We need to talk reasonably."

I could feel myself becoming angry.

But I kept my voice quiet.

"What exactly needs sorting out?"

"The bank situation."

I waited.

He explained that Diane had been helping with a financial arrangement connected to his business.

He said the money was only meant to be used temporarily.

He insisted there had been confusion about the arrangement.

I looked at Detective Harris.

She remained silent.

"Brian, whose money was it?"

There was a pause.

"You know whose account it came from."

"Mine."

"Yes, Margaret."

"Did I agree to lend it to you?"

He sighed again.

"You're making this sound very unpleasant."

I looked down at my hands.

Unpleasant.

That was the word he chose.

Not illegal.

Not dishonest.

Not frightening.

Unpleasant.

I thought about standing in my bedroom and discovering Walter's missing ring.

I thought about my account being restricted because someone had stolen my identity.

I thought about the loan application that could have placed my house at risk.

And Brian wanted to discuss how unpleasant everything sounded.

I asked him whether he had taken my identification.

He didn't answer directly.

He said Emily was upset and might not be remembering everything correctly.

I repeated the question.

"Did you take my identification from my house?"

He went quiet.

Then he admitted he had.

I looked at Detective Harris.

She wrote something down.

"Why?"

"Because we needed the paperwork."

"We?"

He hesitated.

"Diane was helping."

I swallowed.

"Did you give her my green coat?"

Another pause.

Then he said the coat had helped her look more convincing because people sometimes confused us.

I stared at the telephone.

He spoke as though he were explaining an ordinary practical decision.

As though borrowing somebody's clothing to impersonate them at a bank was no different from choosing a suitable jacket for the weather.

I thought of Diane on the security recording.

The familiar collar.

The large buttons.

The way the fabric hung around her shoulders.

I had felt foolish when I couldn't find that coat in my closet.

Now I realized Brian had counted on me dismissing its disappearance.

He knew I might blame my memory.

He knew I didn't always want to admit that getting older had made some things harder.

And he had used that against me.

"Did Diane know she was pretending to be me?"

Brian made an impatient sound.

"Margaret, of course she knew what the arrangement was."

I closed my eyes for a second.

"Then she knew the bank believed she was the account holder?"

"Yes."

"And you knew I hadn't given permission?"

He didn't answer.

I looked at the detective again.

Then I asked the question that mattered most.

"Did you take sixty-one thousand dollars from my account?"

He answered quickly.

"We borrowed it."

I let the words sit between us.

Borrowed.

He had used that word before.

Emily had used it too.

I wondered whether repeating it made them feel better about what they had done.

"Brian, did I ever tell you that you could have that money?"

He said nothing.

"Did I sign anything giving you access?"

Still nothing.

"Did you ask me?"

Finally, he spoke.

"You wouldn't have understood the business situation."

I felt my face grow hot.

"Then explain it to me now."

He sighed.

He said suppliers needed payment.

He said the company was under pressure.

He said he had been trying to keep everything together for his family.

I listened.

I could understand fear.

I could understand debt.

I could even understand making a foolish decision when everything seemed to be going wrong.

But this wasn't one foolish decision.

They had taken identification.

They had studied my account.

They had used my coat.

They had made three withdrawals.

They had prepared a much larger loan using my house.

Each step required another choice.

And every choice was made without asking me.

I looked at the papers.

"Did you prepare a loan application using my house?"

Brian became quiet.

I waited.

"Brian?"

He said the paperwork hadn't been completed.

I felt my chest tighten.

"Did I sign that application?"

He hesitated.

"Not personally."

I stared at the telephone.

"Not personally?"

He began talking about arrangements that would have been handled later.

He said I wouldn't have lost anything.

He said the business would recover.

He said he had planned to repay whatever was used.

I couldn't bear it.

He was still speaking about my house as though it were something he had the authority to include in his plans.

"Brian, that house is mine."

"I know."

"Walter and I paid for it."

"I know."

"Then why were you trying to use it?"

He made another frustrated sound.

He said he had been desperate.

He said Emily and Noah depended on him.

He said the money in my account was sitting unused while his family was struggling.

I looked toward Walter's photograph.

My husband had spent years putting that money away.

He had worked until his body was tired.

He had repaired things rather than buying new ones.

He had kept records.

He had made sacrifices so I wouldn't have to worry about every unexpected expense in old age.

And Brian called those savings unused.

I felt tears in my eyes.

But I didn't let them interrupt me.

"That money isn't idle, Brian."

He said nothing.

"It's what allows me to live here without asking Emily to pay my bills."

I looked at the detective.

"It's what Walter left to help me remain independent."

Brian tried to interrupt.

I continued.

"I don't have a business that can earn it back. I don't have forty more years to replace it."

He became quiet.

I had never spoken to him so firmly.

For years, I had tried to avoid arguments with Emily's husband.

I didn't want to interfere in their marriage.

I didn't want to make family dinners uncomfortable.

I had believed that keeping peace was part of being a good mother-in-law.

Now I understood the cost of always being agreeable.

Brian had mistaken my politeness for permission.

I asked him one final question.

"Did you truly expect to repay everything?"

He answered immediately.

"Yes."

Then he added that I needed to remember he and Emily had a family to support.

He said my savings weren't helping anybody while they remained in the bank.

I looked down at the telephone.

That was when I understood how he had justified it to himself.

He believed his need was more important than my right to decide.

My savings represented opportunity to him.

My house represented security for his debts.

My age made him believe I wouldn't fight.

I was no longer interested in persuading him.

"You had no right," I said.

He began speaking again.

I ended the call.

For a few seconds, nobody said anything.

I could hear the kitchen clock.

I could hear Emily breathing quietly beside me.

Detective Harris made notes about the conversation.

She asked me to confirm several things Brian had said.

I did.

He had admitted taking my identification.

He had admitted using my coat to help Diane impersonate me.

He had acknowledged that I hadn't personally signed the loan application.

And he had described the stolen money as something he expected to repay.

I sat back in my chair.

I didn't feel pleased.

I didn't feel as though I had won an argument.

I felt tired.

Very tired.

But I also felt something I hadn't felt since walking into the bank.

I felt able to make a decision without asking what Brian wanted.

He had spent years speaking confidently.

He was good at explaining things.

He could make ordinary problems sound complicated and complicated problems sound simple.

I had often accepted his explanations because he seemed so certain.

That morning, certainty no longer impressed me.

I looked at Detective Harris.

"Please include everything he admitted."

She nodded.

I looked toward Emily.

She had her hands folded in her lap.

She hadn't defended him during the call.

For the first time, that seemed like a small change.

Not enough to repair anything.

But a change.

I reached for the white envelope.

I put the papers back inside.

Brian had wanted the matter settled privately.

He had wanted me to tell the bank there was a misunderstanding.

Instead, I had told the truth while the detective listened.

I didn't know how long the investigation would take.

I didn't know whether the money would be returned.

I didn't know what would happen to Brian or Diane.

But I knew one thing.

From that morning onward, Brian would no longer be the person deciding what I was allowed to know about my own life.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Three Days After My Son-in-Law Admitted Taking My Money, The Bank Traced The Withdrawals And Exposed What Had Really Paid For My Daughter’s Beautiful Kitchen

At 10:42 that morning, Brian called.
