7 – We Climbed Out of a Flooding Passage Into an Unfinished House, and I Recognized the Walls My Husband Had Drawn

I stood inside that unfinished house with the baby in my arms and did not know whether to be grateful or furious.

The children were safe.

For the moment, they were above the rising water.

That should have been enough.

But every wall around me raised another question.

How long had this place been here?

How much had Dmitri done without telling me?

And why had I discovered it only after losing him?

The passage door stood open behind us.

I could still hear water farther down the slope.

I moved away from it.

“Everyone, stay together.”

The children gathered near me.

Julia raised the lantern.

Its light moved across bare timber.

The walls were standing.

The window openings were there.

But the building was not finished.

There were places where work had clearly stopped.

I could see the shape of rooms, but they were not ready for a family to live in.

That was my first clear impression.

Not comfort.

Not beauty.

Work.

A great deal of work.

I took a few slow steps.

The floor was solid beneath my feet.

I looked upward.

The structure above us held steady while the storm continued outside.

I could hear rain striking the building.

The sound reminded me of nights in our farmhouse.

For a moment, I almost expected Dmitri to come through a doorway carrying a tool.

That was how familiar the unfinished wood felt.

He had lived among measurements and cut boards for years.

I had seen him build and repair things so often that I knew the signs of his work.

I recognized the care.

The straight edges.

The places where he had fitted pieces together.

I could not prove that every board had passed through his hands.

But I knew this was connected to his plans.

I knew it as surely as I knew his handwriting.

Julia moved beside me.

“Mother, is this a house?”

“Yes.”

“Whose house?”

I looked at her.

Then I looked toward the walls.

I had read the deed.

I knew the land belonged to me.

But I was still trying to understand what stood on it.

“I think your father meant it for us.”

She turned slowly.

I watched the words settle on her face.

“For us?”

“I think so.”

She looked toward Peter.

Then Anna.

Then Luke.

I saw the question forming in all of them.

Could we stay here?

Could this become a home?

I wanted to tell them yes.

I wanted to promise that we would never again have to sleep inside a hollow tree.

But I had made too many promises without knowing how to keep them.

So I said nothing.

I walked farther into the building.

The storm had darkened the window openings.

Outside, the trees moved under the wind.

Water was running down the slope below us.

The house stood on higher ground.

That much was clear.

The passage had brought us uphill, exactly as Dmitri's note had directed.

I thought about the spring.

The creek near the cedar.

The cellar beneath the ridge.

The narrow door.

The rising passage.

And this unfinished house.

They were all connected.

Dmitri had known where they led.

He had marked the land.

He had planned something around the spring and the higher ground.

I wished I could see the entire place in daylight.

But the storm had not passed.

I turned back toward the children.

Peter was looking at the bare walls.

Anna held her music box.

Luke stood close to her, his wooden horse still in his hand.

Julia kept the lantern steady.

The baby slept.

I was struck by how little we had carried through the passage.

A few blankets.

The small gifts.

The notebook.

The key.

The deed.

Those things had become our whole world.

Back at the farmhouse, I had worried about furniture and rooms.

Now I could not remember why so many things had once seemed necessary.

I needed safe walls.

A place to keep the children warm.

Food.

Water.

And a way to begin again.

I looked around.

The house was unfinished, but it was standing.

I could see that much.

There was no bank notice on its door.

No official paper ordering us to leave.

No stranger claiming it belonged to someone else.

I held the deed against my chest.

The land was in my name.

I had read the document myself.

It was not a gift someone could take away by changing their mind.

It was property Dmitri had finished paying for.

That thought steadied me.

I turned toward the passage door.

The water had not reached us.

I could still hear it below.

I wanted to close the door, but I hesitated.

We had come through it to escape.

I did not know whether it might be needed again.

So I examined the surrounding space.

The opening was solid.

The door fitted the frame.

Dmitri had made it possible to move between the cellar and this building without going outside.

I wondered why.

Had he been thinking about storms?

Had he wanted a concealed way to reach the supplies?

Or was the passage simply part of the larger plan?

I could not answer.

I was becoming used to that.

I had to learn to live with the difference between what I knew and what I guessed.

What I knew was simple.

The cedar had nearly become dangerous.

The cellar had begun flooding.

The iron key had opened a passage.

The passage had brought my children uphill.

And now we were inside a house.

Everything beyond that remained uncertain.

I looked at the notebook.

The drawings were still folded between its pages.

I wanted to open it immediately.

But the children needed somewhere to settle.

I moved us toward the driest, most protected part of the unfinished space.

We arranged the blankets.

Peter helped.

Julia checked on the baby.

Anna sat with Luke.

I tried to make the place feel less strange.

But I could not hide the bare timber.

I could not hide the unfinished openings.

And I could not hide the fact that I was still looking around as though I expected the building to vanish.

Peter finally spoke.

“Did Father build this?”

I looked toward the nearest wall.

“I believe he was working on it.”

Peter nodded.

He studied the boards.

Then he looked down at the little wooden boat in his hand.

I wondered whether he was thinking of the same thing I was.

The boat had been carefully finished.

Every edge smoothed.

Every detail considered.

The house was different.

It had not reached that stage.

Dmitri had died before telling us about it.

And whatever he had intended, there was still work to be done.

I felt the loss of him sharply.

Not only because he was my husband.

Because he was the person who would have known how to finish these walls.

He would have understood every measurement.

He would have known which pieces were missing.

He would have looked at the unfinished structure and seen the completed house.

I saw uncertainty.

I saw timber.

I saw places where rain might enter if the weather turned.

I saw work I did not know how to do.

I sat down.

For a moment, I felt smaller than I had inside the cedar.

That surprised me.

The cedar had offered almost nothing.

This place offered the shape of a future.

But a future could be frightening when you did not know how to reach it.

Julia came and sat beside me.

She looked around without speaking.

Then she touched the carved jewelry box.

I knew she was thinking about her letter.

Her father had told her not to carry everyone's burdens.

I wondered whether he had understood how much he was leaving for her to help carry.

For all of us.

I put my hand over hers.

“We're safe for now.”

She nodded.

Then she looked at the notebook.

“Are those the drawings?”

I followed her gaze.

“Yes.”

“Could they be for this house?”

I looked around again.

The thought had been growing in me since we opened the passage door.

I had not yet allowed myself to say it aloud.

“I think they are.”

She reached for the lantern.

“Then we should look.”

I smiled despite everything.

She sounded so much like Dmitri.

Practical.

Quiet.

Already thinking about what could be understood and done.

I opened the notebook.

The first drawings seemed different now.

Before, I had seen lines on paper.

Now I had walls around me.

I turned a page and held the drawing toward the nearest corner.

The proportions looked familiar.

I moved the lantern.

I checked the position of a window opening.

Then another.

I was not certain.

But I could begin to see what Dmitri had seen.

The drawings belonged to a building.

And the building stood around us.

I turned another page.

Lists of lumber.

Measurements.

Calculations.

I remembered how carefully Dmitri had written them.

He had not been making idle sketches.

He had been planning the work.

I touched one of the marks with my finger.

A little line beside a number.

A correction.

He must have checked something and changed it.

I could picture him doing that.

I could picture his concentration.

The way he would pause, measure again, then nod when the figures made sense.

I missed him so much that I had to close my eyes.

For a moment, the storm seemed very far away.

I was standing in a house he had imagined.

A house he had begun.

A house he had never brought me to see.

I wanted to thank him.

I wanted to ask why he had left me with such a difficult secret.

I wanted one more ordinary evening with him.

One more chance to say that I would rather face fear together than be protected by silence.

But there was no answer.

Only the notebook.

And the unfinished walls.

I opened my eyes.

The children were settling down.

The baby was warm.

The rain continued outside.

I looked at the drawings again.

I did not know how to build a house.

I did not know what the next day would require.

But I knew the plans were not meaningless.

Dmitri had left them for me to find.

Perhaps he had believed I would understand them.

Perhaps he had hoped I would find someone who could.

Or perhaps he had simply wanted to show me what he had tried to make.

I could not know.

I placed the notebook beside the deed.

Then I looked around the unfinished house.

For the first time since the bank took the farmhouse, I was not searching for somewhere to hide.

I was looking at somewhere we might belong.

That difference frightened me.

It also gave me hope.

Source: <a
