That helps me know what you need."

Eli stared at her.

I watched him trying to understand.

To an adult, it was an ordinary instruction.

To my son, it seemed unfamiliar.

He was used to hiding pain.

Or explaining it away.

Or accepting responsibility for whatever had caused it.

Now somebody was telling him that saying he hurt was useful.

That it mattered.

I moved my chair closer.

"You can tell her, buddy."

He nodded.

The nurse continued carefully.

When he winced again, she paused.

"Does that spot hurt?"

He looked at me.

Then at her.

"Yes."

"Okay. I'll be gentle."

That was all.

No argument.

No accusation.

No lecture about being tough.

I felt a strange ache in my chest.

I had spent years telling Eli to speak up when something was wrong.

I thought he knew he could.

But those weeks in my absence had taught him something different.

They had taught him that speaking might make things worse.

I watched the nurse clean his arm.

The skin underneath the makeshift covering looked painful.

The doctor came in and examined it.

I listened as the injury was assessed.

The doctor explained that it would need appropriate treatment, careful wound care, and follow-up.

There were questions about when it happened.

How it happened.

What had been placed over it.

I answered what I knew.

When I didn't know something, I said so.

I wasn't going to fill in gaps just because I was angry.

I told them Eli had said Troy pushed him near the stove.

I explained that I had found written information on an old phone.

I showed the photographs.

I told them about the shed.

The doctor listened carefully.

There was no dramatic reaction.

No sudden declaration about everything that had happened.

Instead, the staff began documenting the injury and the circumstances.

I understood why.

If this was going to be investigated, people needed accurate information.

Not just my anger.

Not just my fear.

They needed to know what could be established.

That meant going over details I wished I could forget.

The sleeping bag.

The kitchen.

The duct tape.

The messages I had missed.

I answered the questions anyway.

Eli sat beside me while the nurse worked.

Sometimes he watched.

Sometimes he stared at the wall.

Whenever someone new entered the room, his fingers tightened around his stuffed dog.

I wanted to tell every person who came in to speak softly.

To move slowly.

To understand why he was nervous.

But I didn't need to explain everything.

The staff seemed to recognize that he needed patience.

One nurse asked if he wanted something to drink.

He looked at me.

I nodded.

He asked for water.

She brought it.

Then she asked whether he wanted a blanket.

He hesitated.

"Can I have one?"

She smiled.

"Of course."

She placed a clean blanket over his legs.

He looked down at it for a long moment.

I wondered whether he was remembering the shed.

I couldn't stop remembering it.

The hard floor.

The sleeping bag.

The stored tools.

The small space where he had been sent instead of being allowed to stay in his bedroom.

I looked at the hospital bed.

It wasn't comfortable in the way a child's bed should be.

But Eli seemed relieved that nobody was going to take it away because he made a mistake.

I hated that comparison.

I hated that it had become possible.

The doctor returned and explained the next steps.

The staff would also involve the appropriate professionals because of the concerns surrounding the injury and Eli's living situation.

I agreed immediately.

I had already contacted the police.

I wanted the people responsible for child safety to understand what had happened.

But I quickly learned that the process didn't move at the speed of my fear.

There were forms.

There were statements.

There were questions I had answered before.

I wanted everyone to look at Eli and understand the whole story without asking him to repeat painful things.

But I also understood that careful investigation mattered.

So I cooperated.

I provided the photographs.

I explained where I had found the old phone.

I described the entries without changing what Eli had written.

And I told them about the sleeping bag.

One question was especially difficult.

Had I known about the situation before returning home?

"No."

The word sounded weak.

It was true.

But it didn't feel like enough.

I hadn't known.

I had been offshore.

I had been working.

I had trusted Shannon.

I had accepted her explanations.

I had also noticed that Eli's calls were getting shorter.

I had heard his voice change.

I had watched him become quieter through a phone screen.

I couldn't deny any of that.

I told the staff honestly that I had noticed those things without understanding what they meant.

Saying it aloud made me ashamed.

I had spent years being proud of what I provided.

A mortgage paid on time.

Savings.

Insurance.

Money set aside for Eli's future.

I had thought those things made me a responsible father.

They mattered.

Of course they mattered.

But they had not protected him from what was happening inside our own home.

I looked at the hospital bed.

My son was sitting there with an injured arm.

He had spent nights in a shed.

He had tried to tell me something was wrong.

And I had been counting the days until my rotation ended.

A social worker arrived later.

She introduced herself to me first.

Then she spoke with Eli in a calm, age-appropriate way.

She explained that she wanted to understand what had been happening.

She asked whether he would feel comfortable speaking privately.

Eli looked at me.

I told him the truth.

"She's here to help people figure out how to keep you safe."

He nodded slowly.

The social worker made sure he understood what was happening before I stepped outside.

I didn't want to leave the room.

He didn't want to let go of my hand.

But I also understood that he needed a chance to speak without worrying about my reaction.

I squeezed his hand gently.

"I'll be right outside."

He studied me.

"Right outside?"

"Yes."

Then I let go.

The door closed.

I sat in a plastic chair in the hallway.

I put my elbows on my knees.

For the first time since coming home, I had nothing immediate to do.

No stove to turn off.

No tape to examine.

No bag to carry.

No questions to answer.

Just waiting.

It was unbearable.

I stared at the floor.

I thought about the house.

The mortgage.

The hours I had spent away.

All the times I had told myself Eli would understand when he grew up.

I wondered what he would remember instead.

Would he remember me leaving for work?

Would he remember the unanswered calls?

Would he remember sleeping outside?

I rubbed my eyes.

My phone vibrated.

Marcus.

He had received the photographs I sent earlier.

He wanted to know what was going on.

I read his message twice.

Then I replied.

I told him Eli was hurt.

I told him we were at the hospital.

I told him Troy had been living in the house and that Shannon knew more than she had admitted.

My phone rang almost immediately.

I answered.

"Cole, what happened?"

I looked toward Eli's room.

Then I told my brother.

I told him about the kitchen.

The shed.

The arm.

The old phone.

There were moments when I had to stop speaking.

Marcus didn't interrupt.

When I finished, there was silence.

Then he said, "I'm coming over."

I rubbed my forehead.

"Marcus, I need you to do something first."

"Tell me."

"Help me get Eli's things when it's safe to go back to the house."

"Okay."

"His backpack. Some clothes. Anything he needs."

"I'll handle it."

I took a breath.

"Don't get into an argument with Shannon or Troy."

Marcus was quiet.

Then he said, "I understand."

I knew how angry he would be.

I was angry too.

But Eli didn't need two more adults losing control.

He needed people who could help him calmly.

I remembered the blanket our mother had given him.

"Bring the green dinosaur blanket."

Marcus answered without hesitation.

"I know where he keeps it."

I closed my eyes.

"And anything else that makes him comfortable."

"I'll get it."

I thanked him.

He told me he was coming to the hospital afterward.

I didn't argue.

When the call ended, I sat there holding the phone.

Then I started crying.

Not loudly.

I lowered my head and tried to stop.

A nurse walked past.

She noticed.

She didn't ask me to explain.

She simply set a box of tissues beside me.

I took one.

Then another.

I was grateful she hadn't said anything.

I wasn't ready to hear that everything would be fine.

Nobody knew that yet.

The social worker came out after speaking with Eli.

She sat beside me.

I straightened.

I wanted to hear everything immediately.

But she spoke carefully.

She said Eli had shared information that raised serious concerns.

The priority was his immediate safety, continued medical care, and a plan for where he could stay safely.

I nodded.

"Can he come home with me?"

She explained that the appropriate people needed to assess the situation and coordinate the next steps.

I wanted a simple answer.

Yes.

No.

Something certain.

Instead, I was being told that it would take care and time.

I understood.

I didn't like it.

But I understood.

The social worker encouraged me to keep listening to Eli.

To stay calm.

To remind him that he wasn't responsible for being hurt.

I looked through the doorway.

Eli was sitting on the hospital bed.

A nurse had given him paper and crayons.

He was drawing.

I leaned forward slightly.

On the page was a crooked little picture of Pickles.

The bearded dragon had a superhero cape.

I almost laughed.

My son loved that lizard.

He had given it a cape because, in his mind, Pickles probably needed to be a hero too.

I wiped my face.

The picture wasn't a sign that everything had been fixed.

His arm still hurt.

The investigation had barely begun.

We still didn't know where he would feel safe sleeping.

But he was drawing again.

He was asking for crayons.

He was doing something that belonged to an eight-year-old boy.

I held on to that small moment.

Because I couldn't change what had happened before I got home.

All I could do was make sure that, from now on, when Eli needed something, somebody listened.

Source: psndaily.xyz

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: My Wife Finally Admitted She Knew About the Shed and the Burn, Then My Son Asked Whether He Had Ruined Our Family

The emergency department smelled like disinfectant and old coffee.
