But protection that requires children to lie, hide pain, or fear telling their father the truth is not protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judge listened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I accept this sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was all.<\/p>\n<p>Deputies led her away.<\/p>\n<p>I sat still.<\/p>\n<p>Denise whispered, \u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Always the honest answer.<\/p>\n<p>That evening Noah cried when I told him Mom would be away for a while.<\/p>\n<p>Rick did not.<\/p>\n<p>Later I found him in bed holding Laura\u2019s letter from the supervised visit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWant to talk?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat anyway.<\/p>\n<p>After several minutes he asked, \u201cDoes jail mean she\u2019s bad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe talked about patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe also told the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat counts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He folded the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot enough to erase it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust counts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That seemed to satisfy him.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, while I was installing the new lift, Agent Park arrived.<\/p>\n<p>She rarely came without calling now.<\/p>\n<p>That made me nervous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She held an envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething ended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those words felt unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe state has reached resolution on the repair-bill civil issues and related claims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought that ended months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harlow Automotive\u2019s restructuring administrator had reviewed Laura\u2019s payment.<\/p>\n<p>The company had also reviewed Brent\u2019s defective-repair allegations.<\/p>\n<p>Independent inspection found my work met manufacturer standards.<\/p>\n<p>The forty-thousand-dollar claim had been formally withdrawn with prejudice.<\/p>\n<p>My seven-thousand-dollar invoice was confirmed paid in full.<\/p>\n<p>No lien.<\/p>\n<p>No outstanding dispute.<\/p>\n<p>Just paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the repair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the letter.<\/p>\n<p>A whole empire had opened after one invoice.<\/p>\n<p>Now the invoice itself closed with a page saying paid.<\/p>\n<p>Park smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes one part of the story gets to be boring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I liked that.<\/p>\n<p>I filed the letter in the same cabinet where I kept ordinary customer payments.<\/p>\n<p>Not framed.<\/p>\n<p>Not displayed.<\/p>\n<p>Just closed.<\/p>\n<p>But as Park turned to leave, she stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas and Margaret are both expected to enter final plea positions next week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrial?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnclear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLikely plea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSentencing. Restitution. Civil cases.
