15 – The Rancher Was Learning to Care for Molly, but I Had to Decide Whether Helping Them Was Worth Trusting Him Again

I had never been good at staying somewhere without knowing my place.

A kitchen made sense to me.

Someone needed supper.

I cooked.

Someone needed dishes washed.

I washed them.

Someone needed bread.

I made it.

The work gave every hour a purpose.

But at the Walker ranch, things were becoming less simple.

Molly was no longer expected to carry the whole household.

Her father was beginning to notice the work inside his own home.

And I had been asked to stay without being told exactly what I was supposed to be.

That uncertainty bothered me.

More than I wanted to admit.

I had agreed to one extra day.

The morning had passed.

Then the afternoon began slipping away.

I kept looking toward the window.

The sun was still fierce.

The road beyond the yard looked pale with dust.

My feet were healing slowly.

I knew I couldn't walk far comfortably.

But that wasn't the only reason I hesitated to leave.

I kept thinking about Molly.

The way she had leaned against my arm.

The way she had asked whether she could wear her mother's apron without cooking.

The way her face had changed when her father told her she didn't have to look after him.

I had seen children relieved before.

But Molly's relief was different.

It seemed to surprise her.

As though she had been carrying something so long that she had forgotten what it felt like to put it down.

I wanted that feeling to last.

I wanted her to have more than one peaceful morning.

But wanting something didn't give me the right to remain.

And it certainly didn't make the rancher trustworthy overnight.

I looked toward the kitchen doorway.

He was outside attending to work that couldn't be postponed.

I had watched him leave.

Before going, he had spoken to Molly.

He told her not to lift anything heavy.

He told her she could rest.

He asked whether she needed anything.

She had said she was fine.

He had stopped.

Then asked again.

This time, she admitted she was a little tired.

He had smiled.

"Then rest."

I had watched that exchange carefully.

It was simple.

But it was progress.

He had remembered what we discussed.

He hadn't accepted her first answer without listening.

He hadn't treated her tiredness as a nuisance.

He had made room for it.

Still, I wondered whether he would remember after several difficult days.

I had seen promises fade before.

People meant well when they made them.

Then life became inconvenient.

The old habits returned.

And the person who needed care learned not to ask again.

I didn't want that for Molly.

I also didn't want to become responsible for preventing it.

That was a hard truth.

I cared about the girl.

But I couldn't build her father's conscience for him.

He had to do that himself.

I sat at the table.

The cracked plate was in front of me.

I had washed it earlier and set it aside.

It was still useful.

But the crack was growing worse.

I traced it with one finger.

I wondered why I kept noticing that plate.

Perhaps because it reminded me of myself.

Still doing the work.

Still holding together.

Still pretending the damage didn't matter.

I had spent years telling people I was fine.

Just as Molly had.

I had worked through hunger.

Pain.

Loneliness.

Humiliation.

I had accepted whatever space somebody offered me, then tried to deserve it through labor.

I had become very good at surviving.

Not very good at being cared for.

Molly came into the kitchen.

She stopped beside my chair.

"What are you doing?"

I looked up.

"Thinking."

She considered that.

"About supper?"

I smiled.

"Not this time."

She looked surprised.

I laughed quietly.

"Even cooks think about other things."

She climbed into the chair beside me.

I watched her settle.

Her feet swung above the floor.

She wasn't wearing the apron.

I was glad.

Not because I disliked it.

Because she had begun to understand she could sit at the table without having a job.

She looked toward the cracked plate.

"That one's old."

I nodded.

"It is."

"Papa says it still works."

I looked at her.

"He isn't wrong."

She touched the edge carefully.

"But it might break."

I studied the crack.

"Yes."

She looked at me.

"Should we use another?"

I smiled.

"Probably."

She nodded seriously.

Then she moved the plate aside.

It was such an ordinary thing.

But I felt the meaning of it.

Something could still work and still need replacing.

Something could have served its purpose for years and still be too damaged to carry the same weight.

I wondered whether I was thinking about the plate or my own life.

Perhaps both.

Molly leaned against the table.

"Are you leaving tomorrow?"

I felt my chest tighten.

I had been expecting the question.

Still, I wasn't ready.

"I haven't decided."

She looked down.

"Oh."

I reached toward her hand.

"Sweetheart, I don't want to promise you something I can't keep."

She nodded.

I could see she understood the words.

But understanding didn't make them easy.

She looked toward the window.

"Papa says your feet hurt."

"They do."

"Then you shouldn't walk."

I smiled faintly.

"That would be one reason to stay."

She looked at me.

"What's the other reason?"

I hesitated.

She waited.

I didn't know how to explain everything I felt.

I couldn't tell a nine-year-old that I was afraid of needing people.

That I had spent years moving because leaving was easier than being rejected.

That her father's gun had frightened me badly.

That his kindness now frightened me in a different way.

So I answered simply.

"I like seeing you smile."

Her face brightened.

Then she became serious.

"I like when you're here."

I looked away.

I wasn't prepared for that.

I had been wanted for my cooking before.

For my strong hands.

For my willingness to work long hours.

But Molly wasn't asking me to cook.

She was asking me to be present.

I felt the difference.

It hurt.

Not because it was unpleasant.

Because I didn't know what to do with it.

I took a breath.

"Thank you."

She nodded.

Then she looked toward the stove.

"Can we make bread again?"

I smiled.

"We can."

She brightened.

"But not because you have to."

She looked at me.

I continued.

"Because you enjoy it."

She considered that.

Then nodded.

"I do."

I stood slowly.

My feet still ached.

She noticed.

"Are you hurt?"

"Only sore."

She frowned.

"You're saying you're fine."

I stopped.

Then I laughed.

A genuine laugh.

I hadn't expected her to catch me using the same words I had been correcting her for.

She looked pleased.

I shook my head.

"You're right."

She waited.

I took a breath.

"My feet hurt. I'm tired. And I probably ought to sit more than I have been."

She nodded solemnly.

"Then sit."

I looked at the stove.

Then back at her.

"Perhaps I should."

She smiled.

I sat again.

It was one of the strangest lessons I had learned in that house.

A nine-year-old girl had reminded me to practice what I preached.

If she was allowed to rest, why wasn't I?

If she was allowed to ask for help, why did I keep pretending I needed none?

I looked at my hands.

They were broad.

Marked by years of work.

There were small scars near my fingers.

Burns that had faded.

Cuts that had healed.

I had always been proud of those hands.

They had kept me alive.

But perhaps I had asked too much of them.

Perhaps I had made work the only reason I believed I deserved a place anywhere.

Molly leaned against my arm again.

I let her.

We sat quietly.

Then I heard footsteps outside.

The rancher returned.

He paused in the doorway.

His eyes moved from Molly to me.

He smiled faintly.

"How's everyone doing?"

Molly lifted her head.

"Miss Abigail's feet hurt."

I felt my face grow warm.

The rancher looked concerned.

"They still bad?"

I sighed.

"Not pleasant."

He nodded.

"You shouldn't be standing so much."

Molly looked pleased.

"That's what I told her."

He glanced at his daughter.

Then at me.

I could see the amusement in his eyes.

"Sounds like sensible advice."

I shook my head.

"You're both becoming troublesome."

Molly giggled.

Her father smiled.

For a moment, the kitchen felt warm.

Not because of the stove.

Because nobody was frightened.

Nobody was being ordered to work.

Nobody was trying to hide a need.

I wanted to remember that.

Then the rancher looked toward my satchel.

His smile faded slightly.

He knew why it was still there.

I saw him consider his words.

"Miss Turner."

I looked up.

"Yes?"

"Would you mind speaking with me?"

Molly looked between us.

I felt a familiar tightness in my stomach.

I had heard that sort of request before.

From employers who were about to dismiss me.

From people who had decided they didn't need my services anymore.

I told myself not to assume the worst.

But old fears were difficult to silence.

"Of course."

The rancher glanced toward Molly.

"Would you stay here a little while?"

She nodded.

"Yes, Papa."

Then she looked at me.

I gave her a small smile.

She seemed reassured.

I followed her father toward the other room.

My feet hurt.

He noticed and slowed his steps.

That small courtesy surprised me.

I wished it didn't.

We stopped where we could speak without Molly hearing every word.

He looked uncomfortable.

I waited.

He rubbed his hands together.

Then spoke.

"I've been thinking about what you said."

I looked at him.

"Which part?"

He gave a tired smile.

"Most of it."

I waited.

He looked toward the kitchen.

"Molly needs more than I've been giving her."

I nodded.

"Yes."

"I know that now."

I didn't answer.

He continued.

"I don't want her going back to how things were."

I studied him.

Neither did I.

But wanting change wasn't the same as making it.

He seemed to understand that.

"I need to learn."

I nodded.

He looked at me.

"And I could use help while I do."

My heart began beating faster.

I didn't know where he was going.

I didn't know whether I wanted him to ask.

But I listened.

He took a breath.

"I'd like you to stay longer."

I looked toward the kitchen.

Molly was still sitting at the table.

I could see the top of her head through the doorway.

She was looking at the apron.

Not wearing it.

Just looking.

I felt something tighten in my chest.

The rancher continued.

"Not because I expect you to do everything."

I turned back.

He met my eyes.

"Because I don't want my daughter carrying it anymore."

I wanted to believe him.

More than I cared to admit.

But the memory of the shotgun was still there.

And I knew I couldn't make a decision without facing it.

I looked at him.

"Then there's something you need to understand."

He nodded.

"I'm listening."

I took a slow breath.

"If I stay, it can't be because you're frightened today and grateful tomorrow."

He looked serious.

I continued.

"I won't spend my days waiting for you to become angry."

His face tightened.

"I know."

"And Molly must never be made to feel responsible for keeping peace between us."

He nodded.

"Agreed."

I studied him.

He didn't look away.

For the first time, I began to think he might understand what I was asking.

Not simply a place to cook.

Not simply a roof.

Respect.

Safety.

And a chance for Molly to be a child.

I looked toward the kitchen again.

Then back at him.

"I need time to decide."

He nodded.

"Take it."

He didn't argue.

He didn't demand gratitude.

He didn't remind me that he had given me shelter.

He simply accepted the answer.

That mattered.

More than he probably knew.

I went back to the kitchen.

Molly looked up immediately.

"Everything all right?"

I smiled.

"Yes, sweetheart."

She studied my face.

Then nodded.

I sat beside her.

My satchel remained near the cupboard.

The road still existed.

Nothing had been decided.

But for the first time in years, I wasn't thinking only about where I would go next.

I was thinking about what staying might mean.

And whether I could allow myself to want it.

Source: <a href="https://newsfeed.cafex.biz/blog/chapter-1-part-1-she-walked-into-a-strangers-kitchen-and-kept-stirring-with-a-shotgun-at-her-neck-029" rel="noopener nofollow"
