14 – I Could Still Hear Frank Tally Offering Seventy-Five Dollars, but the Thought of Selling Patch No Longer Felt Like a Simple Calculation

There were days when I wished money didn't matter.

Then I opened my checkbook.

And remembered that wishing didn't change a single number.

I was sitting at the kitchen table one afternoon when I thought about Frank Tally again.

It had been weeks since he drove into our yard.

I could still picture him leaning against his truck.

I could still see him watching Patch graze.

He had looked at the horse and seen an opportunity.

Seventy-five dollars.

Cash.

More than twice the thirty-one dollars I had paid at the auction.

I understood why he'd offered.

Patch had begun looking better.

He was eating.

Maggie had been grooming him.

His coat was cleaner.

And even though the horse still limped at that time, there was an improvement that someone familiar with livestock could notice.

Frank had seen it.

He thought seventy-five dollars was enough to make me sell.

I nearly did.

That was the part I didn't like admitting.

I hadn't told Maggie how seriously I considered the offer.

I had said no.

And afterward, I had tried to act as though the decision came easily.

But it hadn't.

I had gone inside and opened my checkbook.

I had looked at the electric bill.

I had counted what was left.

And I had wondered whether I'd been irresponsible.

There was nothing romantic about having too little money.

I knew that from experience.

A person could believe in kindness and still need to buy groceries.

A person could love an animal and still face bills.

And a grandmother could want to give her granddaughter something good while worrying about whether she could afford to keep it.

Those were the facts of my life.

I wasn't ashamed of having limited money.

But I was ashamed of how often I let the fear of it make me feel helpless.

I looked toward the window.

Patch was outside.

Maggie stood beside him.

She was scratching the white marking near his neck.

The sight brought back the afternoon Frank made his offer.

She had been standing in almost the same place.

I remembered looking toward her before answering.

I hadn't planned to use Maggie as the reason for refusing.

I didn't want to place that responsibility on her.

But I couldn't ignore what caring for Patch had meant to her.

She had been silent for weeks after her father's accident.

Then she began rising before sunrise.

She cleaned the stall.

She carried water.

She brushed his coat.

And she spoke about what she noticed.

Sometimes she even laughed.

That was something I hadn't been able to buy with money.

I closed the checkbook.

Then I went outside.

Maggie looked up as I approached.

"Grandma."

"How's our boy?"

She glanced at Patch.

"Hungry."

I smiled.

"Always?"

"Pretty much."

He lowered his head.

Maggie scratched his neck again.

I watched the way he leaned slightly toward her hand.

He seemed comfortable with her.

That had been true almost from the beginning.

Even when his foot hurt badly, he'd allowed her to handle him.

I thought about that.

His gentle nature had been one of the reasons I'd felt safe letting her help.

But it wasn't the only reason they had become close.

She paid attention to him.

She noticed when he was uncomfortable.

She remembered his habits.

And she didn't ask him to be anything other than the horse he was.

I wondered whether Frank would understand that.

Perhaps he would.

Perhaps not.

I hadn't asked him.

I had simply refused the money.

Maggie glanced toward the house.

"Is something wrong?"

"No."

She looked at me more carefully.

"You're thinking."

I laughed softly.

"That obvious?"

"Yes."

I rested my hand against the fence.

"I was remembering the man who wanted to buy Patch."

Her expression changed.

She looked toward the horse.

"Frank?"

"Yes."

She was quiet.

Then she asked the question I should have expected.

"Is he coming back?"

"I don't know."

She looked worried.

I regretted bringing him up.

I hadn't meant to frighten her.

"Nobody's agreed to sell Patch."

She studied my face.

"Okay."

I could tell she wanted to believe me.

I also knew she remembered the evening when she found me staring at the unpaid electric bill.

She had asked whether we would sell him.

Then she'd worried about losing the house.

I had told her the house was paid for.

She had said I knew what she meant.

And she was right.

I did.

She wasn't worried about the legal ownership of the building.

She was worried about money.

About security.

About what might happen if keeping Patch became too expensive.

I wished I could promise that we would never face another difficult decision.

But I couldn't.

All I could promise was that I would think carefully before making one.

I looked at her.

"We'll keep doing what we can, honey."

She nodded.

Then she returned her attention to Patch.

He lifted his head.

For a moment, the two of them stood quietly together.

I thought about what Frank had seen when he looked at the horse.

He saw a black-and-white animal that was improving.

He saw a price.

And he made an offer.

There was nothing mysterious about that.

But he hadn't seen everything.

He hadn't seen Maggie notice the twisted shoe.

He hadn't been there when she first took the grooming brush.

He hadn't heard her laugh when Patch dropped the cap into the water.

And he hadn't watched Silas remove the iron and discover the infection.

He also hadn't seen that strange turn on the driveway.

At least, not as far as I knew.

I imagined telling him about it.

An old horseshoer had watched Patch move and believed he'd received serious training.

Frank might have been interested.

He might have laughed.

He might have said it didn't change the horse's value.

I didn't know.

I wasn't going to invent his reaction.

Still, the possibility made me examine my own thinking.

If Silas had said nothing about training, would I still feel the same about Patch?

I looked at Maggie.

She was gently brushing dirt from his shoulder.

I knew the answer.

Yes.

I would.

The training was interesting.

It might explain something about Patch's past.

But it wasn't why we kept him.

We kept him because he was suffering and we believed there might be a way to help.

Maggie cared for him before anyone suggested he was unusual.

And I had refused Frank before Silas discovered the infection.

That order mattered to me.

I didn't want to rewrite it in my own memory.

It would have been easy.

Easy to pretend I'd recognized something special at the auction.

Easy to claim I'd known Patch was more than he appeared.

Easy to turn an act of concern into a clever decision.

But that wasn't true.

I had bought him because I couldn't bear to leave him there.

Thirty-one dollars.

A thin horse.

A painful limp.

That was all I knew.

I had not seen greatness.

I had seen suffering.

And I had hoped I could make it smaller.

I looked toward the barn.

Maggie had finished brushing.

She was preparing to take Patch inside.

"Need help?"

"No, Grandma."

She paused.

"Unless you want to."

I smiled.

"I do."

We walked together.

Patch followed Maggie.

His footsteps were more even than they had been in April.

I still noticed every change.

I couldn't help it.

There was a particular sound the gravel made under his hooves.

At first, it had been uneven.

A reminder of the pain in his right front foot.

Now the sound was steadier.

I listened.

Maggie looked back.

"What?"

"Nothing."

She smiled.

"You're listening to him."

"I am."

She nodded as though that made perfect sense.

Maybe it did.

I had spent so many weeks worrying about his hoof that listening had become a habit.

But I was also listening for something else.

The ordinary rhythm of recovery.

The sound of a creature becoming more comfortable in its own body.

I found it reassuring.

We reached the barn.

Maggie stopped.

Patch stopped beside her.

I remembered Silas's reaction to that kind of response.

The old man had recognized training where I saw only obedience.

I wondered what other details he might have understood.

But I didn't ask Patch to do anything more.

He had worked enough for the day.

And we had no reason to test him.

Maggie checked his water.

I looked at the feed.

We made sure everything was ready.

Then we stepped outside.

I looked back once before closing the barn.

Patch stood quietly.

He seemed content to rest.

I thought of Frank's seventy-five dollars again.

The cash would have been useful.

It might have made the bills less frightening for a little while.

But I had refused.

And because I refused, we had been able to learn what was wrong with his foot.

That did not prove every stubborn decision was wise.

I knew better.

Sometimes refusing good advice leads to trouble.

Sometimes a person holds on too long.

I wasn't going to turn my choice into a rule for everybody else.

But in this case, I knew why I was grateful.

Patch was more comfortable.

Maggie was happier.

And we had not stopped looking when the horse appeared to have little hope of improvement.

Later, after supper, I opened the notebook.

I checked the expenses.

I counted what remained for the household.

The work was still uncomfortable.

There was no sudden solution.

But I didn't wish I'd taken Frank's money.

I closed the book.

Then I placed it beside the electric bill.

I thought about how frightened I'd been when Maggie asked whether we might lose the house.

I wanted to be more careful about letting her see that fear.

Not by lying.

Not by pretending every problem had disappeared.

But by remembering that she was a child.

She had already lost her father.

She didn't need to feel responsible for every adult worry in the house.

I went upstairs later and checked on her.

She was quiet.

I could see that she'd settled for the evening.

I stood in the doorway for a moment.

Then I turned away.

Downstairs, the black notebook remained on the table.

Outside, Patch was resting.

I had no more money than I did that morning.

But I had a clearer understanding of my decision.

Seventy-five dollars was an amount.

It was not the whole answer.

Source: <a
