14 – The Little White Receiver Was Still Waiting in the Camper, and I Had to Learn That Listening Meant More Than Demanding Answers

I wanted to go back outside.

That was the truth.

Every time I looked toward the yard, I thought about the baby monitor.

A white receiver.

Silver duct tape.

A small green light.

The volume turned all the way down.

I had seen those details for only a few seconds.

But they stayed in my mind more clearly than almost anything else in the house.

I knew what a baby monitor was designed to do.

It carried sound.

One unit picked it up.

Another received it.

Simple.

I'd used things like that when Kaylee was little.

I understood the basic idea.

But I didn't understand why a receiver was taped to the wall of an old camper.

I didn't understand why Kaylee wanted me to see it.

And I didn't understand why the birthday gathering mattered.

Those were the questions I kept circling.

I knew I could walk outside and look.

The camper wasn't far away.

I could cross the yard in less than a minute.

The door was no longer fastened with the bungee cord.

I could step inside.

I could turn the little dial.

Maybe I'd hear something.

Maybe I'd understand.

But I had promised Kaylee I wouldn't.

And for once, I was trying to understand the difference between doing what I wanted and doing what she needed.

That wasn't easy for me.

I had spent years making decisions quickly.

On the road, you often had to.

Traffic changed.

Weather changed.

A load was delayed.

Somebody at a warehouse told you the paperwork wasn't ready.

You adjusted.

You chose another route.

You found a way to keep moving.

I was used to solving problems by acting.

The faster, the better.

But Kaylee hadn't asked me to solve the monitor.

She'd asked me to listen when she was ready.

That was a different kind of responsibility.

I stood beside the back door.

The yard looked gray in the winter light.

The camper was still at the far edge.

I remembered opening it the night before.

The bungee cord had been stretched across the outside of the door.

I had unhooked it.

Then I pulled the door open.

Kaylee flinched when the light reached her.

I couldn't stop remembering that movement.

The sudden raised arm.

The instinct to protect herself.

Then the recognition.

"Dad?"

I remembered how small her voice sounded.

I remembered kneeling on the cold floor.

I remembered touching her hands.

They were icy.

The heater sat nearby.

An orange extension cord ran toward the house.

I had followed it with my eyes and found the plug disconnected.

Those were facts.

I had seen them myself.

No one could talk me out of them.

I thought about Tara telling me that Kaylee had chosen the camper.

I remembered the irritation in her voice when I carried Kaylee inside.

She had seemed more concerned about her rules than my daughter's condition.

That was what I'd witnessed.

I couldn't claim to know every private conversation between Tara and Kaylee.

I couldn't claim to know everything Rick had done.

But I knew how they responded when I found her.

And those responses mattered.

I moved away from the door.

I didn't go outside.

Instead, I returned to the hallway.

The gym was still there.

I looked inside without entering.

I had started doing that whenever I passed.

It was almost a habit.

I would look at the treadmill.

Then the weight bench.

Then the mirror.

And each time, I would remember the bed that used to be there.

I wondered whether Kaylee had watched the furniture being moved.

I wondered where her bookshelf had gone.

I wondered whether she had been allowed to keep her things somewhere else.

I didn't know.

Those answers weren't in the source of what I'd witnessed that night.

They were things I still needed Kaylee to tell me.

I reminded myself not to fill the gaps with assumptions.

I had done that too often.

When Tara said Kaylee had an attitude, I assumed my daughter was being difficult.

When Kaylee stopped complaining, I assumed the problems had been resolved.

When Tara said she could handle the house, I assumed everything was being handled properly.

I had built an entire sense of security from assumptions.

And I had been wrong.

I thought about the forty dollars again.

Tara had mentioned it as though it settled every question.

Money missing from a purse.

A child accused of taking it.

A punishment.

But that explanation couldn't account for everything I'd seen.

It didn't explain why the heater was unplugged.

It didn't explain the bungee cord.

It didn't explain why Kaylee looked so thin.

It didn't explain why she was frightened of making things worse.

And it didn't explain the monitor.

I couldn't make all those details fit into Tara's simple story.

Not without ignoring what was right in front of me.

I went into the bedroom.

Kaylee was sitting up.

She looked toward me.

"You've been walking around."

I almost laughed.

"Have I?"

She nodded.

"I can hear your boots."

I looked down.

I'd worn those boots through long shifts.

Across loading docks.

Into truck stops.

Across parking lots in all kinds of weather.

I hadn't thought about the sound they made inside our house.

But Kaylee had noticed.

Of course she had.

She'd been listening to this house far more closely than I ever had.

I sat in the chair.

"Sorry. I'm restless."

She watched me.

"Because of the party?"

"Partly."

She looked down.

I didn't want her to feel responsible for my nerves.

So I added something.

"I'm also trying to understand a lot of things I should have noticed sooner."

She was quiet.

Then she said, "You didn't see it."

I nodded.

"No."

She looked at me.

"But you did when you got home."

That nearly broke me.

She said it so simply.

As though seeing what happened when I finally arrived was enough to make a difference.

I wanted to tell her I'd come home because I loved her.

That I'd driven all those hours because I didn't want to miss her birthday.

But those words would have sounded too much like an excuse.

So I said something smaller.

"I'm glad I came early."

She nodded.

"Me too."

We sat quietly.

I listened to the heating system.

I listened to distant movement in the house.

I could hear ordinary life continuing outside the bedroom.

And I realized how much sound had mattered in the story of the last five weeks.

Rick's loud music.

The phone calls.

The quiet answers.

The television playing when I arrived.

The wind around the camper.

The silent heater.

And now the baby monitor.

A device designed to carry sound from one place to another.

I couldn't know what it was meant to reveal.

But the thought stayed with me.

Maybe the problem wasn't that there had been nothing to hear.

Maybe the problem was that I hadn't been listening.

I looked at Kaylee.

She had turned sixteen that morning.

I had imagined this day for years.

I thought we'd talk about driving.

School.

Her plans.

The things sixteen-year-olds were supposed to be excited about.

Instead, she was resting in my bed because she had spent weeks outside in the cold.

That wasn't the birthday I wanted for her.

I felt ashamed.

But I couldn't let shame make me useless.

I needed to do something better with it.

I leaned forward.

"Kaylee, can I tell you something?"

She nodded.

"I know I haven't been home enough."

She didn't interrupt.

"I kept thinking that because I was working for you, I was doing what you needed."

I looked down at my hands.

"I didn't ask whether you needed something different."

She stayed quiet.

I continued.

"When you told me things were difficult, I should have listened."

Her eyes lowered.

"I tried."

"I know."

Those two words felt inadequate.

But they were true.

I did know.

I'd remembered the calls.

I'd remembered the complaints.

I had simply failed to understand what they meant.

I didn't want to defend myself.

So I stopped talking.

After a moment, Kaylee said, "I didn't want you to worry while you were driving."

I looked at her.

That was another thing I hadn't considered.

She knew I drove long distances.

She knew I was tired.

She knew my job could be dangerous.

And somehow, she had become responsible for protecting me from worry.

I had been the father.

She had been the child.

Yet she'd been managing my feelings while trying to survive her own situation.

That realization sat heavily with me.

"You don't have to protect me from the truth," I said.

She looked at me.

I added, "That's not your job."

She nodded slowly.

I didn't know whether she believed it yet.

I wouldn't have blamed her if she didn't.

Trust needed evidence.

Not just words.

And I had a long way to go.

I glanced toward the window.

The camper was out there.

The monitor was still on its wall.

The green light had been glowing when I found it.

I remembered Kaylee asking me not to touch it until the party.

I thought about asking her again.

But I didn't.

Instead, I said, "When you're ready, I'll hear whatever you need me to hear."

She nodded.

"Okay."

That was enough for the moment.

I let the silence settle.

I didn't try to fill it with promises.

I didn't ask whether she forgave me.

I didn't tell her everything would be fine.

I had learned how dangerous those words could become when they were used to end a conversation.

Everything had not been fine.

Not for weeks.

And pretending otherwise had helped nobody.

I stayed in the chair.

After a while, Kaylee rested her head against the pillow.

Her breathing slowed.

I watched her for a few minutes.

Then I looked at the clock.

The birthday gathering was drawing closer.

I still didn't understand the monitor.

I still didn't know what the other unit might be picking up.

I still didn't know why Kaylee wanted everyone present.

But I knew one thing.

I wasn't going to let my impatience take another choice away from her.

For once, the timing belonged to my daughter.

And I was going to respect it.

Source: shadowtnue.com

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: I Had Protected Every Dollar Her Mother Left Behind, Yet I Could Not Escape the Feeling That I Had Failed the Greater Promise

I wanted to go back outside.
