These people came because I asked for help."

He stared at the officers.

One of them moved closer but stayed a few steps away.

He crouched so he wasn't towering over the bed.

"Hi, Eli. I'm Officer Daniels."

Eli said nothing.

Officer Daniels smiled gently.

"We just want to make sure you're okay."

My son looked at me.

I nodded.

"You can talk to him, buddy."

His fingers tightened around the stuffed dog.

Then he asked, "Is Troy angry?"

I felt my stomach drop.

There were police officers in his bedroom.

A medical officer was carrying supplies.

His father had returned unexpectedly from offshore work.

And the first thing he wanted to know was whether Troy was angry.

Officer Daniels answered before I could.

"You're not here to get in trouble with anybody."

Eli looked uncertain.

"Even if I did something wrong?"

I leaned toward him.

"You haven't done anything wrong."

He lowered his eyes.

I could tell he didn't quite believe me.

Officer Daniels kept his voice calm.

"Sometimes adults need help making sure children are safe. You did tell me."

He sniffed.

"I was scared."

"I know."

"I didn't know what would happen."

I nodded.

"You were trying to stay safe."

He looked confused.

I brushed his hair away from his forehead.

"That wasn't your job to figure out alone."

He stared at me.

I wanted to say a hundred things.

That I should have noticed.

That I should have called more.

That I should have recognized how frightened he sounded during our last conversations.

But he didn't need my guilt.

He needed me to take responsibility without making him comfort me.

So I stayed with the simple truth.

"You didn't cause any of this."

He looked down.

I repeated it.

"Nothing that happened to you was your fault."

He cried harder.

I held him.

For a few minutes, I forgot the officers were there.

I forgot Shannon was downstairs.

I forgot Troy had been sleeping in my house.

There was only Eli.

My little boy.

The child I had worked so hard to provide for.

And the terrible knowledge that he had spent weeks feeling alone.

When he finally lifted his head, I wiped his cheeks with a tissue.

The medical officer spoke softly.

"We're going to get you treated."

Eli looked at her.

"Will it hurt?"

"Some parts might be uncomfortable. We'll explain what we're doing and help you through it."

He nodded.

I was grateful she hadn't promised him something impossible.

He had heard enough promises that didn't match reality.

Downstairs, voices carried through the house.

An officer was speaking with Shannon.

Another was talking to Troy.

I could hear the boys moving around the living room.

For a moment, I pictured them watching the adults.

They were children too.

I wasn't angry with them.

I was angry about what they had been taught was normal.

A child making meals for everyone.

A child being punished for ordinary mistakes.

A child losing his bed because a grown man demanded obedience.

Those boys had witnessed a version of family life that should never have existed.

It wasn't Eli's responsibility to change them.

And it wasn't mine to punish them for their father's behavior.

The officers would deal with the adults.

My responsibility was sitting beside me.

The medical officer explained that Eli would be taken for treatment.

I asked whether I could accompany him.

She said yes.

I began gathering his things.

His stuffed dog went into his arms.

I checked for anything else he might need.

His green dinosaur blanket wasn't in the room.

I remembered that our mother had given it to him.

He had loved it from the moment she brought it over.

I wanted to find it.

But I also didn't want to delay his treatment.

I could ask Marcus to bring it later.

I turned toward Eli.

"Ready, buddy?"

He looked around.

Then he said my name.

"Dad?"

"Yeah?"

"Can Pickles come?"

I looked at the enclosure.

The little bearded dragon was resting under his light.

I remembered how Eli used to call me offshore just to report that Pickles had eaten a piece of vegetable.

That animal had been one of the few things he could still talk about without seeming frightened.

I wasn't going to dismiss the question.

"We'll bring him with us and make sure he's safe."

Eli looked relieved.

I secured the enclosure for transport.

I checked that everything was properly closed.

Then I took the belongings we could carry.

The medical officer helped us prepare to leave.

When Eli stood, he reached for my hand.

I took it.

He looked toward the doorway.

"Is Troy downstairs?"

"He's being spoken to by the officers."

Eli stopped.

I crouched beside him.

"You don't have to talk to Troy."

He looked at me.

"Not today?"

"Not today."

He nodded.

We walked through the hallway together.

At the stairs, I could feel him slowing down.

He didn't want to go past the living room.

I understood.

I asked whether he wanted me to carry him.

He nodded.

So I lifted him carefully.

He put his good arm around my neck.

His face rested against my shoulder.

He was getting too big for me to carry easily.

But I didn't care.

I held him close as we went downstairs.

I didn't look for Troy.

I didn't want another argument.

I kept moving toward the front door.

Outside, the morning sun had risen.

The air still carried that cool damp feeling before the day warmed up.

Police vehicles stood in the street.

A neighbor was watching from her porch.

I noticed her.

Then I looked away.

A few hours earlier, I would have worried about what people thought.

The police.

The neighbors.

The embarrassment.

Now I couldn't make myself care.

The truth had already happened.

Someone seeing the response to it didn't make that truth worse.

Eli pressed his face into my shoulder.

I felt him trembling again.

I held him tighter.

We reached the ambulance.

The medical officer helped us get settled.

I kept Eli's stuffed dog close to him.

I made sure the enclosure was being handled safely.

Then I sat beside my son.

He looked at the windows.

"Are we going far?"

"Just to the hospital."

He nodded.

"Will you come back with me afterward?"

I couldn't promise exactly where he would stay.

I didn't know what the safety arrangements would require.

So I told him what I could promise.

"I'll stay involved in every decision, and I'll make sure you know what's happening."

He thought about that.

Then he reached for my hand again.

I took it.

The ambulance began moving.

I looked out at the neighborhood disappearing behind us.

I had driven into it that morning thinking I was returning to the life I knew.

Now I was leaving my house with an injured little boy who had learned to fear being home.

I couldn't go backward.

I couldn't undo the nights he had spent outside.

But I could sit beside him.

I could listen.

And I could stop pretending that bringing home money was enough.

Source: <a href="https://psndaily.xyz/?p=13464" rel="noopener nofollow"
