9 – My Brother Arrived Carrying the Green Dinosaur Blanket, and My Son Asked for Something That Made Me Realize He Still Didn’t Feel Safe

Eli was still asleep when I heard somebody knock softly on the hospital room door.

I looked up.

Marcus stood in the doorway.

My brother had two bags in his hands.

A green blanket was folded over one arm.

And tucked beneath his elbow was a stuffed rabbit I recognized immediately.

I hadn't seen that rabbit in months.

Eli had left it at Marcus's house during a visit.

I had forgotten about it.

Marcus hadn't.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

His eyes went straight to Eli's arm.

The fresh dressing was visible above the hospital blanket.

I watched my brother's face change.

His jaw tightened.

He looked at me.

I shook my head slightly.

Not here.

Not in front of Eli.

Marcus understood.

He set the bags down quietly.

"How's he doing?"

I glanced at the bed.

"He's tired."

Marcus nodded.

Then he looked at the sleeping boy again.

I could see the questions he wanted to ask.

How bad was the injury?

How long had it been happening?

Where was Shannon?

What had Troy said to the police?

I had some answers.

Others were still being investigated.

But none of those questions needed to be asked while Eli was sleeping.

Marcus pulled out a chair.

He sat beside me.

For a few minutes, we listened to the ordinary sounds of the hospital.

A cart passed outside.

Someone spoke at the nurses' station.

Eli shifted beneath the blanket.

Then he opened his eyes.

He looked at me first.

After that, he noticed Marcus.

His face changed.

"Uncle Marcus?"

My brother smiled.

"Hey, little guy."

Eli pushed himself upright.

Marcus leaned closer.

"Your dad said you might need a few things."

He lifted the green blanket.

It had dinosaurs printed across it.

Our mother had given it to Eli years earlier.

The fabric had softened after countless washes.

One corner was slightly worn.

Eli knew every inch of it.

Marcus spread it across the bed.

"Thought I'd bring some dinosaur security."

Eli smiled.

It was small.

But it was real.

Marcus pulled the stuffed rabbit from beneath his arm.

"And I found somebody who was waiting for you."

Eli's mouth opened.

"Benny?"

Marcus nodded.

"He's been staying at my place."

Eli reached for the rabbit with his good hand.

He held it against his chest beside his stuffed dog.

For the first time that day, I heard him laugh.

Just a little.

The sound caught me off guard.

I looked away because my eyes were filling again.

I had heard that laugh hundreds of times before.

In the backyard.

At the dinner table.

When Pickles did something ridiculous.

I hadn't realized how badly I needed to hear it.

Marcus glanced at me.

I knew he understood.

He didn't say anything.

Instead, he began asking Eli about Pickles.

"How's the boss doing?"

Eli looked confused for a moment.

Then he smiled.

"Pickles?"

"Who else runs your house?"

Eli giggled.

Marcus leaned back.

"Still refusing to eat the good vegetables?"

Eli shook his head.

"He likes some of them."

"Only the expensive ones?"

Eli laughed again.

I sat beside the bed and listened.

The conversation wasn't important in the way police statements were important.

Nobody was gathering evidence.

Nobody was asking about the stove.

Nobody was trying to establish what had happened in the shed.

They were talking about a bearded dragon.

And my son was smiling.

I held on to that moment.

After a while, Marcus asked whether Eli had been drawing.

Eli pointed toward the crooked picture beside his tray.

Pickles was wearing a cape.

Marcus picked it up.

"That is one dangerous-looking superhero."

Eli smiled.

"He saves people."

Marcus studied the picture.

"Does he?"

Eli nodded.

"Even little people."

My brother's expression softened.

He looked at the drawing for another moment.

Then he placed it carefully on the table.

"Sounds like a good superhero."

Eli rested against his pillows.

He looked tired again.

The day had been long.

He had been examined.

Questioned.

Moved from our house into an ambulance.

Treated by people he had never met.

And all of it had happened because I came home early.

I wanted to tell him he could stop being brave now.

But I had already learned that words alone weren't enough.

He needed to experience safety.

Again and again.

Until it began to feel normal.

Marcus opened one of the bags.

He had brought clothes.

A clean shirt.

Comfortable pants.

Socks.

A few things Eli liked wearing.

He also had school supplies.

I recognized the backpack.

The zipper pull was shaped like a dinosaur.

Eli had picked it himself.

Marcus placed everything where I could see it.

"Your dad asked me to bring your things."

Eli looked at the bags.

Then at Marcus.

"Did you go to our house?"

Marcus nodded.

"I collected what you needed after checking that it was okay."

Eli's smile disappeared.

He looked toward the doorway.

"Was Troy there?"

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

He looked at me.

I moved my chair closer.

"You're safe here, buddy."

Eli rubbed the edge of his blanket.

"But was he there?"

Marcus spoke calmly.

"I didn't have an argument with anybody."

Eli watched him.

Then he nodded.

I could see he wanted to ask more.

But he didn't.

He had spent so much time measuring what he could say.

I wondered how long that habit would last.

Marcus began telling him about the things he had brought.

He showed him the dinosaur blanket again.

He reminded him about the stuffed rabbit.

He asked whether he needed anything else.

Eli shook his head.

Then, after a pause, he asked a question I wasn't expecting.

"Can I stay at your house?"

Marcus stopped.

I felt something tighten in my chest.

Eli looked from my brother to me.

"Just for a little while?"

I wanted to answer immediately.

Of course.

Whatever made him comfortable.

But the social worker had explained that safety arrangements needed to be coordinated.

And I didn't want to promise something before it had been approved.

Marcus handled it better than I could have.

"We can talk with the people helping your dad about that."

Eli watched him.

"Would it be okay?"

Marcus smiled.

"I'd be glad to have you."

Eli looked relieved.

Then he asked, "Do you still have the blue sleeping bag?"

Marcus frowned slightly.

"Yeah. I think so."

"Can I use it?"

I felt the room go quiet.

Marcus looked at me.

I could see the same realization crossing his face.

My son wasn't asking about games.

Or snacks.

Or whether Marcus would let him stay up late.

He was asking where he would sleep.

And the first thing he thought of was a sleeping bag.

I leaned forward.

"Buddy, you wouldn't have to sleep on the floor."

He looked at me.

"Where would I sleep?"

"In a bed."

His eyes widened slightly.

"A real one?"

I swallowed.

Marcus answered.

"The guest room has a bed."

Eli looked at him.

"Can I use it?"

"Absolutely."

He rubbed the blanket between his fingers.

"Even if I make a mess?"

Marcus's expression changed.

He put the bag down.

"Eli, everybody makes messes sometimes."

My son watched him carefully.

"Even if I break something?"

My brother took a breath.

"Then we'd deal with whatever broke."

Eli seemed uncertain.

Marcus continued.

"You wouldn't lose your bed over it."

I looked down at my hands.

Those words should never have been necessary.

A child shouldn't need to be reassured that a mistake won't cost him somewhere safe to sleep.

Yet there we were.

In a hospital room.

Explaining the meaning of a bed.

Eli pulled the dinosaur blanket over his legs.

"Can I leave the light on?"

Marcus nodded.

"Sure."

"All night?"

"If that's what you need."

Eli considered that.

Then he looked at me.

"Dad, would you be mad?"

I leaned closer.

"About what?"

"If I stayed there."

I felt the question land.

I had spent years leaving for work.

Maybe Eli believed wanting to stay somewhere else meant he was rejecting me.

Maybe he was afraid I would see it that way.

I didn't want him to carry that burden.

"No, buddy."

He kept watching me.

"Even if I don't want to sleep at our house?"

I shook my head.

"That makes sense after what happened."

His eyes filled.

I reached for his hand.

"You can tell me what makes you feel safe."

He stared at me.

I continued.

"You don't have to choose something because you think it will make me happy."

He looked down.

"I like Uncle Marcus's house."

"I know."

"He has the blue sleeping bag."

Marcus almost smiled.

"And a real bed."

Eli nodded seriously.

"And two blankets?"

"At least two."

For a moment, we all smiled.

Then Eli leaned back against his pillow.

"I think I want to stay there."

I nodded.

"Then we'll talk to the people helping us and see how to arrange it safely."

He looked relieved.

I wanted to ask why he didn't want to come home with me.

I wanted to promise I would make our house safe immediately.

I wanted him to understand that Troy would not be allowed to treat him that way again.

But I didn't say any of those things.

Because the house still held the memories.

The kitchen.

The stairs.

The back door.

The path to the shed.

I could remove a person from a house.

I couldn't remove what Eli remembered.

Not in a single afternoon.

I sat beside him.

Marcus began putting the extra belongings away.

Eli watched him fold the blue shirt.

Then he asked if Marcus still had the spare pillow in the guest room.

My brother nodded.

"The same one."

Eli thought about that.

"Can I have Benny beside me?"

He lifted the stuffed rabbit.

Marcus smiled.

"He can have the whole other side of the bed."

Eli laughed softly.

I looked at my brother.

I had never been more grateful for him.

He wasn't trying to fix everything with a speech.

He wasn't pretending the investigation was over.

He was simply making room for Eli.

That was something I needed to learn.

Later, when Eli grew tired, Marcus stood to leave the room for a moment.

I followed him into the hallway.

As soon as the door was closed, his expression changed.

"What the hell happened to him, Cole?"

I leaned against the wall.

I told him more.

About the stove.

About Shannon admitting she knew.

About the shed.

Marcus pressed his lips together.

I could see his hands tightening.

"That man was living in your house?"

I nodded.

"And Eli was sleeping outside?"

"Yes."

Marcus looked toward the ceiling.

For a long time, he didn't speak.

Then he asked what I needed.

I told him the truth.

"I need you to stay calm."

He looked at me.

"I'm trying."

"I know."

I rubbed my face.

"He's scared of anger. I don't want him seeing more of it."

Marcus nodded slowly.

"You're right."

I could hear Eli moving inside the room.

I looked toward the door.

Marcus placed a hand on my shoulder.

"We'll help him."

I nodded.

I wanted to believe him.

But I knew this wasn't going to be simple.

We couldn't erase the nights in the shed.

We couldn't make the burn disappear.

We couldn't force Eli to trust adults just because we wanted him to.

We could only keep showing him that things were different.

I went back into the room.

Eli was sitting with his blanket pulled up.

He looked at me immediately.

"Are you coming back tomorrow?"

I sat beside him.

"Yes."

He watched my face.

"Even if I stay with Uncle Marcus?"

"Yes."

He seemed to need more.

I took his hand.

"I'll be there."

He nodded slowly.

Then he settled against his pillows.

I stayed until his eyes began to close.

Marcus sat quietly on the other side of the room.

And for a while, the only important thing was that Eli wasn't afraid to fall asleep.

Source: psndaily.xyz

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Safety Plan Meant My Son Would Spend the Night Away From Home, and His Question in the Parking Lot Broke My Heart

Eli was still asleep when I heard somebody knock softly on the hospital room door.
