6 – The Detective Read My Daughter’s Messages And Found A Photograph Of My Bedroom That Proved My Family Had Been Planning This For Weeks

Detective Harris returned the following morning.

I had already cleared the kitchen table.

The white envelope was waiting beside my telephone.

I had made myself tea, but I hadn't drunk much of it.

I couldn't settle my stomach.

Every time I looked toward the hallway, I thought about the missing identification papers.

Every time I looked toward the bedroom, I thought about Walter's ring.

At a little after nine, Detective Harris knocked.

Emily arrived for the meeting as arranged.

She looked exhausted.

Her face was pale.

She had the same large handbag she had carried the night before.

Detective Harris greeted us both.

She explained that she needed a clear account of what Emily knew and when she had learned it.

My daughter nodded.

I watched her place her phone on the table.

There was something difficult about seeing that ordinary little device.

I had watched Emily use it at family dinners.

She showed me photographs of Noah.

She read messages from friends.

She sometimes helped me find information on my own phone.

Now that same device contained conversations about stealing my savings.

Detective Harris began with the documents.

Emily handed over the copies of my bank records.

Then she provided the loan application.

The detective examined the signature.

She asked whether I had signed it.

"No."

I said it plainly.

She asked whether I had authorized anyone to apply for a loan using my property.

"No."

Then she asked Emily how the document had been obtained.

Emily repeated what she told me.

Brian had arranged the paperwork.

He had been working with Diane.

The plan involved using my financial information without my permission.

Detective Harris wrote down her answers.

She didn't raise her voice.

She didn't accuse Emily in the way I had the night before.

She simply asked questions and waited.

I admired that.

I wished I had been able to remain so calm.

Then Emily began showing her messages.

There were conversations between her and Brian.

Others included Diane.

Some went back weeks.

I hadn't expected to see so much preparation.

One message discussed which bank branch I usually visited.

Another mentioned the times I tended to go there.

Diane had been paying attention to my habits.

I went to the same branch because it was familiar.

I liked seeing the same employees.

I liked knowing where to park.

I had never imagined those habits would help someone imitate me.

Detective Harris read through the messages carefully.

Then she asked Emily whether Diane knew any of the bank employees.

Emily said Diane had tried to learn who worked at the branch.

She had paid particular attention to the younger tellers.

I thought of Brittany.

Her gentle expression.

The way she had looked uncomfortable when she discovered the withdrawals.

I remembered asking her whether Diane had sounded like me.

Now I understood why that question mattered.

Diane hadn't simply put on a coat and hoped for the best.

She had studied what she needed to know.

She had prepared answers.

She had practiced looking and sounding convincing.

Detective Harris showed me one of the messages.

Diane had written that a young teller would probably accept her identification if she answered confidently.

I read the words twice.

Confidence.

That was what Diane had counted on.

She expected other people to believe her because she behaved as though she had nothing to hide.

I had seen that confidence on the recording.

I had mistaken it for a lack of fear.

Now I understood it had been part of the plan.

Another message described how to copy my signature.

I felt my fingers tighten around the edge of the table.

Somebody had been studying the way I wrote my own name.

My name.

The one Walter had spoken when he asked me to marry him.

The one I had signed on Emily's school forms.

The one I had written on birthday cards for Noah.

And someone had practiced turning it into a tool for taking my property.

I looked at Emily.

She couldn't meet my eyes.

Detective Harris continued.

One conversation showed Brian discussing the proposed loan.

He expected to use the money to cover business debts.

He also expected to complete the arrangement before I discovered it.

I watched the detective make notes.

"Did they ever ask me?" I said quietly.

She looked up.

"Not according to what we've seen."

I already knew that.

But hearing it confirmed still hurt.

Then she showed me something I hadn't seen before.

A photograph.

At first, I didn't understand what I was looking at.

Then I recognized the wallpaper.

My bedroom.

The photograph showed Diane standing beside my dresser.

She had my green coat hanging over one arm.

Behind her, my jewelry box was open.

I leaned closer.

There was the curtain Walter had chosen.

There was our wedding photograph on the dresser.

There was the little lamp I had bought years earlier.

And there was Diane.

Smiling.

Inside my private bedroom.

I put my hand over my mouth.

I had imagined someone entering my house.

I had found the empty envelope.

I had seen the missing ring.

But the photograph made it real in a way I hadn't expected.

She had stood where I dressed every morning.

She had been close enough to my belongings to touch them.

She had looked around a room filled with memories of my marriage.

And she had smiled for a photograph.

I turned to Emily.

"She was there?"

My daughter began crying.

I looked back at the detective.

"Did Brian let her in?"

Detective Harris said the messages indicated that Brian and Diane had entered my home while I was away.

She was still working out the exact timing.

I thought about my house key.

I had given Brian one years earlier.

I remembered telling him to keep it in case I fell or became ill.

I wanted somebody to be able to reach me quickly.

I had never considered that the same key could be used to take things from me.

I looked at the photograph again.

It felt almost unbearable.

Diane wasn't a stranger who had broken a window.

She was someone who had eaten at my table.

Someone I had greeted politely for years.

And she had stood in my bedroom as though she had every right to be there.

"Can you tell when that picture was taken?" I asked.

Detective Harris said they were examining the message history.

She couldn't give me a final answer yet.

I nodded.

I wanted the facts.

I didn't want guesses.

But there were already enough facts to make me feel ashamed of how trusting I had been.

I thought about all the times I'd invited family members into the house.

Birthdays.

Holiday dinners.

Sunday afternoons.

I had always wanted people to feel welcome.

I had never wanted my home to feel like a place where everyone needed permission to touch every little thing.

Now I realized how easily welcome could be abused.

Detective Harris turned another page.

She placed a property valuation in front of me.

I recognized my address immediately.

The document estimated my house at three hundred eighty-five thousand dollars.

I looked at the date.

Twelve days earlier.

I looked at the amount again.

Three hundred eighty-five thousand dollars.

I hadn't asked for a valuation.

I hadn't been thinking about selling.

I hadn't been planning to borrow against the property.

I intended to keep living there.

"Where did this come from?"

Detective Harris said Brian had arranged the valuation.

I felt my heart begin pounding.

"Without asking me?"

The detective said the evidence so far indicated that I had not authorized it.

I looked at Emily.

She had stopped crying.

She stared at the document as though it belonged to somebody else.

"Did you know about this?"

She swallowed.

"I knew they were looking at the value of the house."

"Did you know the amount?"

She nodded.

I rested my hands on the table.

Walter and I had bought that house when we were younger.

It wasn't large by some people's standards.

But it had been big enough for our family.

It had room for Emily when she was growing up.

It had a kitchen where Walter could sit with his notebook.

It had a porch where we could watch the street.

After Walter died, I stayed because the house still felt like ours.

Diane had apparently decided that I didn't need it.

Brian had arranged to have it valued.

Emily had known.

And nobody had asked whether I wanted to leave.

I looked at Detective Harris.

"Could they actually have taken my house?"

She explained that the loan application was being investigated.

The bank and relevant authorities were taking steps to prevent unauthorized transactions involving my property.

She couldn't promise that every problem was already resolved.

But the application hadn't simply been ignored.

I nodded.

I appreciated that she spoke carefully.

I had heard enough empty promises from Brian.

I didn't need another person telling me everything was fine before the facts were known.

I looked again at the valuation.

The number seemed to represent something very different from what my house meant to me.

To Brian, it might have meant a way out of debt.

To Diane, it might have meant money for helping him.

To me, it was where Walter had lived.

Where Emily had grown up.

Where I had learned to survive alone.

I couldn't explain the difference to them.

I wasn't certain they would care.

Detective Harris placed the documents together.

She told me the investigation now included the proposed loan, the financial records, and the evidence of unauthorized access to my home.

I asked whether Brian and Diane could be arrested.

She answered carefully.

The evidence would need to be reviewed.

The authorities would determine the proper next steps under the law.

I understood.

I wasn't asking her to ignore procedure.

I wanted the law to treat what happened seriously.

I wanted my age to matter only because it explained how vulnerable they had assumed I would be.

I didn't want pity.

I wanted my rights protected.

I looked at the detective.

"Then please keep going."

She nodded.

Emily sat beside me, saying very little.

I couldn't tell whether she was relieved to have told the truth or frightened by what might happen next.

Perhaps both.

I didn't ask.

I was too tired to manage her feelings.

After the meeting, I walked into the hallway.

I stood beside the little cabinet.

Its door was closed now.

But I could still picture the empty envelope.

I thought of Diane standing in my bedroom.

I thought of the property valuation.

Then I looked toward the front door.

I had always believed that a key meant trust.

I was beginning to understand that trust needed something more than handing somebody a piece of metal.

It needed honesty.

And the people closest to me had treated honesty as the one thing they could do without.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: When My Son-in-Law Called To
