2 – I Had No Baby to Feed, Yet Every Morning My Body Reminded Me of the Child I Had Buried

After Ada died, my body continued preparing to care for her.

That was the cruelty I had not been warned about.

My daughter was buried.

My arms were empty.

But my milk came in anyway.

I could not explain what that felt like to someone who had never experienced it.

I had lost the child who needed me.

And my body behaved as though she might cry for me at any moment.

The first time I realized what was happening, I felt almost foolish.

I had spent so much time thinking about Ada's breathing that I had forgotten what childbirth would do to me afterward.

My breasts grew painfully full.

There was pressure and tenderness.

A constant reminder of something I had expected to be ordinary.

I had imagined feeding my daughter.

I had imagined holding her against me while she swallowed.

I had even wondered whether I would know how to do it properly.

Those worries seemed unbearable to remember now.

I would have given anything to be uncertain about feeding a living child.

Instead, I had milk with nowhere to go.

My older sister, Martha Pike, had taken me into her home.

I knew she had done it because she cared about me.

I also knew that caring about someone did not make life with them easy.

Martha lived in a small farmhouse with her husband, Amos.

There was a spare room.

She offered me the bed.

I accepted because I had nowhere else I could manage to go.

I was twenty-seven.

I had been a wife.

For a little more than two hours, I had been able to hold my daughter.

Now I was my sister's widowed guest.

I disliked that word.

Guest.

It sounded temporary.

It sounded polite.

It made me feel as though I should always be ready to leave.

Martha did not say I had to earn my place.

Amos did not need to say it often.

I understood his opinion well enough.

He had permitted me to stay.

That did not mean he wanted another person becoming a permanent responsibility.

I could see it in the way he carried himself around the house.

I could hear it when he spoke about what was necessary and what was not.

And I felt it whenever I sat down to eat.

I learned to take less than I wanted.

Not because Martha refused me food.

She did not.

But I could not bear the thought of Amos looking at my plate and deciding I had become a burden.

So I made myself useful.

I prepared meals.

I washed clothing.

I scrubbed what needed scrubbing.

When a shirt needed mending, I repaired it.

I tried to notice work before anyone asked me to do it.

There was comfort in that at first.

A torn seam could be fixed.

A dirty garment could be made clean.

A meal could be prepared and put on the table.

These were problems with answers.

My life no longer had answers.

So I kept working on the smaller things.

I had not recovered from childbirth.

My body made that clear whenever I moved too quickly.

There was soreness low in my abdomen.

My hips ached.

Sometimes standing for too long made me feel as though I had used up what little strength I possessed.

I ignored what I could.

I rested only when I believed the work was finished.

Looking back, I know how badly I needed kindness.

But I was so afraid of being considered useless that I rarely allowed myself to need anything.

I kept my voice quiet.

I tried not to take up much space.

I arranged my few belongings in the spare room so they would not be in anyone's way.

There was not much to arrange.

Thomas's Bible mattered most.

I had kept it because it had belonged to him.

The sight of it reminded me that our marriage had happened.

That we had shared a life.

That there had been a time when I belonged somewhere without asking permission.

Sometimes I looked at the Bible without opening it.

That was enough to make me think of him.

Other times, I could not bear to look at it at all.

I did not know how to pray about Ada.

I did not know what I was supposed to ask for.

She was not sick anymore.

There was no treatment to hope for.

No recovery to wait through.

The worst thing had already happened.

I could ask for strength, I supposed.

But I had no idea what I was meant to do with strength.

Every morning, I woke in the spare room and remembered where I was.

That moment became familiar.

First came the awareness of the bed.

Then the farmhouse.

Then the truth.

Thomas was dead.

Ada was dead.

I was alive.

I hated how simple it sounded.

I would have preferred a complicated problem.

Something that required a decision.

Something I could solve by getting up and working harder.

Instead, all I could do was live through another day.

The mornings were worst because of the milk.

The pressure in my breasts would not allow me to forget what had happened.

I began rising before Martha and Amos were awake.

I did not want either of them to see.

I did not want to explain the pain.

I did not want someone to tell me that it was natural.

Natural.

I disliked that word almost as much as guest.

If this was natural, then nature had a cruel way of treating a grieving mother.

I would lean over a basin and relieve the pressure with my hands.

I used folded cloths.

I tried to be quick.

The whole time, I was aware of what I was doing.

I was removing nourishment from my body because the child it had been made for was gone.

There was no way to make that feel ordinary.

Sometimes I had to stop and steady myself.

Not because the task was difficult to understand.

Because I could picture Ada turning her head toward me.

I remembered her weak little mouth.

I remembered thinking she might latch on.

She had wanted to live.

I had wanted to feed her.

And now the milk came without her.

I did not cry every morning.

There were mornings when I felt nothing at all.

I completed the task.

Folded the cloths.

Cleaned the basin.

Then I went outside.

December had settled over Pine Hollow.

The earth was frozen.

Cold air reached through my clothes before I had taken more than a few steps.

I carried the basin carefully.

There was something humiliating about that care.

I was protecting the very thing I intended to throw away.

I knew it.

I could not help myself.

Outside, I emptied what I had collected onto the ground.

I watched it disappear against the hard winter earth.

Then I stood there for a moment.

I could never make myself leave immediately.

It seemed wrong that something meant to sustain a child should be poured away like dirty water.

I knew there was no reason to keep it.

Ada could not use it.

No amount of saving it would bring her back.

But those facts did not silence the thought that came every morning.

Somewhere, there might be a baby who needed milk.

Somewhere, there might be a mother unable to provide it.

Somewhere, something I was discarding might have mattered.

I did not know anyone who needed it.

The idea remained only a thought.

I would return inside and put the basin away.

Then I would find something useful to do.

That was how I managed my days.

I kept moving until I was too tired to think clearly.

Martha sometimes looked at me as though she wanted to speak.

I could see the concern.

I also saw her hesitation.

I knew she loved me.

I knew she had given me shelter.

I was grateful for both things.

But there were matters Martha would not challenge her husband over.

I was beginning to understand that the boundaries of her kindness were not entirely hers to decide.

It troubled me.

Then I felt guilty for being troubled.

She had opened her home.

What right did I have to ask for more?

I told myself I should appreciate what I had.

A bed.

Food.

A roof against the winter weather.

There were people with less.

I knew that.

Gratitude did not change the ache in my chest.

It did not stop the milk.

It did not bring back Thomas.

And it certainly did not bring back Ada.

At meals, I tried to behave like someone who was recovering.

I sat where I was expected to sit.

I answered questions when they were put to me.

I did not talk about Ada unless I had to.

Her name felt too precious to place casually among conversation about meals and household work.

I worried that someone might speak of her as though she were only a sad event that had passed.

I could not bear that.

She had been a person.

Small.

Weak.

Here for less than three hours.

But a person.

I wanted that remembered.

I wanted it so badly that sometimes I kept silent rather than risk hearing someone speak carelessly.

There were moments when I wondered whether Amos thought I should already be doing better.

He did not need to know everything that happened inside my head.

I did not want him to.

I had seen enough of his attitude to understand that grief would not excuse me from the expectations of his household.

So I did my work.

If I felt faint, I slowed down.

If my body hurt, I kept quiet.

If I needed to cry, I waited until I was alone.

That last habit became the hardest one to break.

I had been surrounded by people during Ada's birth.

There had been hands ready to help.

A doctor.

A midwife.

Voices explaining what was happening.

But when the room emptied, the loss belonged to me.

Nobody could carry it for me.

I had to get out of bed with it.

I had to prepare food with it.

I had to bend over the basin with it.

And I had to watch what my body produced disappear into frozen ground.

I thought perhaps that was simply what my life would become.

Work quietly.

Eat little.

Remember everything.

Ask for nothing.

I had already lost the two people whose presence made the future feel possible.

I could not imagine beginning again.

And I did not expect the world to ask me to.

On the third evening after Ada's burial, I was in the kitchen.

It was an ordinary moment in a house where I had been trying very hard to be ordinary.

Then someone struck the front door.

The knocking was urgent enough to make me stop what I was doing.

I heard Amos move toward the entrance.

A man's voice followed.

I did not recognize it.

But I recognized something in the way he spoke.

He sounded like a person who had reached the end of what he knew how to do.

And before I heard his name, I understood that someone on the other side of that door was afraid.

Source: <a
