I said.

She waited.

"I love you."

She began crying.

"But I don't trust you the way I used to."

She looked down.

I let the words settle.

I had spent years believing that mothers were supposed to forgive their children quickly.

Sometimes I had apologized first even when I didn't think I was wrong.

I didn't like conflict.

I didn't like seeing Emily upset.

When she was younger, I sometimes tried to solve problems before she had a chance to work through them herself.

I had thought I was helping.

Looking back, I wondered whether I had made it too easy for her to expect me to take care of everything.

But she was thirty-eight now.

She had to take responsibility for her own decisions.

I couldn't do that part for her.

"Emily, if you want us to have a relationship again, you need to begin with honesty."

She nodded.

"Not just when you're frightened."

"I understand."

"Not just when Brian is angry."

She wiped her cheeks.

"I understand."

"And not only when somebody has discovered what happened."

She looked directly at me.

"I know."

I studied her expression.

I wanted to believe her.

But wanting wasn't enough anymore.

I asked whether she had continued cooperating with Detective Harris.

"Yes."

"Have you given her the messages?"

"Everything I have."

"The loan papers?"

"Yes."

"And you've answered her questions?"

She nodded.

"I have."

I felt a small amount of relief.

At least she wasn't still helping Brian hide the evidence.

I didn't know what the investigation would mean for her.

I knew she had admitted being aware of the scheme.

I knew the authorities would have to examine everyone's role.

I wasn't going to ask anyone to excuse her simply because she was my daughter.

That was another painful realization.

For years, I had believed protecting Emily was one of my most important responsibilities.

But there was a difference between protecting somebody from harm and protecting them from the results of their own choices.

I was beginning to understand that difference.

She looked around the kitchen.

Her eyes settled on Walter's photograph.

"I miss Dad," she said.

I swallowed.

"So do I."

She stared at the photograph for a long time.

"He would be so disappointed in me."

I didn't answer.

I couldn't speak for Walter.

I knew he would have been hurt.

But he wasn't there to tell her what he thought.

And I wasn't going to use his memory to make her feel worse.

She wiped her eyes.

"I keep thinking about him."

I nodded.

"So do I."

She looked toward the hallway.

"Does the ring still haven't been found?"

I shook my head.

"No."

Her expression changed.

"I'm sorry."

I looked at her.

"That ring mattered more to me than its price."

She nodded.

"I know."

"I don't think you really understood that before."

She covered her mouth.

I didn't continue.

There wasn't anything useful left to say about the ring.

Not until somebody found it.

After a while, Emily asked whether I had been sleeping.

I told her not very well.

She looked upset.

I could see that she wanted to comfort me.

Perhaps she wanted to make tea.

Perhaps she wanted to tidy the kitchen.

Those were things she had done during ordinary visits.

But this wasn't an ordinary visit.

I didn't want us to pretend.

I needed the discomfort to remain visible.

Not forever.

But long enough for both of us to understand that something serious had changed.

She looked at me again.

"Mom, can I still come and see you?"

I took a breath.

That was a harder question than it should have been.

A few months earlier, I would have laughed.

Of course my daughter could visit.

She had grown up in that house.

She had a key.

She had walked through the front door hundreds of times without knocking.

But now I knew that access to my home had been part of the problem.

Brian had used it.

Emily had helped him obtain information.

And Diane had entered my private bedroom.

I needed to protect myself.

"Maybe one day," I said.

Emily looked hurt.

I continued before she could speak.

"But it can't be the way it was before."

She nodded slowly.

"You can't simply come and go as though nothing happened."

"I understand."

"And you need to ask before visiting."

She looked down.

"All right."

I thought about how strange that sounded.

Telling my own daughter she needed permission to come into the house where she grew up.

But she was no longer a child living under my roof.

She was an adult who had helped conceal a serious betrayal.

Being family didn't mean she had an automatic right to my home.

I had spent years making sure everyone felt welcome.

Now I needed to make sure I felt safe.

Emily nodded again.

"I'll respect that."

I hoped she meant it.

I looked at her for a long moment.

Then I asked whether she had anything else she needed to tell me.

She shook her head.

"No, Mom."

I studied her face.

I couldn't know whether that was the complete truth.

I had to live with that uncertainty.

For the first time, I didn't try to fill the silence with reassurance.

I didn't tell her everything would be fine.

I didn't promise we would forget what happened.

I didn't say Brian's business trouble had made everyone act foolishly.

I simply sat there.

Eventually, Emily stood.

She picked up her handbag.

I walked with her to the front door.

She paused on the porch.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"I really am sorry."

I nodded.

"I hope you'll keep showing me that."

She wiped her eyes.

"I will."

I watched her walk to her car.

She looked smaller than she had when she arrived.

I knew she was hurting.

And I knew she had made a difficult decision by leaving Brian.

But for once, I didn't feel responsible for making everything easier.

I didn't offer her money.

I didn't offer to speak to Brian.

I didn't promise to solve her problems.

I let her leave.

Then I closed the door.

I stood in the hallway for a while.

I looked at the cabinet.

The one that had been left slightly open after my documents disappeared.

I had already moved the remaining important papers somewhere safer.

But the memory remained.

I walked into the living room.

Walter's rocking chair was visible through the window.

I remembered him sitting there with his hands folded.

He had always been good at waiting.

He didn't rush decisions when he was upset.

Sometimes that irritated me.

I wanted answers immediately.

He preferred to think.

Now I understood why.

I needed time.

Time to see whether Emily would keep telling the truth.

Time to see what happened with the investigation.

Time to learn whether I could trust her again.

I still loved my daughter.

But I no longer believed love required me to hand her everything she asked for.

For the first time since becoming a mother, I allowed myself to imagine a relationship with Emily that included boundaries.

Not punishment.

Not revenge.

Just boundaries.

I sat down and opened my book.

I read the same page twice.

Then I turned it.

The afternoon passed quietly.

I didn't call Emily to make sure she had reached wherever she was staying.

I didn't call Brian.

I didn't ask anyone to tell me whether they were arguing.

I made myself tea.

I watered the plants near the window.

I checked the notes beside my telephone.

And I let the investigation continue without trying to rescue the people who had caused it.

It wasn't forgiveness.

It wasn't peace.

But it was the beginning of learning how to live without carrying everyone else's mistakes.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: When The Woman Who Wore My Missing Coat Asked To Meet Me, I Agreed For One Reason And Finally Asked About Walter’s Wedding Ring

Emily looked exhausted when she told me she'd left Brian.
