signed Away Permission Before Labor, but
