I hope you're having an easier day than I am."

She smiled.

"What's happened?"

"Nothing serious. I'm trying to choose a birthday present for a boy who already has everything."

She laughed and asked how much I wanted to withdraw.

"Three hundred dollars, please."

I handed over my bank card.

She began working at her computer.

At first, everything seemed ordinary.

Then she stopped typing.

She looked at the screen for longer than usual.

Her smile faded.

I noticed her glance toward the office at the back of the branch.

"Is something wrong?"

She didn't answer immediately.

She clicked something, studied the screen again, and asked me to confirm my address.

I told her.

Then she asked for my identification.

I gave her the card I carried in my purse.

She examined it and looked back at the monitor.

I started feeling irritated.

I had been banking there for years.

I wasn't trying to borrow money or open a business.

I only wanted three hundred dollars for my grandson.

"Have I forgotten something?" I asked.

Brittany shook her head.

"No, Mrs. Lane. Could you give me just a moment?"

She stood and went to speak with another employee.

I watched them from the counter.

They kept their voices low.

Then the other employee walked toward the manager's office.

I felt that familiar tightening in my stomach.

The feeling you get when somebody knows bad news but hasn't told you yet.

Brittany returned.

"Mrs. Lane, would you mind coming with me?"

"Why?"

"Our manager needs to speak with you."

I looked down at my purse.

"Have I done something wrong?"

Her expression changed.

"Oh, no. Nothing like that."

But she still wouldn't tell me what was happening.

The manager, Mr. Okafor, met us near his office.

He had always been courteous to me.

That morning he looked unusually serious.

"Mrs. Lane, please come in and sit down."

I took the chair opposite his desk.

Brittany remained beside the door.

Mr. Okafor asked whether I had recently made several large withdrawals.

I frowned.

"No."

He looked at the paperwork in front of him.

"Are you certain?"

"I think I would remember taking a large amount of money out of my own account."

He nodded.

"Of course."

He turned the screen toward me.

There were three transactions listed.

Three withdrawals I had never made.

Together, they came to sixty-one thousand dollars.

I stared at the amount.

For a moment, I thought I was misunderstanding the figures.

I leaned closer.

"That's not possible."

Mr. Okafor spoke gently.

"That's why we wanted to speak to you."

I shook my head.

"I haven't withdrawn anything like that."

He asked whether I had authorized anyone to handle my account.

"No."

"Not even a relative?"

"Nobody."

He looked at Brittany.

Then he told me that someone had appeared at the bank claiming to be me.

The woman had presented identification.

She knew private information about my account.

She had apparently answered the security questions correctly.

I felt the blood leave my face.

"Someone pretended to be me?"

"That is what we're investigating."

I looked at the amount again.

Sixty-one thousand dollars.

Walter had spent forty years working so we would have something left when we got old.

He wasn't a wealthy man.

He was careful.

He saved a little whenever he could.

Every Sunday evening, he sat at our kitchen table with his old expense notebook.

He wrote down what we had spent.

Groceries.

Electricity.

Repairs.

Everything.

Sometimes I teased him about recording a purchase that cost only a few dollars.

He would smile and tell me that small amounts mattered too.

I hadn't always appreciated how careful he was.

After he died, I understood.

Those savings helped me stay in our home.

They helped me pay my bills without calling Emily every time something broke.

They gave me the freedom to be an old woman without feeling like a burden.

And now someone had taken sixty-one thousand dollars from that security.

I looked at Mr. Okafor.

"I want to know who did this."

He nodded.

"We have security footage."

"Then show me."

He hesitated.

"Mrs. Lane, I need you to understand that what we have doesn't necessarily identify everyone involved."

"I understand."

He turned to his computer.

Brittany moved closer.

The recording showed part of the bank lobby.

I could see the entrance and the counter where I usually stood.

Then a woman entered the frame.

She moved slowly.

Her hair was styled in a way that resembled mine.

She carried a handbag.

And she wore a dark green winter coat.

My green coat.

I leaned forward.

"Stop."

Mr. Okafor paused the recording.

I pointed at the screen.

"That coat belongs to me."

Brittany looked at me.

"You're sure?"

"Yes."

I knew every detail of it.

The collar.

The large buttons.

The way the fabric folded near the left pocket.

It had disappeared from my closet weeks earlier.

I had assumed I had put it somewhere unusual.

I wasn't the sort of person who lost many things, but I was eighty.

Sometimes I forgot where I had placed my glasses.

Sometimes I walked into a room and had to think about why I had gone there.

I had told myself the coat would turn up.

Now it had.

On another woman's back.

Mr. Okafor allowed the video to continue.

The woman turned toward the counter.

For a second, her face became clear.

I recognized her.

My heart started beating so hard that I felt it in my throat.

"Diane."

Mr. Okafor looked at me.

"Do you know her?"

I couldn't stop staring.

"That's Diane."

I took a breath.

"She's my son-in-law's mother."

Nobody spoke.

Diane.

The woman I had sat beside at family dinners.

The woman who had attended birthdays with us.

The woman who had smiled at me across holiday tables.

She had walked into my bank wearing my missing coat.

And she had pretended to be me.

I watched her speak to the teller.

She looked calm.

Comfortable.

As though she had rehearsed the whole thing.

That frightened me more than anything.

Because a person who steals that much money should look nervous.

At least that was what I had always believed.

Diane looked as if she were collecting money that already belonged to her.

"How did she get my identification?" I whispered.

Mr. Okafor said they were trying to establish that.

I remembered my bedroom drawer.

The place where I kept household papers and copies of important documents.

My daughter knew about that drawer.

Brian knew about it too.

Brian.

Emily's husband.

The man I had welcomed into our family eighteen years earlier.

He used to bring groceries into the house for me.

After Walter died, he offered to help with things I struggled to do alone.

I had trusted him.

I had trusted him with my house keys.

I had trusted him around my private papers.

I had never imagined I would have to question that trust.

Brittany asked whether I was feeling all right.

I told her I needed some water.

She brought me a glass.

My hands were shaking so badly that I had to put it down.

Mr. Okafor said the bank would begin investigating the withdrawals immediately.

He explained that my account needed protection.

I barely heard him.

My mind kept returning to the same question.

Why Diane?

And why my coat?

Then I thought of Emily.

My only daughter.

I reached for my phone.

Mr. Okafor asked whether I wanted to contact someone.

"Yes."

I found Emily's number.

My finger rested over it.

For one foolish second, I hoped she would answer and tell me there had been some terrible mistake.

That Diane had borrowed the coat for a harmless reason.

That someone else had used my account.

That this was all confusion.

I wanted to believe my family would have an explanation.

I pressed the call button.

Emily answered after several rings.

"Hi, Mom."

I swallowed.

"Emily, I'm at the bank."

"What's wrong?"

"Someone has been taking money from my account."

She became quiet.

I looked at the frozen image of Diane on the screen.

"Sixty-one thousand dollars, Emily."

Still nothing.

Then I told her about the security recording.

I told her I had recognized Diane.

Her mother-in-law.

I waited for Emily to sound shocked.

I waited for her to ask whether I was safe.

Instead, she started crying.

My stomach dropped.

Because I knew my daughter's voice.

I knew the difference between surprise and fear.

And I could hear fear.

"Emily, what aren't you telling me?"

She tried to speak.

Only a small broken sound came out.

I closed my eyes.

"Please don't lie to me."

She took a breath.

Then she said four words.

"It was Brian's idea."

I sat very still.

Brian.

Her husband.

The man who had called me Mom.

The man I had treated like a son.

My own daughter had just told me he was behind the theft.

And the worst part was that she didn't sound as though she had only discovered it.

She sounded as though she had been carrying the secret for days.

I looked back at Mr. Okafor.

Then at the security footage.

Then at the glass of water I still hadn't touched.

I had entered the bank thinking about a birthday gift.

Now I was sitting in a manager's office, listening to my daughter cry over money stolen from her own mother.

I didn't hang up.

I needed her to explain.

And for the first time in my life, I knew that hearing the truth from my child might hurt worse than hearing it from a stranger.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: My Daughter Admitted
