11 – I Returned to the Question of the Flooded Cellar and Realized That Saving Dmitri’s Supplies Could Not Matter More Than Saving Our Children

The supplies were the first thing I thought about when the ground outside began to dry.

I had tried not to worry.

That had never been one of my strengths.

I knew exactly what was waiting below us.

Sacks of flour.

Jars of preserved vegetables.

Candles.

Blankets.

Tools.

Firewood.

Dmitri had gathered enough to help us survive for weeks.

I had seen the shelves with my own eyes.

Then I had heard water rushing into the cellar.

I kept imagining the sacks standing in muddy water.

The flour ruined.

The firewood soaked.

The blankets floating against the walls.

I did not know whether any of that had happened.

That was what made it difficult.

The uncertainty.

I looked toward the passage door.

It was closed.

Beyond it, the narrow route descended toward the underground shelter.

I had not opened it since we escaped.

The storm had passed, but that did not mean the passage was safe.

I knew the difference now.

I had learned it beneath the cedar.

The rain could stop while the ground remained dangerous.

Water could continue moving long after the sky cleared.

I stood near the door and listened.

The house was quiet.

I could hear the children behind me.

The baby made a small sound.

Anna was speaking softly to Luke.

Peter was moving something near the blankets.

Julia came toward me.

“Are you thinking about the cellar?”

“Yes.”

She looked at the door.

“Do you want to go down?”

I hesitated.

“I want to know what happened to the supplies.”

She nodded.

“Can I come?”

That was the answer I expected from her.

She had been beside me at the hidden hatch.

She had helped lift it.

She had carried the lantern through the flooding passage.

She had helped with the younger children.

And now she was ready to follow me back down.

I looked at her face.

She seemed so much older than she had before Dmitri died.

I hated that.

I wanted to give her a day when she did not have to be brave.

I shook my head.

“Not yet.”

She looked disappointed.

I understood why.

Doing something felt better than waiting.

I felt the same.

But fear was not always a reason to act.

Sometimes it was a reason to examine what we knew.

I opened Dmitri's notebook.

The map showed the cedar.

The marked circle.

The location where we had found the hatch.

The drawings explained parts of the house.

But I could not find anything that told me what condition the cellar might be in after a flood.

Dmitri had prepared the place.

That did not make it invulnerable.

I ran my finger over the map.

The spring lay uphill from the cedar.

The creek ran beside the hollow trunk.

The ground sloped downward toward the lower grove.

I thought about the storm.

How fast the water had risen.

How quickly it entered the cedar.

How it had begun trickling down the cellar steps.

I remembered waiting.

Hoping it would stop.

I had watched the water spread across the floor before accepting that we needed to leave.

I felt ashamed of that delay.

I knew I had been frightened.

I knew the weather had changed quickly.

But looking back, I could see how badly I had wanted to believe the cellar would remain safe.

I had nearly allowed that wish to make the decision for me.

I would not do it again.

I closed the notebook.

Julia was still waiting.

“We'll look when we can do it safely.”

She nodded.

I could tell she wanted a clearer answer.

So did I.

But there wasn't one.

I turned toward the unfinished house.

We still had work to do here.

Not construction work I could not yet manage.

Simple things.

Keeping the children away from open places.

Arranging our blankets.

Protecting the notebook and deed.

Making sure what little we had carried remained dry.

I began with those tasks.

Peter helped.

He moved carefully, keeping his wooden boat tucked away.

I noticed he was becoming particular about where he placed it.

It had become more than a toy.

It was a piece of his father he could hold.

I understood.

I felt the same way about the notebook.

Anna placed her music box in the safest spot we had chosen.

She checked it twice.

Luke kept his horse close.

He had begun treating the little carved animal as though it belonged wherever he went.

I did not tell him to put it down.

The baby slept.

Julia helped arrange the blankets.

I watched her work.

Then I stopped her.

“You can rest.”

She looked surprised.

“I'm not tired.”

I almost believed her.

Then I remembered the way she had leaned against me after reading Dmitri's letter.

“You can rest even when you aren't tired.”

She smiled faintly.

“That sounds like something Father would say.”

I thought about Dmitri.

He rarely followed that advice himself.

He worked until his hands were sore.

Then he worked again.

I wondered whether the unfinished house was evidence of love or of a man who had pushed himself too far.

Perhaps both.

I did not say that to Julia.

Some thoughts were too heavy to put into a child's hands.

I sat beside the baby.

The small knitted blanket covered the little body.

I touched its edge.

Dmitri had chosen that gift.

He had been thinking of warmth.

Comfort.

The needs of someone too young to understand what was happening.

I looked around at the unfinished room.

The roof above us had held through the storm.

The floor was dry where we had settled.

We were above the rushing water.

Those things mattered.

I kept returning to them whenever worry about the cellar took over.

Later, I went to the nearest window opening.

The creek was still visible below.

It had lost some of its violence.

But the water remained muddy.

Branches lay scattered near the cedar.

The fallen limb was enormous.

From the house, I could see how close it had landed to the hollow opening.

I felt cold.

If Luke had stayed there a little longer, everything might have been different.

I gripped the timber beside the opening.

I had been thinking about sacks of flour.

And there was the broken branch that reminded me how close I had come to losing my son.

I closed my eyes.

I could hear his voice again.

“Mother! There's water!”

I had run toward him.

I had taken his hand.

I had brought him back.

I wanted to remember that part.

Not only the danger.

The fact that I had reached him.

I opened my eyes.

Luke was sitting beside Anna.

He was moving his wooden horse along the floor.

He was alive.

That was enough to bring tears to my eyes.

I returned to the children.

Peter looked up.

“Can we get the food from downstairs?”

“Not yet.”

He frowned.

“Will it be ruined?”

“I don't know.”

He looked toward the passage door.

I could see that he was worried.

I sat beside him.

“Listen to me.”

He waited.

“We can lose supplies and still keep going.”

He looked at his boat.

I continued.

“But I can't replace any of you.”

His expression changed.

He looked down.

Then he nodded.

I did not know whether he fully understood.

Perhaps I was speaking to myself as much as to him.

I needed to hear it aloud.

Food mattered.

Shelter mattered.

The tools Dmitri had left mattered.

But the children mattered more than every object in that cellar.

I had almost forgotten that while worrying about the flood.

That admission hurt.

I had been so afraid of losing our last useful possessions that I had nearly convinced myself to risk going back too soon.

I looked at Julia.

She was listening.

I could see her thinking about the same decision.

“We'll check it,” I told them.

“When it's safe.”

Nobody argued.

I was grateful.

I was also aware that their trust placed another burden on me.

I could not simply say things and hope they worked out.

I had to make careful choices.

I turned back to the notebook.

Dmitri's plans were still there.

The measurements.

The drawings.

The map.

The iron key.

He had left a way from the cellar to higher ground.

That passage had saved us.

Whatever else happened, I could not forget it.

The cellar had been part of his protection.

Even when water entered, the second door had given us somewhere to go.

I wondered whether he had planned it for that reason.

I could not know.

But I was grateful he had made it possible.

I thought about the old farmhouse.

It had felt permanent because we had lived there so long.

The bank had proved otherwise.

The cedar had felt safe because its trunk was enormous.

The storm had proved otherwise.

The cellar had felt secure because it was built from stone and timber.

The flood had proved otherwise.

Now the unfinished house stood around us.

I wanted to trust it.

I needed to trust it enough to rest.

But I also needed to see it clearly.

I had begun to understand that safety was not something I could assume.

It was something I had to keep checking.

The children were quiet for a while.

Anna opened the music box.

The lullaby played softly.

I sat and listened.

Dmitri had chosen that tune because it comforted her.

I wondered whether he had realized it would comfort me too.

When it ended, Anna closed the lid.

Luke leaned against her.

Peter settled beside the blankets.

Julia sat near me.

The baby slept.

I looked at them.

Five children.

Five reasons to be careful.

Five reasons not to give up.

The cellar could wait.

The provisions might be damaged.

We would deal with that when we knew.

But I would not let fear of losing flour or firewood lead my children back into danger.

I reached for the deed.

I read my name again.

Maria.

The land remained ours.

The house remained standing.

Dmitri's notebook remained beside me.

And the children were safe.

For that day, I chose to protect what could not be replaced.

Source: <a href="https://news1.shoptonytv.net/thaoht/after-the-bank-took-ltn/" rel="noopener nofollow"
