9 – When Morning Reached the House Dmitri Had Hidden, I Saw How Much He Had Finished and How Much Was Still Missing

I woke because the rain had stopped.

For several moments, I lay still and listened.

No thunder.

No branches cracking.

No water rushing close enough to make me afraid.

Only the small sounds of my children sleeping around me.

I had not realized how much noise the storm had made until there was silence.

I opened my eyes.

The unfinished walls stood around us.

Pale daylight entered through the window openings.

The lantern had gone out.

And for one confused moment, I wondered why we were not in the farmhouse.

Then I remembered.

The bank.

The cedar.

The cellar.

The rising water.

Dmitri's iron key.

I closed my eyes again.

I was tired of remembering everything at once.

But the baby moved beneath the little knitted blanket, and I knew I could not remain where I was.

I sat up carefully.

My back hurt from sleeping on the floor.

My clothes felt stiff.

One of my hands was still resting near the notebook.

I had kept it close through the night.

I suppose I was afraid it might disappear.

That sounds foolish now.

But after losing so much, I had begun holding on to things as if they could be taken away merely because I stopped watching them.

I looked around.

Julia was sleeping near Anna.

Peter lay a little farther away, one hand close to the wooden boat.

Luke had fallen asleep holding his carved horse.

The baby was warm.

All five were there.

I counted them anyway.

I stood slowly and walked toward the nearest window opening.

The sky was gray, but the worst of the storm had passed.

Rainwater clung to the branches outside.

The ground was dark.

Broken twigs and leaves covered the slope.

I could see the cedar grove farther down.

The great tree stood among the others, though one side looked different.

Even from that distance, I could see where the enormous branch had fallen.

My throat tightened.

That tree had saved us for one night.

Then it had nearly killed us.

I thought about Luke standing beside the flooding creek.

I could still hear him calling for me.

I could still see the branch coming down.

I stepped away from the opening.

I did not want the children waking to find me crying.

Not again.

I turned toward the room.

In daylight, the house looked different.

The lantern had shown us only pieces of it.

A wall.

A corner.

A window.

Now I could see how those pieces belonged together.

Dmitri had not merely begun putting timber on the ground.

He had raised the structure of a house.

The rooms had recognizable shapes.

The openings had been measured.

The floor beneath us felt steady.

But there were unfinished places everywhere.

I noticed them more clearly now.

Areas that still needed proper closing.

Spaces that had not been fitted out.

Wood that had been placed but not finished.

I walked carefully through the room.

My fingers moved over one of the upright timbers.

The surface was rough in some places.

Smooth in others.

I could almost hear Dmitri telling me not to touch the unfinished edge.

He used to say that a splinter was a small injury until it happened to the person holding the wood.

I smiled.

Then I cried anyway.

Just a little.

I wiped my face quickly.

I had been doing that since the funeral.

Crying in small amounts.

Stopping before anyone noticed.

Then discovering later that grief had been waiting for me the entire time.

I looked toward the passage door.

It stood where we had entered.

I remembered pushing through it while water followed us from the cellar.

I had not wanted to look behind us.

Now I wondered what had happened below.

Had the water risen above the shelves?

Had it ruined the sacks of flour?

Had it reached the five wooden boxes before we moved them?

I thought of the careful rows of jars.

The candles.

The blankets.

The firewood.

Dmitri had prepared that place with such care.

I hated imagining it under muddy water.

But I knew I could not judge the damage from where I stood.

I would have to look when it was safe.

Not before.

That decision should have been easy.

It wasn't.

Everything we owned seemed to have become something I needed to protect.

And there was so little of it.

I went back toward the children.

Julia was awake.

She had been watching me.

“Is the storm over?”

“I think the worst has passed.”

She sat up and looked toward the windows.

“Can we see outside?”

“Not yet.”

Her expression changed.

I recognized the question before she asked it.

“Is something wrong?”

“No. I just want to make sure the ground is safe.”

She nodded.

Then she stood and came beside me.

We looked around the unfinished room together.

In daylight, the building seemed larger than it had during the storm.

Julia turned slowly.

“Father really made this?”

I looked at the timber.

“He certainly planned it.”

She touched the wall.

“Do you think he worked here alone?”

I thought about his long evenings.

The sawmill.

The wagon repairs.

The farm tools.

The exhaustion he brought home.

“I don't know.”

I could not imagine how he had managed so much without telling me.

Yet the evidence was all around us.

I remembered the note in the notebook.

He had wanted to surprise me.

I looked at the bare walls.

A surprise.

That word still hurt.

A surprise was supposed to make someone happy.

Not leave a widow standing in an unfinished house, trying to work out how it could become livable.

But I also understood something I had not understood before.

Dmitri had never planned for me to discover it this way.

At least, that was what his message suggested.

He had hoped to finish what he began.

He had hoped to solve the debts.

He had hoped to show me something wonderful.

Then he died.

And hope became work for the people left behind.

I touched the notebook.

Julia noticed.

“Are you going to read more?”

“Yes.”

“Can I help?”

I looked at her.

She was already standing straight, ready to be useful.

Her father's letter came back to me.

He had known this about her.

He had seen the same determination I was seeing.

“You can help me understand the drawings,” I said.

“But first, you need to eat something.”

She looked toward the others.

“Everyone does.”

I almost laughed.

Even when I told her to think of herself, she thought of the family.

We had brought little through the passage.

The larger supplies were still below.

I knew we would eventually need to return to the cellar.

But we had enough to get through the first morning without rushing back into danger.

I helped settle the baby.

Peter woke.

Then Anna.

Luke took longer.

He opened his eyes and looked immediately for the carved horse.

It was still in his hand.

I watched his fingers close around it.

“Did the tree fall?” he asked.

The question came before anything else.

I sat beside him.

“One large branch fell.”

He stared at me.

“The whole tree?”

“No.”

He looked relieved.

Then he frowned.

“Can we go back?”

I thought of the water running through the hollow trunk.

The broken branch.

The creek swollen by rain.

“We're staying away from it until I know it's safe.”

He looked around the unfinished house.

“Then we're here?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

That was enough for him.

For the moment.

I wished I could accept things as simply.

Peter stood near one of the walls.

He ran his hand over the timber.

“Father would know what goes here.”

I looked at the unfinished opening.

“Yes.”

He turned toward me.

“Do you?”

I wanted to say that I could work it out.

But I had not yet examined the plans properly.

“Not all of it.”

Peter nodded slowly.

Then he looked down at his wooden boat.

I wondered whether he was thinking about the way his father had shaped such a small thing.

The house seemed enormous beside it.

Yet both had begun with wood and careful hands.

Anna opened the music box.

The familiar lullaby filled the room.

Luke sat near her.

Julia folded the blankets.

I watched them for a moment.

Then I opened Dmitri's notebook.

The drawings had looked confusing in the cellar.

They looked less confusing here.

I found a page showing a wall with a window opening.

I stood beside the nearest wall and compared them.

The position seemed right.

I checked another drawing.

Then another.

Dmitri had measured the spaces with care.

The calculations were still difficult for me.

But I could recognize the shapes.

I began to understand why the notebook contained so many pages.

He had not drawn one hopeful picture and left it at that.

He had planned the work piece by piece.

I ran my finger along a list of lumber.

I remembered his pencil behind his ear.

The way he sometimes paused before cutting a board.

The way he checked a figure twice.

He used to say that wood could not be made longer once it was cut.

I had heard that so often I stopped listening.

Now I wished I had paid more attention.

I closed the notebook for a moment.

I looked around at the unfinished house.

I could no longer pretend the problem was simply finding shelter.

We had shelter.

We had land.

We had a legal deed.

But the house still needed work.

The cellar might be damaged.

The children needed food and rest.

And I was the only parent left to decide what came next.

I felt afraid.

There was no use pretending otherwise.

Then Julia came beside me.

She held out the carved jewelry box.

The letter was visible inside.

“I read it again,” she said.

I waited.

“He said I didn't have to do everything.”

I nodded.

“He was right.”

She looked around.

“But I can still help.”

I put my arm around her.

“Yes. You can.”

That was the difference I needed to learn.

Help was not the same as asking a child to become an adult.

And accepting help did not make me less of a mother.

I looked once more at the house.

I would need to learn what I could.

I would need to make careful decisions.

I would need to stop measuring myself against everything Dmitri might have known how to do.

He was gone.

I was here.

And five children depended on me.

I took the notebook back to the window.

Outside, the clouds had begun to thin.

The cedar grove stood below us.

The creek was still swollen.

I could see why the higher ground had mattered.

I wondered whether Dmitri had chosen this place because of its position above the spring.

Perhaps the land had told him where to build.

He had understood such things better than I did.

I touched the deed folded inside its envelope.

The county seal was still there.

My name was still there.

Forty-two acres.

The property had not vanished in the night.

I had spent so long expecting loss that even a legal fact needed to be checked more than once.

I looked at my children.

They were beginning to move around the room.

Not comfortably yet.

But without the terror of the night before.

I made a decision.

We would not rush back down the flooded passage.

We would look carefully at the house first.

We would learn what it could safely give us.

Then, when the ground allowed it, we would see what remained of the cellar.

I could not repair everything in one morning.

I could not undo Dmitri's silence.

I could not bring back our farmhouse.

But I could begin where we stood.

I put the notebook under my arm.

Then I turned to Julia.

“Come and look at these walls with me.”

She nodded.

And together we began examining the house her father had left unfinished.

Source: news1.shoptonytv.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Drawings in Dmitri’s Notebook Began to Match the Rooms Around Us, but Every Correct Measurement Reminded Me Why He Was Gone

I woke because the rain had stopped.
