18 – I Still Wanted Daniel to Regret Asking for Divorce, but I Was Beginning to Understand That an Apology Could Not Give Me Back the Marriage I Imagined

I missed the future I had expected.

That was different from missing the life I had actually been living.

It took me a while to recognize the difference.

I missed the idea of telling Daniel about the pregnancy.

I missed imagining the questions he would ask.

I missed believing we would plan for the baby together.

I missed thinking that seven years of marriage had given us something steady.

But when I remembered our ordinary days, I also remembered how carefully I had spoken.

I remembered being afraid of Marissa's comments.

I remembered Daniel looking at me whenever his sister complained about spending.

I remembered the way I often apologized just to end an uncomfortable conversation.

Those things belonged to the marriage too.

I couldn't keep removing them from the picture simply because I wanted to remember something happier.

I had loved Daniel.

I didn't need to deny that.

But loving him hadn't protected me from feeling alone.

And being married hadn't guaranteed that we understood each other.

I had believed those things for a long time.

Now I was being forced to question them.

I looked at the phone.

The exchange about the divorce papers remained unfinished.

I had asked Daniel to send them.

He had answered after I canceled the payment.

I hadn't forgotten the timing.

But I was trying not to turn it into certainty about his motives.

I didn't know exactly what he understood.

I didn't know what his family had told him.

I didn't know whether he connected the cancellation with everything I had paid over the years.

I could only say what had happened.

I had left.

I had asked for the papers.

I had stopped the payment.

And he had responded.

The rest required an actual conversation.

I thought about how much of our marriage had depended on conversations we never had.

Money was one example.

I paid expenses his family assumed came from him.

I didn't correct them.

Daniel didn't correct them either.

And the misunderstanding continued until Marissa used it to criticize me.

I had thought staying quiet was the easiest option.

It was easier in the moment.

But every quiet moment made the next one more difficult.

Eventually, correcting the misunderstanding felt like an accusation.

As though I would be embarrassing everyone by saying something that had always been true.

I had paid.

That was all.

I could have said it years earlier.

I didn't have to present the payments as proof that I was better than anyone.

I could simply have been honest.

I wished I had understood that.

I thought about the first trimester book.

I had ordered it because I wanted information.

I wanted to know what to expect.

I wanted to prepare carefully.

It had seemed like such an ordinary purchase.

But the book became part of the reason Marissa criticized me.

She hadn't opened it.

She hadn't asked why I needed it.

She had only seen another delivery.

And Daniel had accepted her complaint as something worth questioning.

I wondered how he would remember that exchange when he learned I was pregnant.

Would he be embarrassed?

Would he apologize?

Would he explain why he hadn't asked what the packages contained?

I couldn't answer those questions.

But I knew I wanted him to understand something.

Even if the book had been about an ordinary interest, I shouldn't have needed his sister's approval to buy it.

The pregnancy made the purchase more important to me.

It didn't create my right to make the purchase.

That right had existed all along.

I had forgotten it.

I thought about the sweaters.

They were meant to make me comfortable as my body changed.

I hadn't bought them for Marissa to inspect.

I hadn't bought them for Daniel to approve.

I had chosen them because I expected to need them.

Yet the moment his sister commented, I had begun defending myself.

I had almost apologized.

That was how automatic the habit had become.

I wondered whether I would have done the same with baby clothes.

Would I have explained why a child needed something?

Would I have worried about Marissa calling it unnecessary?

Would I have waited for Daniel to agree before trusting my own judgment?

I didn't want to find out by continuing the same pattern.

Something had to change.

I knew that now.

I remembered dinner again.

The room had been full of people.

And somehow, I had never felt more alone.

The smell of the food was strong.

The nausea was already bothering me.

I had prepared everything carefully.

Then Marissa began talking about my supposed dependence on Daniel.

I wanted him to say something.

I waited.

And instead of defending me, he suggested divorce.

I still couldn't understand why he chose that moment.

Perhaps I never would.

But I could understand how it affected me.

I felt humiliated.

I felt frightened.

And I felt as though the years I had spent building a life with him meant very little at that table.

I remembered his mother opening pistachios.

I remembered Evan with dessert.

I remembered Marissa reaching for more chicken.

Nobody stopped the meal.

That detail had become impossible to separate from Daniel's words.

If he had asked for divorce privately, it would still have hurt.

But the public way he said it made the hurt different.

It left me feeling as though my marriage was being discussed in front of an audience that had already decided I was the problem.

I had spent years trying to be accepted by that audience.

Then the marriage itself became another subject they could witness without offering me much consideration.

I couldn't remain there.

So I left.

I had wondered whether I should have stayed to ask more questions.

Perhaps I should have demanded an explanation.

Perhaps I should have insisted Daniel speak privately.

Perhaps I should have told Marissa exactly how much money I had paid for her family.

Those were possibilities.

But I had been exhausted.

I was pregnant.

I felt sick.

And Daniel had already announced that he wanted our marriage to end.

I couldn't ask myself to behave perfectly in that moment.

I had done what I could.

I packed one suitcase.

I left.

I sent the message.

That was enough.

I thought about the apology I wanted.

I imagined Daniel acknowledging that he had chosen a terrible moment to speak.

I imagined him recognizing the unfairness of Marissa's accusations.

I imagined him saying that I had deserved better.

I wanted those words.

I still did.

But I began asking myself what would happen after them.

Would the financial misunderstanding be corrected?

Would Marissa stop treating my purchases as her business?

Would Daniel be willing to have difficult conversations without allowing his family to interfere?

Would I feel comfortable expressing my needs?

An apology alone couldn't answer those questions.

It might acknowledge the past.

It might help me feel heard.

But it wouldn't automatically create a different future.

I had to remember that.

I had spent years treating small moments of reassurance as proof that everything would eventually improve.

Sometimes a pleasant evening made me forget an earlier argument.

Sometimes a quiet day convinced me the tension had passed.

Sometimes Daniel's ordinary familiarity made me believe our marriage was secure.

Then the next criticism came.

And I found myself explaining again.

I didn't want to repeat that cycle simply because I missed him.

I wanted change that could be seen in ordinary behavior.

Respect when we disagreed.

Honesty about money.

Privacy when discussing the marriage.

Consideration for my needs.

Those were not impossible things.

They were basic things.

And I was beginning to understand that I had accepted too little for too long.

I thought about the canceled payment.

It had made me feel guilty because his family's needs remained real.

Marissa still needed health insurance.

Daniel's mother still needed medical care.

Evan still had school expenses.

I couldn't pretend those things had stopped mattering.

But I also couldn't pretend my circumstances were unchanged.

I was facing divorce.

I was carrying a baby.

I needed to consider the future carefully.

And I could no longer make open-ended commitments simply because I feared upsetting people.

That was the difference.

I wasn't trying to erase the help I had given.

I wasn't claiming the family had never needed it.

I was recognizing that my ability and willingness to help were not permanent obligations.

I had to think about myself too.

For years, that thought had made me uncomfortable.

Now it seemed unavoidable.

I thought about Daniel's mother.

I wondered whether she would ever acknowledge the payments I had made.

Then I realized I was still waiting for recognition.

I didn't want to keep doing that.

Her gratitude would not determine whether the payments had happened.

Marissa's opinion would not determine whether I had been generous.

Daniel's reaction would not determine whether I had the right to reconsider financial support.

I could know those things myself.

I didn't need to keep presenting evidence.

The money had gone where I intended.

The bills had been covered.

I knew what I had done.

That was enough to establish the truth.

I looked at my suitcase.

I thought about the life I had expected to return to after dinner.

A familiar home.

A husband who would finally know about the baby.

The beginning of preparations for a different kind of family life.

Instead, I had left with uncertainty.

I didn't know how the divorce would proceed.

I didn't know how Daniel would respond to the pregnancy.

I didn't know what his family would believe about the canceled payment.

Those questions remained.

But I was beginning to understand that uncertainty wasn't always a reason to return to what was familiar.

Sometimes the familiar thing was the source of the problem.

I had known how to live in Daniel's house.

I knew how to prepare meals.

I knew how to avoid arguments.

I knew how to handle payments quietly.

But I had stopped knowing how to feel comfortable being myself.

That mattered.

I didn't want to ignore it simply because the future frightened me.

I rested my hand against my stomach.

The baby was still a secret from Daniel.

I knew the conversation couldn't be avoided indefinitely.

I also knew it needed to be separate from my desire for an apology.

I wanted him to understand that I had been pregnant during dinner.

I wanted him to know what I had planned to tell him afterward.

But I didn't want to present the pregnancy as proof that he was obligated to love me.

He was responsible for his choices.

I was responsible for mine.

And both of us would have responsibilities toward our child.

That truth was more important than whether the marriage could be repaired.

I thought about what I wanted the baby to learn someday.

I wanted my child to understand that people could be disappointed and still deserve kindness.

That disagreements didn't justify humiliation.

That love didn't require silence.

And that helping someone was not the same as allowing them to control you.

Those lessons were becoming clearer to me.

I wished I had learned them before marriage.

But I couldn't change when I understood something.

I could only decide what to do with it.

I put the phone down.

I still wanted Daniel to regret dinner.

I still wanted to hear that he understood.

But I no longer believed his apology would be enough by itself.

If our marriage ever meant something different, it would require more than words.

It would require honesty about the things we had avoided.

And whether or not that happened, I needed to continue taking care of myself.

That was the decision I could make without waiting for him.

<a
