7 – The White Monitor in the Camper Kept Drawing My Thoughts Back to One Question My Daughter Refused to Answer Before Her Birthday Gathering

By the time Kaylee woke again, I had walked past her bedroom several times.

I kept looking through the doorway.

Not because I expected anything to change.

Because I still couldn't believe it.

The treadmill stayed where her bed should have been.

The weight bench sat in the middle of the room.

The mirror reflected the pale yellow walls.

Every time I saw it, I remembered something else that used to belong there.

A book.

A pillow.

A piece of furniture.

Some ordinary object that had once made the room hers.

And every memory led back to the same question.

How had I let this happen?

I heard Kaylee moving in my bedroom.

I went in.

She was sitting against the pillows.

Her hair was loose around her face.

She looked tired, but more awake than she had earlier.

"Hey, birthday girl."

She smiled faintly.

"Hey."

I sat beside her.

"Feeling any better?"

She nodded.

"A little."

I was relieved to hear it.

But I didn't want to mistake a small improvement for everything being fine.

I'd done enough of that.

"Are you still cold?"

"Not like last night."

She looked down at her hands.

I noticed she rubbed them together.

Maybe it was habit.

Maybe she was still trying to warm them.

I didn't know.

I just knew I wanted to make sure she never had to sleep in that camper again.

I pulled the blanket a little higher over her legs.

She watched me.

Then she looked toward the window.

"Is it still cold outside?"

"Yes."

She nodded.

She didn't seem surprised.

Of course she wasn't.

She'd been living with that weather for weeks.

I sat quietly for a moment.

Then I asked the question I'd been holding back.

"Kaylee, can I ask you something?"

She glanced at me.

"About the monitor?"

I almost smiled.

She knew exactly where my mind had been.

"Yes."

She looked away.

I waited.

I didn't want her to feel trapped in another conversation where an adult demanded answers before she was ready.

Finally, she spoke.

"Can it wait?"

I nodded.

"It can."

She looked relieved.

I tried to make my voice gentle.

"I'm not going to take it apart or throw it away."

"I know."

"Whatever you need me to hear, I'll listen."

She nodded again.

I could see how much effort it took her to trust those words.

Then she asked me something.

"Did Tara say anything after you brought me in?"

I thought about the kitchen.

Her arms folded.

Her irritation.

The way she'd spoken about Amy.

I didn't want to lie.

But I didn't want to make Kaylee feel responsible for the argument.

"She wasn't pleased."

Kaylee looked down.

"I figured."

I leaned closer.

"That doesn't mean you did anything wrong."

She didn't answer.

I let the words sit.

She had heard enough from Tara.

I didn't need to turn the room into another place where someone explained her faults.

After a while, she said, "She thinks I took the money."

I looked at her.

"The forty dollars?"

She nodded.

I remembered Tara's accusation.

The way she'd said it so confidently.

As though the matter had already been settled.

I wanted to ask Kaylee whether she'd taken it.

But she looked exhausted.

And I wasn't willing to make that accusation the center of her birthday morning.

There was time to sort out the money.

There was no excuse for leaving her in the cold.

"Whatever happened with that money," I said, "it doesn't make the camper right."

She looked at me.

For the first time, her expression changed in a way I hadn't expected.

She seemed to be checking whether I meant it.

"Even if she's mad?"

"Even then."

Kaylee took a breath.

Then she leaned back.

I could see she was thinking.

I didn't push her.

I had learned something during the long night in the chair.

Silence wasn't always a problem to solve.

Sometimes it was the space a person needed before they could speak.

And my daughter hadn't been given much space.

I looked at the clock.

The day was moving forward.

Sooner or later, people would arrive for her birthday.

The house would fill with conversation.

The cake would come out.

And whatever Kaylee had been preparing would have its moment.

I didn't know whether I was ready.

But readiness wasn't the point.

Kaylee had asked me to be there.

So I would be there.

I went into the kitchen a little later.

Tara was moving around the counters.

She glanced at me.

"How is she?"

"Resting."

Tara nodded.

Then she said, "I hope she doesn't make today difficult."

I looked at her.

I had to remind myself not to answer immediately.

Anger would have been easy.

A shouting match would have been easy.

But Kaylee had made it clear she wanted the birthday gathering to happen.

I wasn't going to give Tara an excuse to cancel it.

"She's sixteen today," I said.

Tara looked toward the cake.

"I know how old she is."

I didn't answer.

I moved the cake box carefully.

The strawberry frosting was still visible through the plastic window.

I remembered buying it.

I remembered being pleased with myself for finding her favorite.

Now it seemed like such a small thing.

But it was still hers.

It was something Amy had known about her.

Something I'd remembered.

And I wanted her to have it.

I thought about the party.

People gathered around.

A birthday cake on the table.

Kaylee standing there, sixteen years old.

She should have been excited.

Instead, she had spent the night worrying about whether I would keep a promise.

I looked toward the hallway again.

Then I went outside.

I stopped on the porch.

The camper was quiet.

The orange cord still lay across the grass.

I could see the doorway from where I stood.

I thought about the white monitor taped inside.

The receiver.

The green light.

The volume turned down.

Those details kept returning to me.

I knew what a baby monitor was supposed to do.

It carried sound from one place to another.

That was its purpose.

Someone used one unit near the sound.

The other unit received it.

But why would Kaylee have a receiver in the camper?

Why would it be fastened to the wall?

And why would she point it out while asking me to wait until a party?

I could have gone over and examined it.

I could have turned the volume up.

I could have tried to work out what it was receiving.

My hand even rested on the porch railing while I considered it.

But I didn't move.

I had promised her.

And I was tired of acting as if my own urgency mattered more than hers.

I went back inside.

Rick was in the living room.

He looked comfortable.

Too comfortable.

I remembered him laughing the night before.

I remembered his comment about Kaylee having a mouth on her.

I wondered how many times he'd said things like that when I wasn't home.

I wondered whether he'd ever listened when she tried to explain herself.

But wondering wasn't knowing.

I was done making decisions based on what somebody else said.

I wanted facts.

I wanted Kaylee's account.

And I wanted to hear whatever the little monitor was meant to reveal.

I returned to the bedroom.

Kaylee was awake.

She looked at me as I entered.

"Did you go outside?"

"Just onto the porch."

She watched me carefully.

"Not to the camper?"

"No."

Her shoulders eased.

I sat down.

"You really want everything left alone until people arrive."

She nodded.

I looked at her for a moment.

"Then that's what we'll do."

She gave a faint smile.

"Thank you."

I wanted to tell her she shouldn't have to thank me for listening.

But I didn't.

Sometimes the best apology is simply doing the thing you should have done before.

I stayed beside her.

For a while, we didn't speak.

I listened to the sounds of the house.

The heating system.

A cabinet closing in the kitchen.

Footsteps down the hall.

Every ordinary noise reminded me that I'd spent years assuming this house was peaceful because nobody complained when I called.

I had never heard the silence the way Kaylee heard it.

I had never waited for Tara's mood to change.

I had never slept in the camper, wondering whether the heater would work.

I had never been asked to endure two more years before freedom.

Kaylee had.

I looked at her.

She was sixteen.

And she had already begun measuring her life in terms of how long she could survive until eighteen.

I couldn't accept that.

Not anymore.

But I also couldn't demand that she trust me instantly.

I'd spent too long giving her reasons not to.

So I sat.

I listened.

And I waited for the moment she had chosen.

Source: <a
