2 – For Years I Quietly Covered His Family’s Bills, Yet His Sister Treated Every Small Purchase I Made Like Money Stolen From Him

The strangest part was that Marissa never had to ask where the money came from.

She simply accepted that someone would take care of things.

And for years, that someone had been me.

I don't know exactly when helping Daniel's family became my responsibility.

There wasn't one big conversation.

Nobody sat me down and said that I should pay their bills.

It happened through a series of needs.

A problem came up.

I could afford to help.

I paid.

Then another problem came along.

I paid again.

Eventually, the payments became so ordinary that nobody seemed to remember there had ever been a choice.

Marissa's health insurance was one of those expenses.

After her divorce, she needed coverage.

I knew she had enough to worry about without adding another bill.

So I helped.

I made sure the insurance was paid.

I didn't make an announcement.

I didn't expect her to tell everyone what I had done.

I only wanted her to have that burden taken off her shoulders.

At the time, I thought it was a decent thing to do.

I still think helping someone through a difficult period can be a decent thing.

What I regret is how completely I erased myself from the arrangement.

Marissa didn't treat me like someone who had supported her.

She treated me like someone living off her brother.

Those two realities existed side by side for years.

I paid an expense that mattered to her.

She questioned whether I had a right to buy something for myself.

And I let the contradiction stand.

Daniel's mother had her own expenses.

Therapy.

Prescriptions.

The sorts of bills that don't disappear because a family finds them inconvenient.

I knew they were important.

I didn't want her worrying about whether she could continue getting the care she needed.

So I sent money for those costs too.

Again, I kept it quiet.

I thought there was dignity in helping without making someone explain their circumstances to the rest of the family.

I didn't want Daniel's mother to feel embarrassed.

I didn't want Marissa to feel indebted.

I wanted people to have what they needed.

That sounds generous when I say it that way.

And part of it was.

But there was another part I had trouble admitting.

I also wanted them to like me.

I wanted to become someone they were happy to have in the family.

I believed that being reliable would eventually matter.

If I was helpful enough, perhaps Marissa would stop making those little remarks.

If I was thoughtful enough, perhaps Daniel's mother would recognize how hard I tried.

If I never caused trouble, perhaps Daniel would appreciate the peace I created.

I was always adding another condition.

Another way to earn something that should not have required a payment.

Then there was Evan.

Marissa's son.

He attended a private academy, and the tuition was expensive.

Five thousand dollars each semester.

I remember that amount because I saw it so often.

Five thousand.

Not an occasional gift.

Not money for a birthday or a holiday.

A recurring school expense that somebody had to cover.

I paid the academy directly.

I knew where the payment went.

I knew what it was for.

And I made sure it was handled.

I did that semester after semester.

I never wanted Evan's education to become a weapon in an argument between adults.

Whatever I thought of Marissa, he deserved the opportunity to continue at his school without being made responsible for our problems.

He was a teenager.

He had not created the arrangement.

He had not asked me to keep quiet about it.

I couldn't blame him for what he didn't know.

The adults were different.

They could have asked questions.

They could have checked who was paying.

They could have wondered how their needs were being covered while they kept describing me as someone who contributed nothing.

Instead, the family carried on with an assumption.

Daniel was the one earning.

Daniel was the one providing.

I was the wife spending what he brought home.

It was a story they seemed comfortable telling.

Marissa especially.

She had a way of speaking about money that made it sound like a test of character.

When she talked about Daniel, work meant responsibility.

When she talked about me, being at home meant laziness.

If Daniel paid for something, he was generous.

If I bought something, I was wasteful.

I often wondered what she thought I did all day.

Then I realized she had never shown much interest in finding out.

She saw me in the house.

She saw me cooking.

She saw the results of things I handled.

That was enough for her to decide I had an easy life.

She didn't see the payments I made.

Or the decisions behind them.

Or the way I sometimes sat with another expense and thought about whether someone was depending on me to cover it.

I had made my contribution invisible.

Then I became upset when people failed to see it.

Looking back, I should have spoken plainly much sooner.

Not to demand praise.

To establish what was true.

There is a difference.

I had confused silence with kindness.

And because I didn't correct the assumptions, they became part of the family routine.

Daniel never seemed uncomfortable with the credit.

That was one of the things I avoided thinking about.

He knew who I was.

He knew I wasn't simply spending his money.

He had watched me take care of things that had nothing to do with my personal shopping.

Yet when Marissa accused me of wasting money, he never seemed eager to explain.

He could have ended the conversation with a few words.

He could have said I had paid for those packages myself.

He could have reminded his sister that our finances were not hers to supervise.

Instead, he asked me to justify myself.

I kept wondering why.

Maybe he disliked conflict with Marissa.

Maybe he preferred letting her believe what she believed.

I didn't know.

I couldn't know without asking.

And I had spent years avoiding that kind of question.

I was afraid the answer would tell me something about our marriage that I wasn't ready to hear.

So I concentrated on ordinary things.

Meals.

Shopping.

Family obligations.

The small tasks that filled a day.

There was always something that needed doing.

And there was something reassuring about being busy.

If my hands were occupied, I didn't have to examine how lonely I had become.

When the prenatal packages arrived, I was happy for a moment.

They were small, practical purchases.

A bottle of vitamins.

Clothes that might feel better as my pregnancy continued.

A book to help me understand what was happening inside my body.

I hadn't bought them to impress anyone.

I hadn't even bought them because I wanted to indulge myself.

I bought them because I was pregnant.

Because I was going to need them.

Because for the first time in a long time, I was planning something around my own future.

Then Marissa saw the packages.

And suddenly, something that had felt private and hopeful became another opportunity to criticize me.

I could still hear her tone while I prepared dinner.

That suggestion that I had bought too much.

That little assumption that Daniel would be the one paying.

It was such a familiar accusation that I almost accepted it as normal.

Almost.

But something had changed.

I was carrying a child.

I was beginning to think about what our home would feel like with a baby in it.

And I found myself wondering how many times I would have to defend ordinary needs.

Would I still be explaining every purchase?

Would Marissa have something to say about baby clothes too?

Would Daniel continue looking at me whenever his sister complained?

Those questions bothered me.

I tried to push them away.

I told myself I was getting ahead of things.

Daniel didn't even know about the pregnancy yet.

It wasn't fair to imagine his reaction before giving him the news.

But I couldn't ignore what I already knew.

He had not asked why I needed vitamins.

He had not asked why I was buying looser clothing.

He hadn't shown any interest beyond the price.

I wanted to believe he would be different when he understood.

That was what kept me from speaking at the wrong moment.

I wanted to tell him privately.

I wanted to see his face when there was no one else in the room.

I didn't want Marissa commenting on my pregnancy before Daniel had time to understand it.

I didn't want his mother making the conversation about her own expectations.

And I didn't want Evan sitting through another uncomfortable exchange between adults.

So I waited.

I cooked.

I set out the food.

I made myself useful.

For seven years, usefulness had been the one role I knew how to perform without anyone questioning me.

I could prepare dinner for people who thought I did very little.

I could help pay for their needs while being accused of spending too much.

I could protect their pride even when they made no effort to protect mine.

But I was beginning to feel the weight of it.

Not all at once.

It was more like realizing that I had been carrying something heavy for so long that I no longer remembered how it felt to put it down.

I looked at the serving spoon in my hand.

The onions had softened.

The chicken was ready.

The salmon smelled strongly of lemon.

I wasn't sure I could eat any of it.

Still, I brought everything out.

Because that was what everyone expected.

I had paid for Marissa's insurance.

I had helped with her mother's treatment and prescriptions.

I had covered Evan's tuition.

And now I was making dinner for the same people who treated my most ordinary purchases as a financial offense.

I kept thinking that there was something terribly wrong with that picture.

I just hadn't yet decided what I would do about it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: At the Family Dinner I Prepared While Fighting Morning Sickness, My Sister-in-Law
