8 – As the Birthday Gathering Drew Near, I Looked at My Daughter, the Strawberry Cake, and the Promise That Would Decide Whether She Trusted Me Again

The hardest thing about that Thursday was doing nothing before Kaylee was ready.

Not because I didn't have things to do.

There were plenty.

I wanted to question Tara.

I wanted Rick out of my recliner.

I wanted my daughter's bedroom put back the way it belonged.

I wanted the heater connected.

I wanted every explanation I'd been missing for five weeks.

But every time I started toward one of those problems, I remembered Kaylee's face in the camper.

She'd asked me to wait.

Not forever.

Just until the birthday gathering.

And I had promised.

I wasn't going to break that promise simply because waiting made me uncomfortable.

I had spent years expecting my daughter to work around my schedule.

Now, for once, I could work around hers.

I stayed close to the bedroom.

Kaylee rested beneath the covers.

Sometimes she slept.

Sometimes she looked toward the window.

Sometimes she asked what time it was.

I answered.

I tried not to make every question feel important.

I didn't want her to think I was watching for signs of what she planned.

I wanted her to have a birthday morning that wasn't entirely about fear.

But that was difficult.

Everything in the house reminded me of what had happened.

The warm air.

The hallway.

The empty room.

The camper outside.

Even the cake.

I kept remembering the one I had carried into the house the night before.

A simple grocery-store cake.

Strawberry.

I'd imagined Kaylee laughing when she saw it.

I'd imagined her asking why I'd driven so far just to surprise her.

Now I understood how different the surprise had been.

She hadn't known I was coming.

Neither had Tara.

And that difference mattered.

If I'd arrived when everyone expected me, I might have seen a completely different house.

I might have walked into a birthday celebration where the rooms were clean and the adults were smiling.

I might have been told that Kaylee was being difficult.

I might even have believed it.

That thought frightened me.

Because I knew how easily I had believed those things before.

I thought about Tara's face when she saw me.

Her surprise.

The way she'd held me in the kitchen.

Her eyes moving toward the hallway.

At the time, I'd thought she was simply startled by my early arrival.

Now I wondered what had gone through her mind.

I didn't know.

I couldn't pretend I did.

But I remembered how quickly she'd begun explaining Kaylee's supposed behavior once I found the missing bedroom.

The accusation about forty dollars.

The claims about discipline.

The insistence that Kaylee had chosen the camper.

Those explanations had come easily.

Too easily.

I had accepted Tara's version of household problems for months.

But that night, the evidence had been right in front of me.

My daughter was cold.

Her room was gone.

The heater was unplugged.

Nothing Tara said could change those facts.

I walked into the kitchen.

Rick was nearby.

He glanced at me.

I thought about asking him what he knew.

I thought about the comment he'd made while lying in my recliner.

He'd laughed.

As though what happened to Kaylee was ordinary.

As though I was the foolish one for being upset.

I looked at him for a moment.

Then I turned away.

There would be time for that conversation.

Not before I heard Kaylee.

I opened the cake box and checked that it was still all right.

The frosting was a little smudged near one edge.

Nothing serious.

I could almost hear Amy telling me not to worry about a cake looking perfect.

Kaylee wouldn't care.

She'd want the strawberry flavor.

I closed the box again.

I remembered the first birthday after Amy died.

How difficult it had been to make the day feel normal.

I remembered trying to keep the traditions Amy had started.

A cake.

A meal together.

Something that made the day feel like it belonged to Kaylee.

I had promised myself then that I would always be present for the important moments.

And yet, as the years passed, work had taken more and more of them.

There was always a load.

Always a delivery.

Always somebody explaining why I was needed somewhere else.

I got good at apologizing.

Good at sending money.

Good at promising the next birthday would be different.

This time, I had actually made it home.

Three days earlier than expected.

I had done everything I could to arrive before the birthday.

And when I got here, I found out that being physically present for one day wasn't enough to undo what I'd missed.

I looked toward the hallway.

The bedroom door was partly open.

Kaylee was sitting up again.

I went in.

She looked at me.

"Is everything okay?"

I almost answered automatically.

The old words were right there.

Everything's fine.

The same words she had used with me.

I stopped myself.

"Not everything."

She watched me.

"But you're safe in here."

She nodded.

I sat beside the bed.

"Do you want some water?"

She said yes.

I brought it.

She drank slowly.

I noticed her hands were steadier now.

That relieved me.

But I knew she still looked too thin.

I knew the cold had taken something out of her.

And I knew she needed more than one warm night.

She lowered the glass.

"Are you mad at me?"

I stared at her.

"No."

She looked doubtful.

"About all of this?"

I leaned forward.

"Kaylee, listen to me."

She looked up.

"I'm upset that you were left out there."

She didn't say anything.

"I'm upset that I didn't know."

I took a breath.

"But I'm not upset with you."

She lowered her eyes.

I could tell she was trying to believe me.

I didn't push.

I had spent years expecting her to accept explanations from adults.

Now I wanted to give her something different.

Time.

A chance to decide whether my words matched what I did.

After a while, she asked, "Do you remember when we used to take the camper to Palo Duro?"

I nodded.

"Of course."

She looked toward the window.

"Mom always brought too many blankets."

I smiled despite myself.

"She did."

Kaylee looked at me.

"She said the nights got colder than you expected."

I remembered Amy saying that.

I remembered her pulling the quilt from the camper cupboard and insisting we use it.

I remembered teasing her for packing so much.

She'd been right.

She usually was about those things.

I looked at Kaylee.

"Your mom knew what she was doing."

A small smile touched her face.

Then it faded.

I didn't try to keep it there.

Grief doesn't work that way.

You don't get to hold a good memory in place just because you need it.

We sat quietly.

I thought about Amy's yellow legal pad.

The insurance money.

The trust.

The promise I'd made.

I had protected Kaylee's financial future.

But I hadn't protected her everyday life.

That was the part I couldn't stop thinking about.

The room she'd lost.

The nights she'd spent outside.

The calls where she'd told me she was fine.

I wanted to tell her everything would be different now.

I wanted to promise that I would never miss another sign.

But I'd made enough promises.

I needed to earn the right to make more.

Kaylee looked at the clock.

Then she asked, "Is the party still happening?"

I nodded.

"As far as I know."

She looked relieved.

I watched her face.

"That's important to you."

"Yes."

I didn't ask why again.

She'd already told me as much as she was ready to tell.

I just nodded.

"Then we'll keep things as they are."

She looked at me for a long moment.

"Thank you for waiting."

I reached for her hand.

She let me hold it.

Her fingers were warm.

I noticed that immediately.

Warm.

Such an ordinary thing.

I had never imagined I'd be grateful just to feel warmth in my daughter's hand.

But I was.

I sat with her until she grew tired again.

Then I went back into the hallway.

I looked toward her old bedroom.

The treadmill stood in the same place.

The weight bench.

The mirror.

The pale yellow walls.

I remembered painting them before she was born.

I remembered Amy choosing the color.

I remembered thinking about the daughter we were about to meet.

Sixteen years had passed.

And now that daughter was lying in my bed because someone had decided she didn't need her own.

I felt anger rise again.

I let it pass without acting on it.

Not because Tara deserved patience.

Not because Rick deserved another chance to explain himself.

Because Kaylee deserved to be heard.

That mattered more than how quickly I could express my anger.

I returned to the kitchen.

The strawberry cake waited on the counter.

Tara moved around the room, preparing for the birthday gathering.

Rick was still making himself comfortable in the house.

Everything looked almost normal.

That was the strange part.

A man could walk into our home and see a family preparing for a birthday.

He might see the cake.

The warm rooms.

The familiar furniture.

He might think everything was fine.

I had thought that for months.

I'd heard Kaylee say it over and over.

And I had been relieved.

I looked out through the back door.

The camper stood where it always had.

The orange extension cord was still lying across the grass.

Inside, the baby monitor remained taped beside the window.

I hadn't touched it.

I hadn't turned up the volume.

I hadn't tried to find out what it was receiving.

That was difficult.

I won't pretend otherwise.

I wanted answers.

I wanted them immediately.

But for the first time in a long while, I was letting my daughter decide when she was ready to speak.

And I was staying close enough to hear her.

I looked at the cake one more time.

Strawberry.

Her favorite since she was four.

I had remembered that small detail across hundreds of miles.

Now I needed to remember something bigger.

She was not a problem to be managed.

She was my daughter.

She was sixteen.

And she had spent five weeks believing she had to survive another two years before things could change.

I couldn't give those weeks back.

I couldn't pretend the night before hadn't happened.

And I couldn't undo the times she'd tried to tell me something was wrong.

But I could stay.

I could listen.

I could stop letting somebody else's confidence speak louder than my daughter's fear.

The gathering was getting closer.

Kaylee knew it.

So did I.

Whatever she wanted me to hear from that little white monitor, I would hear it.

And this time, I would not decide she was fine simply because that was the answer I wanted.

Source: <a
