to fill it.

I had spent seven years rescuing everyone from awkward moments.

If somebody criticized the food, I laughed.

If someone damaged something, I minimized it.

If Juliette made a hurtful remark, I pretended it didn't bother me.

I had become very skilled at keeping conversations pleasant.

But pleasant wasn't always honest.

And now honesty was sitting between us like another guest.

Monica walked toward her station.

She looked at the folding table.

Then at the small are you really going along with this?”

He hesitated.

I felt that hesitation.

For a second, I wondered whether he would ask me to compromise.

It would have been familiar.

Not because he wanted to hurt me.

Because he hated seeing his mother upset.

He had always tried to find the easiest route through family disagreements.

Usually, that route involved asking me to give a little more.

I looked at him.

He looked at the papers still lying on the table.

Then at the garage.

Then back at his mother.

He didn't ask me to put everything away.

He didn't tell me I had made my point.

He didn't say we should forget the arms.

“You've all lost your minds.”

Nobody answered.

The children were playing again.

From somewhere beyond the property came the faint sound of fireworks.

The day was moving toward evening.

Families all around us were probably gathering around tables.

Eating.

Laughing.

Enjoying the holiday.

I had wanted exactly that for our family.

But I had finally accepted that our usual way of celebrating was hurting me.

And there was no kindness in pretending otherwise.

Juliette looked toward the serving dishes.

“After all these years, you're going to leave your own relatives hungry on a holiday?”

I held her family should behave.”

I felt a little sadness at those words.

Because I agreed with the first part.

Family shouldn't behave the way we had been behaving.

It shouldn't take three years of receipts to make people appreciate a shared meal.

It shouldn't take broken belongings to make someone consider the value of another person's home.

It shouldn't take a woman becoming exhausted before someone offered to wash a plate.

But here we were.

And I couldn't pretend the problem was mine alone anymore.

“I've never expected expensive gifts,” I said.

Juliette looked away.

“I've never asked anyone to bring something
