11 – When The Woman Who Wore My Missing Coat Asked To Meet Me, I Agreed For One Reason And Finally Asked About Walter’s Wedding Ring

I didn't expect Diane to ask for a meeting.

Of all the people involved, she was the last one I wanted to see.

Brian had spoken to me on the telephone.

Emily had sat at my kitchen table.

But Diane remained mostly a face on a recording.

A woman in my green coat.

Standing at a bank counter.

Speaking as though she were me.

I had also seen her in the photograph from my bedroom.

Smiling beside my open jewelry box.

Those images stayed with me.

Sometimes I pictured her standing in my closet, deciding which of my belongings would help her pretend to be me.

I didn't know whether that was exactly what happened.

I tried not to invent details.

But the evidence was enough.

She had used my identity.

She had helped take my money.

And she had entered my private space without my permission.

Then her attorney contacted Detective Harris.

Diane wanted to speak with me.

The proposed meeting would take place in a supervised setting.

Detective Harris explained the request.

I didn't hesitate.

"No."

She accepted my answer.

I thought that would be the end of it.

For the rest of that day, I tried to keep busy.

I watered the flowerpots.

I cleaned the kitchen.

I folded laundry.

But I kept thinking about Diane.

I wondered what she could possibly want to say.

Perhaps she wanted to apologize.

Perhaps she wanted to explain that Brian had pressured her.

Perhaps she wanted me to tell the authorities she hadn't meant any harm.

I didn't want any of those conversations.

I had already heard enough excuses.

Brian said he intended to repay the money.

Emily said she was frightened of losing him.

Diane had told investigators she believed the withdrawals were authorized.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an explanation.

But none of those explanations changed what happened.

I had been the person whose money was taken.

And nobody had asked what I wanted.

That evening, I opened Walter's jewelry box again.

The ring was still missing.

I knew it would be.

I sat on the bed and held the empty velvet compartment.

I remembered Walter wearing the ring when he worked around the house.

Sometimes he rubbed the little scratch with his thumb.

He never seemed bothered by it.

He said the ring had been with him through enough years to earn a few marks.

I smiled at the memory.

Then I felt tears in my eyes.

I thought about Diane standing in my bedroom with the jewelry box open behind her.

I wanted to know whether she had seen the ring.

I wanted to know who had taken it.

And I wanted to know where it was.

The next day, I contacted Detective Harris.

I told her I had reconsidered the meeting.

She asked whether I was certain.

I said yes.

Not because I wanted to hear Diane's excuses.

I wanted to ask about Walter's ring.

That was all.

The meeting took place in a small conference room.

I arrived feeling more nervous than I expected.

The room was plain.

There was a table.

Several chairs.

Nothing about it felt welcoming.

I preferred it that way.

I didn't want the meeting to resemble a family gathering.

Diane entered wearing a beige cardigan.

I noticed that immediately.

No green coat.

Without it, she looked different.

Older.

Less certain of herself.

She sat across from me.

Her attorney remained present.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

I studied her face.

I had seen that face at birthday parties.

At family meals.

Beside Emily and Brian.

I remembered sitting near her while Noah opened presents.

We had made polite conversation.

We had spoken about ordinary things.

Now I was sitting across from her because she had impersonated me at my bank.

Diane looked down at her hands.

Then she spoke.

"Margaret, I know you're upset."

I stared at her.

Upset.

Such a small word.

I wondered whether she had chosen it carefully.

Whether she thought calling me upset would make everything sound like a disagreement between relatives.

I folded my hands.

"Do you understand why?"

She nodded.

"I made a terrible mistake."

I looked at her.

"A mistake?"

She lowered her eyes.

I leaned forward slightly.

"Did you forget where your own bank was?"

She looked confused.

"Did you accidentally put on my coat?"

She said nothing.

"Did you accidentally present my identification?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

I continued.

"Because those things didn't happen by accident."

Diane pressed a tissue against her face.

"I know."

I looked at her carefully.

"Then don't call it a mistake as though you simply misunderstood something."

She nodded.

I didn't raise my voice.

I didn't need to.

I wanted her to hear how ordinary the facts sounded when spoken plainly.

She wore my clothing.

She used my identity.

She took money from my account.

Those were decisions.

Not accidents.

Diane began crying.

"I never expected it to become this serious."

I looked at her.

I couldn't believe that answer.

I wondered what she had expected.

She had helped withdraw sixty-one thousand dollars from somebody else's savings.

How could that not be serious?

"At what point did you expect it to stop?" I asked.

She looked up.

"Margaret—"

"After the first withdrawal?"

She wiped her face.

"Or after the next one?"

She said nothing.

"Or after all sixty-one thousand dollars were gone?"

Her eyes filled again.

I sat back.

I had watched the security footage.

I had seen her approach the counter.

I had seen her present herself as me.

There had been nothing accidental about it.

Diane looked toward her attorney.

Then she looked back at me.

"Brian said everything would be taken care of."

I nodded slowly.

"That's what he told Emily."

She pressed her lips together.

"He told me the money would be returned."

I looked at her.

"Did you know I hadn't given permission?"

She didn't answer immediately.

I waited.

Finally, she lowered her eyes.

I didn't need to force another answer.

The evidence had already shown what she knew.

She had practiced my signature.

She had learned details about my account.

She had studied my banking habits.

And she had worn my coat because she knew she needed to resemble me.

I thought about the seventeen thousand dollars traced to an account connected to her.

I wondered whether she had thought about my bills before accepting it.

Whether she had considered what would happen if I needed money for a medical emergency.

Whether she had imagined me discovering that a large part of my savings had disappeared.

Probably not.

I looked at her.

"You knew I lived alone."

She nodded.

"You knew Walter had died."

"Yes."

"You knew I depended on those savings."

She began crying harder.

I let her cry.

I had stopped believing tears were proof of innocence.

Then I asked the question I had come to ask.

"Where is Walter's wedding ring?"

Diane stopped moving.

Her expression changed.

I noticed immediately.

For the first time during the meeting, she seemed genuinely startled.

She looked toward her attorney.

Then back at me.

"Brian took it."

I sat very still.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

I had suspected Brian.

Detective Harris had recorded my suspicion.

But hearing Diane say he took the ring made something inside me tighten.

"Are you certain?"

She nodded.

I looked at her.

"Did you know he had it?"

She hesitated.

Then she admitted she did.

I felt my hands grow cold.

"Where is it now?"

She shook her head.

"I don't know."

I stared at her.

"Think carefully."

She looked down.

"I really don't know where he put it."

I wanted to shout.

Not because I believed shouting would help.

Because I had finally been given a name, but not the one answer I needed most.

Brian had taken Walter's ring.

And Diane had known.

I could barely breathe for a moment.

I remembered Walter's hands.

I remembered the little scratch inside the band.

I remembered placing the ring in its velvet compartment after he died.

I looked at Diane.

"That ring was with my husband for forty-three years."

Her eyes filled.

"It was one of the few things he wore every day."

She nodded.

I felt tears running down my face.

I didn't bother wiping them away.

"When he died, I kept it because it reminded me of him."

Diane looked at the table.

"I didn't understand it meant that much."

I stared at her.

I couldn't believe those words.

"You didn't need to understand what it meant."

She looked up.

"You only needed to understand it wasn't yours."

She began crying again.

I thought about the green coat.

The bank account.

The identification.

The ring.

Everything seemed to come back to the same terrible idea.

My belongings only mattered if they were useful to somebody else.

My money could solve Brian's debts.

My coat could help Diane look like me.

My house could secure a loan.

My husband's ring could be taken because somebody wanted it.

They had treated the things in my life as though they belonged to whoever found a use for them.

I couldn't make Diane understand the full weight of that.

I wasn't certain I wanted to try anymore.

I stood.

Diane looked frightened.

"Margaret, please."

I picked up my handbag.

"I've heard enough."

She began speaking again.

She said she regretted what happened.

She said she wished she could change it.

I didn't answer.

I had heard the same kind of words from Brian and Emily.

I wanted actions now.

Not promises.

I walked toward the door.

Then Diane called my name.

I turned.

She looked at me with tears on her face.

"Could you ever forgive me?"

I stood quietly for a moment.

I had thought about forgiveness since the day I discovered the withdrawals.

People often spoke about it as though it were something the injured person owed everyone else.

As though refusing to forgive immediately meant you were bitter.

As though the people who had caused the harm could decide when the pain should end.

I didn't believe that anymore.

I looked at Diane.

"Maybe someday I'll decide what forgiveness means for me."

She watched me.

"But you don't get to ask me to make that decision today."

Her face crumpled.

I continued.

"Not after what you've done."

Then I left.

I didn't feel triumphant.

I didn't feel relieved.

But I had finally asked the question that had been sitting in my heart.

I knew Brian had taken Walter's ring.

I still didn't know where it was.

That hurt.

But it was a fact I could give to Detective Harris.

And for the first time, the missing ring no longer felt like a mystery without a name attached to it.
