7 – The Crooked White Marking on Patch’s Hip Kept Drawing My Eye, While Silas’s Questions Made Our Cheap Auction Horse Harder to Understand

I couldn't stop looking at the white marking on Patch's hip.

That sounds foolish now.

It was only a marking.

A crooked patch of white hair against the darker part of his coat.

I had seen it the day I bought him.

I had seen it when Maggie brushed him.

I had seen it every time he turned toward the barn.

There was nothing new about it.

But Silas had studied that part of his body so carefully that I began noticing it differently.

I wondered what he had been thinking.

I didn't know.

And I wasn't going to invent an answer just because I wanted one.

Still, every time Patch turned his hindquarters toward me, my eyes went to that marking.

One afternoon, Maggie noticed.

"Why do you keep looking there?"

I felt embarrassed.

"Silas was studying him."

"His hip?"

"Partly."

She glanced at the marking.

"Maybe he likes the color."

I smiled.

"Maybe."

She stepped closer to Patch.

"He does have funny patches."

"He certainly does."

She ran a hand along his neck.

"That's why I like his name."

I looked at him.

Patch.

It suited him.

Nothing grand.

Nothing impressive.

Just a simple name for a black-and-white horse whose coat looked as though somebody had put pieces together in an uneven pattern.

For weeks, that was all I had needed to know about him.

He was Patch.

He ate.

He needed care.

He liked Maggie.

And he had a sore foot.

Then Silas came.

He removed the badly fitted shoe.

He found the infection.

He watched Patch move.

And suddenly there were questions neither Maggie nor I knew how to answer.

I wondered whether there was anything more to learn from what we'd already seen.

The thought followed me into the kitchen.

It stayed with me while I washed dishes.

It bothered me when I opened the notebook.

But I kept returning to the same point.

I knew where Patch had come from immediately before arriving at our house.

The livestock auction.

I did not know where he had been before that.

I didn't know who had put the shoe on him.

I didn't know who had allowed his teeth to become so troublesome that chewing hurt.

And I didn't know who had trained him to respond to a person's movements with such care.

Those facts were missing.

Silas had asked about them.

I hadn't been able to help.

That bothered me more than I wanted to admit.

I had brought Patch home because he needed somewhere to go.

I hadn't asked many questions about his history.

I had been more concerned with the poor condition standing in front of me.

His ribs.

His limp.

His tired appearance.

And the thirty-one dollars I'd paid.

Now I wondered whether I should have been more curious.

But even if I had asked, I wasn't sure anyone at the auction could have told me much.

I refused to pretend I knew what I hadn't been told.

That afternoon, I stood by the pasture and watched Patch graze.

Maggie was nearby.

She had finished the chores and was brushing dirt from his shoulder.

I listened to the quiet sound.

The brush moved.

Patch shifted slightly.

Maggie adjusted her position.

Everything looked ordinary.

That was what confused me.

Silas had noticed something extraordinary in an otherwise ordinary movement.

I could remember the turn clearly.

Patch had gathered his hind legs under his body.

He had lowered himself slightly.

Then he had moved around the corner with controlled balance.

It had happened in seconds.

I had spent weeks seeing him struggle to take simple steps.

Then, with much of the pain relieved, he had done something that made Silas stop and remove his hat.

I tried to picture it again.

I could remember what happened.

But I still couldn't explain why it mattered so much.

I had never been trained to read a horse's movement the way Silas could.

That was why I had called him.

There is a strange discomfort in realizing you've been looking at something without really understanding it.

I felt it whenever I watched Patch.

I knew his condition had improved.

I knew he was more comfortable.

But Silas's reaction suggested that his movement carried information I couldn't interpret.

I didn't like being unable to understand.

I had always been a practical woman.

If something needed repairing, I wanted to know what was wrong.

If there was a bill, I wanted to know how much.

If a horse was limping, I wanted to know why.

That last question had finally been answered.

At least in part.

But the question of his training remained.

I looked at Maggie.

"Do you remember what your father taught you about leading a horse?"

She stopped brushing.

"Some of it."

"Did he ever talk about the way a trained horse turns?"

She thought for a moment.

"He showed me how to get one to follow."

I nodded.

"Anything else?"

She shook her head.

"Not really."

I didn't push.

She had been young when he taught her.

Barely ten.

He had been teaching her basic care, not preparing her to judge the ability of a horse whose history was unknown.

I was asking too much.

She returned to brushing.

I stood beside her.

For a while, I watched Patch's face.

He looked peaceful.

The tension that had once seemed part of his expression was less obvious now.

I couldn't know exactly what he felt.

But he was eating.

He was standing more comfortably.

And he no longer seemed to fear every movement of the sore foot.

That was enough evidence for me to believe the care was helping.

I thought about how close I'd come to accepting the limp as permanent.

That embarrassed me.

I hadn't been cruel to Patch.

I hadn't deliberately neglected him.

But I had assumed a great deal from his appearance.

I had looked at a suffering animal and wondered whether age was simply catching up with him.

Silas had found a badly positioned nail and a trapped infection.

Those things were not the same as being worn out.

I wished I had understood sooner.

I looked at the dressing.

Maggie had been careful with it.

She knew that a recovering foot still needed attention.

I was proud of her.

But I also knew that pride was complicated.

I would have given anything for her father to be standing there instead of me.

He would have understood more.

He would have answered her questions.

He might have recognized the problem with the shoe much sooner.

Then I corrected myself.

I couldn't know that either.

Grief has a way of turning the people we've lost into people who would have known every answer.

My son had been knowledgeable.

He had been caring.

But he had been human.

He might have missed something.

He might have needed help from Silas just as I had.

I needed to remember him as he was, not turn his memory into a standard neither Maggie nor I could ever meet.

I watched my granddaughter put down the brush.

She inspected Patch's coat.

Then she looked at his hoof.

"Think he's ready to walk around?"

I hesitated.

"Only gently."

She nodded.

"No sharp turns."

"That's right."

She took the lead and guided him forward.

I watched carefully.

His steps were better.

There was still a reason to be cautious.

I hadn't forgotten Silas's warning.

Patch needed time.

The healing foot mattered more than satisfying our curiosity about what he might have been trained to do.

Maggie didn't ask him for anything complicated.

She simply walked.

He followed.

When she stopped, he stopped.

When she moved again, he moved.

I could see the calmness Silas had described.

Patch didn't seem confused about what she wanted.

He paid attention.

It was a simple exchange between a girl and a horse.

Yet I had begun to understand that simplicity can come from practice.

A movement that appears effortless may have taken a great deal of work to learn.

I thought of Maggie's father teaching her how to clean hooves.

What looked easy when he did it had required instruction.

Where to stand.

How to hold the foot.

When to move away.

What to notice.

The knowledge was invisible until she used it.

Perhaps something similar was true of Patch.

Perhaps the ease of his responses was itself a clue.

I couldn't prove it.

But I began to understand what Silas had been trying to tell us.

Maggie led him back toward the barn.

I followed at a distance.

The late afternoon light made the white markings on Patch's coat stand out.

I looked at the crooked patch on his hip again.

It didn't tell me anything new.

But it reminded me that this horse had existed long before I paid thirty-one dollars for him.

He had been somewhere.

He had belonged to somebody.

He had learned things.

Then something had gone wrong with his care.

By the time I saw him, suffering had covered whatever abilities he might have possessed.

I hadn't known to look beneath it.

Maggie reached the barn.

She stopped and waited while Patch settled.

Then she turned toward me.

"Grandma?"

"Yes?"

"Do you think he knows we helped him?"

I looked at the horse.

He stood beside her.

His ears moved toward her voice.

I considered giving her a comforting answer.

Something certain.

Something about gratitude.

But I didn't know what Patch understood.

"I think he knows he's more comfortable."

Maggie looked thoughtful.

"And he knows us."

"Yes. I believe he does."

She smiled.

That was enough.

I didn't need to claim the horse understood every kind thing we'd done.

His willingness to stand beside her told us something.

His response to her footsteps told us something.

And the way he waited for her after the school bus arrived told us something.

There were forms of trust I didn't need to explain.

We put Patch away for the evening.

I checked his water and feed.

Maggie made certain everything was where it should be.

Then we went inside.

The black notebook was on the table.

I opened it and looked at the expenses again.

I no longer expected the numbers to explain the horse.

They explained what I'd spent.

Nothing more.

I thought of Silas's face when Patch made that turn.

I thought of Frank's offer.

I thought of the little girl who had first noticed the crooked shoe.

And I understood that I'd been fortunate in one important way.

Not because I had bought an extraordinary horse.

I didn't yet know whether that was true.

I was fortunate because Maggie had cared enough to look closely.

Without that, Patch might still have been struggling on an infected foot.

We might never have seen the movement that startled Silas.

And I might have continued believing that an animal's condition told me everything about its ability.

I closed the notebook.

The questions remained.

But I was beginning to accept that I didn't need to answer them all at once.

For now, Patch was healing.

And we were learning how much we still didn't know.

Source: news1.shoptonytv.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: I Finally Understood Why Silas Had Gone Silent in Our Driveway, Though the Most Important Questions About Patch Still Had No Answers

I couldn't stop looking at the white marking on Patch's hip.
