5 – The Old Horseshoer Saw Something in Patch’s Movement That I Had Missed, and I Began Questioning Everything I Thought I Knew About Him

Silas kept his hat in his hands.

That bothered me more than anything he had said.

I had known him long enough to understand that he wasn't a man who became excited over ordinary things.

He had spent most of his life around horses.

Good horses.

Poor horses.

Animals that had been carefully cared for and others that had been neglected until they could hardly stand.

He had seen more than I ever would.

Yet there he was, standing on my gravel driveway, staring at the thirty-one-dollar horse I had brought home from the livestock auction.

Maggie looked from him to me.

"Grandma, what's wrong?"

I shook my head.

"I don't think anything's wrong, sweetheart."

Silas finally put his hat back on.

"No. Nothing wrong with that turn."

He sounded almost distracted.

Maggie glanced at Patch.

"Was he supposed to do something else?"

Silas came closer.

"How did you get him to move like that?"

She looked puzzled.

"I just turned him."

"You didn't pull him around?"

"No."

"You didn't have to keep correcting him?"

Maggie shook her head.

"He followed me."

Silas looked at me.

I had no explanation.

I could barely tell the difference between a horse turning well and one simply turning because someone was leading him.

But I understood Silas's expression.

Something about the movement had surprised him.

And I was beginning to think his surprise mattered.

"Can you explain what you saw?" I asked.

Silas rested one hand against the horse's shoulder.

"He didn't just stumble around that corner."

I waited.

"He knew how to organize himself."

Maggie looked down at Patch's legs.

I did the same.

There was nothing particularly remarkable about them while he was standing still.

They were simply legs.

Strong-looking hind legs, certainly.

And better legs than I had expected to see on such an underfed animal.

But I had been looking at him every day for weeks.

Sometimes being familiar with something makes it harder to notice what matters.

Silas stepped aside.

"Don't make him do it again right now."

Maggie tightened her fingers around the lead.

"Why?"

"That foot's only beginning to recover."

I appreciated hearing that.

For one frightened moment, I had worried he might ask Patch to repeat the movement until we were all satisfied.

That would have been the wrong thing to do.

We had spent too long trying to relieve his suffering.

I wasn't willing to risk undoing that work because we were curious.

Silas seemed to understand.

He glanced at the protective dressing.

"His comfort comes first."

I nodded.

"That's what I want."

He studied me.

"You've done right by him so far, Ruth."

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I remembered how long I had allowed that twisted shoe to remain on his hoof.

I remembered my own uncertainty.

And the morning Maggie had pointed to the iron while I stood beside her without knowing what I was looking at.

"I should've called you sooner."

Silas didn't argue.

He didn't reassure me with something he couldn't know.

He simply looked toward Maggie.

"She spotted something important."

Maggie lowered her eyes.

I knew she was pleased.

I also knew she didn't want us making a fuss.

She had never liked being praised too loudly.

Her father had understood that better than I did.

He used to let her show him what she had learned rather than announce it to everybody.

I was still learning how to do the same.

Silas opened his leather bag again.

He checked the things he'd used to treat the hoof.

Then he made sure Maggie and I understood what to do while the area continued healing.

I listened carefully.

Maggie listened even harder.

She asked a question about keeping the foot clean.

Silas answered patiently.

Then she asked another.

I stood beside them and thought about how different she sounded from the little girl who had spent weeks answering me with a shrug.

She was interested.

Not pretending.

Not performing for my benefit.

Interested.

And the reason was standing next to her, quietly shifting his weight.

Patch.

The horse I had nearly convinced myself was too old and too damaged to improve.

I looked at his face.

He didn't look like anything special.

His coat was a little cleaner now.

He had begun eating better.

But he still had the lean, tired appearance of an animal that needed a great deal of care.

Anyone driving past our pasture would probably have seen what I had seen at the auction.

A thin paint horse.

Nothing more.

I turned toward Silas.

"Do you really think somebody paid to have him trained?"

He gave a slow nod.

"That's what his responses suggest."

"But you can't say what kind of training?"

"Not from one turn."

He glanced at the hoof.

"And not while he's still recovering."

I appreciated his caution.

It was easier to believe him because he wasn't trying to make the story bigger than the evidence.

He hadn't told me Patch was famous.

He hadn't told me he was valuable.

He hadn't promised a future that might never happen.

He had simply noticed something.

Something that deserved attention.

I thought about the afternoon Frank Tally had offered seventy-five dollars.

At the time, I had felt foolish for refusing.

Not entirely foolish.

But frightened that I'd placed my heart ahead of my responsibilities.

I had watched him drive away and then sat down with my checkbook.

I remembered that feeling very clearly.

Now I wondered what Frank would think if he saw Patch walk without the old limp.

Probably that I'd had some luck.

And perhaps I had.

But Maggie had noticed the shoe.

Silas had found the infection.

The horse had endured months of pain.

Those things weren't luck.

They were facts.

I looked at Maggie.

She had moved closer to Patch's neck.

Her fingers rested against the white hair there.

"Grandma?"

"Yes?"

"Do you think he feels better?"

I looked at Silas.

He answered before I could.

"I expect he's a good deal more comfortable than he was."

Maggie nodded.

She seemed satisfied with that.

I envied her a little.

She didn't need to know whether Patch had once been trained for something important.

She didn't need somebody to tell her how much he might be worth.

She wanted him to stop hurting.

And now he was beginning to move without pain.

That was enough for her.

I wished it had been enough for me.

But once Silas had made his observation, I couldn't stop thinking about it.

Who had owned Patch before the auction?

Who had put him through his training?

How had a horse with such good responses ended up thin, neglected, and suffering from a badly fitted shoe?

There might have been simple answers.

I knew that.

An animal's circumstances can change without any great mystery.

But I didn't know those answers.

And not knowing made me uncomfortable.

I found myself studying the crooked white marking on Patch's hip again.

Silas had looked at it during his examination.

Until then, I'd hardly given it a second thought.

Every paint horse has markings that help make it recognizable.

Patch had black and white patches scattered across his body.

The crooked shape near his hip was simply one of them.

I didn't know whether Silas recognized anything about it.

He hadn't said.

I wasn't going to pretend the marking told me something when it didn't.

Still, I began noticing it each time I looked toward the pasture.

The afternoon grew quieter.

Silas finished checking what he needed to check.

He gave us his instructions again.

Then he put his tools away.

I watched him close the leather bag.

It had been a remarkable few days.

Not because Patch had suddenly become some entirely different animal.

He was the same horse.

The same thin body.

The same unusual coat.

The same gentle way of standing beside Maggie.

What had changed was our understanding.

We had thought his limp meant his body was failing.

Silas had found an injury.

We had thought his uneven steps were simply how he moved.

Now we had seen him turn with unexpected control.

And I had begun to wonder how many other judgments I'd made without enough evidence.

Silas lifted his bag.

"Keep looking after that foot."

"We will."

"And don't rush him."

I nodded.

"I won't."

He glanced toward Maggie.

"She's doing good work."

I looked at my granddaughter.

"She is."

Maggie pretended to be interested in Patch's mane.

But I saw the small movement at the corner of her mouth.

It wasn't a full smile.

Not quite.

Still, it was enough.

After Silas left, I stayed outside.

Maggie walked Patch slowly toward the barn.

I watched his feet.

I couldn't help myself.

For weeks, I'd seen him struggle.

I had become so accustomed to that painful rhythm that watching him take almost even steps felt strange.

His hooves touched the ground.

His body followed.

He moved forward.

Nothing dramatic.

Just walking.

But I remembered the infection that had drained from his foot.

The smell.

The old nail track.

The tenderness that made him jerk away when Silas found the sore spot.

I shuddered at the memory.

Maggie stopped near the barn and turned toward me.

"Are you coming?"

"In a minute."

She nodded and took Patch inside.

I remained by the fence.

I thought about my son.

I thought about the first time Maggie had repeated his words about a badly fitted shoe.

The memory hurt, but it did not hurt in quite the same way it once had.

For months, thinking about him had meant thinking only about what we'd lost.

Now I could see something he had left behind.

Knowledge.

Patience.

Care.

Those were living things in Maggie.

They showed themselves when she picked up the grooming brush.

They showed themselves when she noticed a problem I had missed.

And they showed themselves when she guided Patch around a turn without forcing him.

I looked toward the barn.

The door was still open.

I could hear Maggie moving around inside.

I knew she would check his water before coming back to the house.

She always did.

I went inside and opened my black notebook.

The expenses were still there.

I ran my finger along the entries.

Thirty-one dollars.

Four dollars and ninety-five cents.

Three dollars and seventy cents.

More expenses afterward.

I couldn't pretend those numbers didn't matter.

But something else mattered too.

I had been measuring this horse by what he cost.

Then by how badly he limped.

Then by how much work he required.

I had never stopped to ask whether those measurements told me anything useful about who he really was.

I closed the notebook.

Outside, Maggie called softly to Patch.

I heard the low sound of the horse responding.

And I understood that whatever Silas had recognized, I didn't need to settle it that afternoon.

Patch needed to recover.

Maggie needed the ordinary comfort of caring for him.

And I needed to be patient enough to let both of them have that.

For once, I didn't try to calculate what would happen next.

I went to the kitchen window and watched my granddaughter finish her chores.

Source: <a href="https://news1.shoptonytv.net/tunght/they-laughed-when-a-widow-paid-31-for-a-lame-tw" rel="noopener nofollow"
