4 – An Old Horseshoer Removed One Crooked Shoe and Discovered Why the Horse Everyone Had Given Up On Was Still Fighting to Walk

Silas Boone arrived in a rusted Chevrolet.

I heard the engine before I saw the truck come around the driveway.

He pulled up near the barn and climbed out slowly.

He was seventy-three.

There was nothing hurried about the way he moved.

He reached into the truck and took out a worn leather tool bag.

I recognized the kind of bag immediately.

Not because I knew everything inside it.

I didn't.

But because it looked like something that had been carried to work for a long time.

Silas had spent more than forty years shoeing horses across central Kentucky.

A lifetime of lifting hooves, studying legs, and trying to keep animals comfortable enough to do their work.

He had known my husband.

And although I hadn't seen him in some time, I was grateful when he looked at me with the easy familiarity of somebody who remembered our family.

"Morning, Ruth."

"Good morning, Silas."

He set down his bag.

"Let's have a look at this horse."

Maggie was already near Patch.

She had been ready before Silas arrived.

I could tell by the way she stood beside the horse, one hand near his neck, watching the man with the leather bag.

Silas looked at her.

"Take him across the yard for me."

She nodded.

Then she began walking.

Patch followed.

I watched Silas's eyes.

They were fixed on the horse's front legs.

Not on his color.

Not on the ribs that were still more visible than I wanted.

His attention stayed on the way Patch moved.

Maggie led him past us.

Silas waited.

Then he asked her to turn around.

"Come back the same way."

She did.

Patch limped toward us.

His right front foot landed awkwardly.

He shifted away from it as soon as he could.

I had watched that movement so many times that I could almost predict it.

Silas didn't say anything at first.

He let Maggie stop the horse.

Then he crouched beside the troublesome hoof.

He studied the horseshoe.

He ran his hand near the edge.

Then he looked up at me.

"Who fitted this thing?"

"I have no idea."

He examined it again.

"Whoever did it had no business leaving it like this."

I felt my face grow warm.

I didn't know whether he meant the person who had shod Patch or everyone who had failed to notice afterward.

Either way, I was part of that second group.

Maggie had seen the problem before I had.

I had brought Patch home and watched him struggle without understanding why.

Silas began working.

He removed the shoe slowly.

I had expected it to come off and leave an ordinary hoof beneath it.

It didn't.

The hoof was misshapen.

The areas where the iron had pressed against it looked painfully wrong.

Even without knowing much about horses, I could see that something had been putting pressure where it shouldn't.

Silas studied the hoof carefully.

Then he showed us the position of one of the old nails.

It had been driven much too close to the sensitive part of the foot.

Maggie leaned forward.

"Was that hurting him?"

Silas looked at the nail track.

"I'd be surprised if it wasn't."

I stared at Patch.

He stood patiently, but I noticed how closely he watched Silas's hands.

The old man reached into his bag and took out the tools he needed to check the hoof more carefully.

He tested different places.

Patch remained still at first.

Then Silas pressed a particular area.

The horse pulled away sharply.

Maggie caught her breath.

I did too.

Silas didn't seem surprised.

He adjusted his position and examined the spot.

"That's where he's sore."

I looked from the hoof to his face.

"Can you do anything about it?"

"Let me see what we're dealing with."

He worked carefully around the old nail track.

I watched every movement.

I had imagined a badly fitted shoe.

I had imagined pressure from the metal against the hoof.

But I hadn't understood what might have been happening underneath.

Silas cleaned the area and investigated further.

Then we noticed the smell.

It came suddenly enough that Maggie lifted a hand toward her mouth.

A foul odor.

Nothing like the ordinary smell of a stable.

Silas had opened a place where infected fluid had been trapped.

It began to drain.

I stared.

Maggie stepped back a little.

Neither of us said anything.

There it was.

An infection.

Hidden beneath that badly fitted shoe.

All those days of careful walking.

All those moments when Patch shifted his weight away from the right front foot.

All the times I had wondered whether he was simply too old or too worn out to move comfortably.

And underneath it all, an injury that hadn't been properly dealt with.

I felt sick.

I looked at Silas.

"How long do you think he's been suffering with that?"

He kept his attention on the hoof.

"Could be several months."

Several months.

I repeated the words silently.

I tried to imagine walking on an infected foot every day for months.

Being forced to put weight on a painful place.

Trying to stand.

Trying to move.

Trying to eat enough to keep going.

And being treated as though the limp was simply part of who I was.

I swallowed.

"I thought he might just be worn out."

Silas shook his head.

"There's a difference between a horse that's finished and a horse that's been made miserable by pain."

I looked down.

I knew exactly what he meant.

I had been afraid Patch was an old horse beyond helping.

Now I was looking at proof that at least some of his suffering had a specific cause.

A cause somebody should have noticed.

Maggie stood close to his shoulder.

She rubbed his neck gently.

I could see that she was upset.

But she didn't turn away.

She stayed with him while Silas worked.

That was something her father had taught her, I thought.

Not to panic just because an animal was hurting.

To stay calm.

To pay attention.

To do what was needed.

Silas cleaned the hoof.

He treated the affected area.

Then he applied a protective dressing.

He showed us what to watch for and explained how to keep the area clean.

Maggie listened closely.

I tried to remember every instruction.

I knew this wasn't the sort of problem where we could ignore the foot for another week and hope everything went away.

We would have to take care of it properly.

Silas made sure we understood.

And when he finally stepped back, I felt something I hadn't allowed myself to feel since buying Patch.

Relief.

Not because the horse was suddenly healed.

He wasn't.

Not because every problem had disappeared.

It hadn't.

But we knew what we were dealing with.

There was a real injury.

There was an infection.

And there was something we could do.

Silas put aside the tools he'd been using.

I thought he was finished with his examination.

Instead, he began looking at Patch in a different way.

He studied the horse's legs.

Then his shoulders.

Then he moved behind him and looked at the heavy muscles of his hindquarters.

I watched him circle slowly.

He didn't say much.

Every so often, he stopped and looked at some part of Patch's build.

The way he stood.

The shape of his body.

The strength that was still there beneath the poor condition.

I wondered whether he was checking for another injury.

"Is there something else wrong?"

Silas didn't answer right away.

He tilted his head.

Then he looked at Patch again.

"He's an interesting horse."

I didn't understand.

"Interesting how?"

Silas stood beside his shoulder.

He ran a hand along the horse's neck.

Then he asked Maggie to lead him forward again.

She obeyed.

Patch followed her, still favoring his sore foot.

After a few steps, Maggie stopped.

Patch stopped with her.

Not awkwardly.

Not with the confused shuffling I might have expected from an animal struggling to walk.

He brought himself into position and waited.

Silas watched closely.

"Take him a little farther."

Maggie led him ahead.

Silas studied the movement again.

Then he looked at me.

"Where did you get this fellow?"

"At the livestock auction."

"I know that part. Do you know where he was before?"

"No."

He considered my answer.

Then he looked over Patch's body again.

I could see he was thinking.

It made me uneasy.

I had called him because I needed help with a sore hoof.

Now he was studying the horse as though he had found something he hadn't expected.

I glanced at Maggie.

She was watching Silas too.

He walked toward Patch's hindquarters.

There was a crooked white marking on the horse's hip.

I had seen it countless times.

It was simply part of his unusual coat.

At least, that was what I'd always thought.

Silas looked at it.

Then he moved around the horse again.

He seemed almost reluctant to say what was on his mind.

Finally, he spoke.

"I don't think this fellow was always just standing in somebody's pasture."

I frowned.

"What makes you say that?"

He gestured toward Patch.

"Look at how he responds to her."

Maggie stood quietly beside the horse.

Silas continued.

"The way he holds himself. The way he waits for direction."

I looked at Patch.

I could see he was standing still.

I could see he was listening to Maggie.

But I couldn't see anything extraordinary.

"He's always been gentle with her."

Silas nodded.

"That isn't all I'm talking about."

He paused.

Then he said something I hadn't expected to hear.

"I'd wager somebody put serious time and money into teaching this horse."

I stared.

"Teaching him what?"

Silas didn't answer immediately.

He stroked Patch's neck.

"That's what I'd like to figure out."

Maggie looked up at him.

"Do you mean somebody trained him?"

"I believe so."

"For riding?"

Silas hesitated.

"I'd rather see more before I tell you exactly what I think."

I didn't know what to say.

Patch had cost thirty-one dollars.

He had been thin.

He had been lame.

And before Maggie noticed the shoe, I had assumed he was simply an old animal who needed a place to rest.

Now an experienced horseshoer was telling me that somebody might once have spent a great deal of money on him.

I couldn't make those two pictures fit together.

An unwanted horse at a livestock auction.

A horse with a badly shod, infected foot.

And a horse who might have received considerable training.

It didn't make sense to me.

But Silas had spent a lifetime understanding things I had never learned.

I wasn't going to dismiss him.

I looked at Maggie.

Her eyes were fixed on Patch.

I could almost see her remembering everything her father had taught her.

The way to stand beside a horse.

The way to guide him.

The importance of paying attention to how he answered a simple instruction.

She had been doing those things without thinking of them as anything special.

Now Silas was suggesting that Patch's responses meant something more.

I wanted to ask another question.

Several questions.

Where had Patch come from?

Who had trained him?

Why had he ended up at an auction with a twisted shoe and a painful infection?

But Silas didn't pretend to know.

So I kept my questions to myself.

We followed his instructions for caring for the hoof.

Each day, Maggie helped keep the affected area clean.

I made sure Patch had the food he could manage.

We continued with the quiet work of looking after him.

There was nothing dramatic about it.

It meant checking the dressing.

Watching the foot.

Making sure he was comfortable.

And paying attention to his steps.

I noticed every small change.

At first, I was afraid to trust what I saw.

I had spent so much time watching him limp that I didn't want to convince myself he was better simply because I wished it.

But after several days, his movements became easier.

He still needed care.

I knew that.

Yet something was changing.

The terrible discomfort that had made every step look difficult was beginning to ease.

Nine days after Silas first treated the hoof, Patch walked across our gravel driveway with almost no sign of the pain that had troubled him before.

I stood and watched.

I could hear his hooves against the gravel.

One step.

Another.

Then another.

The uneven movement was nearly gone.

I felt my throat tighten.

Maggie looked at me.

"Grandma, look."

"I'm looking."

And I was.

I could hardly take my eyes off him.

That morning, Silas was watching too.

He asked Maggie to lead Patch around.

She did.

The horse followed her along the driveway.

Then she guided him into a tight turn.

It happened quickly.

So quickly that I didn't understand what I'd seen until I noticed Silas's face.

Patch gathered himself.

He brought his hind legs beneath him.

He lowered his body slightly and turned with an ease and balance I had never seen from him before.

It was not the clumsy movement of a horse simply trying to get around a corner.

There was control in it.

Precision.

Even to my untrained eyes, it looked different.

Silas stopped moving.

Maggie brought Patch to a halt.

The horse waited beside her.

I looked at Silas.

He was staring at Patch.

Then he slowly took off his hat.

For several seconds, he didn't speak.

I had never seen him look quite like that.

"Silas?"

He kept his eyes on the horse.

Then he let out a quiet breath.

"Well, would you look at that."

Maggie turned toward him.

"What did he do?"

Silas looked at her.

Then at me.

He seemed to be reconsidering everything he'd thought about Patch.

I remembered his words from nine days earlier.

Somebody had spent serious time and money training this horse.

At the time, I hadn't known what to make of them.

Now I had watched Patch turn on the gravel with the balance of an animal that knew exactly how to use its body.

I still didn't understand what that meant.

But Silas did.

At least, he understood enough to be astonished.

I looked at Patch.

His black-and-white coat was cleaner.

He was eating.

He was no longer struggling with every step.

Maggie stood beside him, holding his lead.

And the old horseshoer who had spent more than forty years working with Kentucky horses was standing in our driveway with his hat in his hands.

For the first time, I wondered whether the horse everybody had judged by his limp had been hiding abilities none of us had recognized.

I thought about Frank Tally.

His seventy-five dollars.

His certainty that I should take the money and be done with the horse.

I thought about my black notebook.

Thirty-one dollars.

A few dollars for hay.

A few more for feed.

Every number had seemed so important.

And they were important.

I hadn't suddenly become a woman with money to spare.

The bills still mattered.

But standing in that driveway, I understood that none of my calculations could tell me what kind of horse Patch really was.

His limp had hidden his movement.

His hunger had hidden his strength.

And his battered appearance had made him easy to dismiss.

I looked at Maggie.

She scratched his neck, unaware of how extraordinary Silas seemed to find what he'd just witnessed.

To her, Patch was still Patch.

The horse who waited for the school bus.

The horse who stole her cap.

The horse who had needed somebody to notice his sore foot.

I was glad of that.

Whatever Silas had recognized, it hadn't changed the reason Maggie cared for him.

She had seen his pain.

She had wanted to help.

And she had brought me the first real clue that his trouble might not be permanent.

I turned back toward Silas.

He was still studying the horse.

I didn't ask him to promise anything.

I didn't ask whether Patch might become valuable.

I had learned enough by then to distrust promises built on hope alone.

I only watched as Maggie led the horse forward again.

This time, he moved more freely.

And for the first time since the auction, I wasn't looking at a lame horse and wondering how much trouble I'd bought.

I was looking at an animal whose true abilities I did not yet understand.

That alone was a remarkable change.

Source: <a href="https://news1.shoptonytv.net/tunght/they-laughed-when-a-widow-paid-31-for-a-lame-tw"
