6 – When Floodwater Reached the Cellar Floor, I Used Dmitri’s Iron Key and Found the Passage He Had Left Behind

The first thing I did was put my foot into the water.

It barely covered the bottom of my shoe.

I remember feeling relieved.

Then ashamed.

I had just watched a creek turn into a torrent.

I had seen a massive branch fall beside my children.

And still I wanted to believe a little water could not hurt us.

I looked toward the stairs.

More water was coming.

A narrow stream had become several.

It ran down the wooden steps, gathered at the bottom, and spread over the cellar floor.

The children were watching.

I knew I had to move before the situation became worse.

“Peter, keep the blankets off the floor.”

He reached for them immediately.

“Anna, stay with Luke.”

She took his hand.

Julia stood beside the lantern.

“What should I do?”

“Help me look.”

I had no better instructions.

I moved toward the shelves.

The flour sacks were still dry.

The jars were still safe.

The firewood lay above the water.

Dmitri had prepared this cellar with care.

But if the water kept rising, the things he had stored would no longer matter.

I touched the stone wall.

Cold.

Solid.

For one moment, I tried to tell myself the water might stop.

Then I heard another trickle behind me.

I turned.

A thin stream had reached the area near the five small boxes.

Luke stepped backward.

His carved horse was clutched in one hand.

“Is the water going to come up here?”

“I don't know yet.”

I hated saying it.

But I had promised myself I would not lie to the children just to make my own fear easier.

I lifted the boxes onto a higher shelf.

Julia helped.

She moved her jewelry box first.

Peter carried his boat and knife.

Anna held the music box close.

I kept the baby's knitted blanket around the little one.

Those gifts were small.

The cellar contained far more useful things.

Yet I could not bear the thought of losing them.

They were what remained of Dmitri's hands.

I had already buried their father.

I would not let the water carry away what he had left them if I could prevent it.

Julia looked toward the stairs.

“Can we go outside?”

I listened to the storm.

The rain was still heavy.

The branch had fallen beside the cedar.

The ground above us was soaked.

I could not know whether other branches were ready to break.

And the creek had risen so quickly that the way back toward the tree might already be dangerous.

“No,” I said.

“Not that way.”

The words seemed to close the only entrance we knew.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then I looked at the notebook.

It rested where I had left it near the sixth box.

I went to it.

My hands were damp.

I dried them against my clothing before touching the pages.

Dmitri had written that I should follow the spring toward the higher ground.

The instruction had seemed like an invitation before the storm.

Now it sounded like something I needed to understand immediately.

I studied the key.

Iron.

Heavy.

Plain.

There was nothing decorative about it.

Dmitri would have approved of that.

He had never cared much for things that looked important but served no purpose.

I wrapped my fingers around it.

Then I looked toward the back of the cellar.

The narrow wooden door was still there.

I had mistaken it for a cupboard because of its size.

It stood against the rear wall, partly surrounded by stored supplies.

There was a lock.

I had not noticed that before.

Or perhaps I had seen it and failed to understand what it meant.

I walked toward it.

Julia followed with the lantern.

“Mother?”

“Bring the light closer.”

She lifted it.

I examined the lock.

My heart began to pound.

The shape of the opening looked right.

I brought the key toward it.

For one moment, I hesitated.

I remembered the bank.

The documents.

The humiliation of discovering how much Dmitri had kept from me.

I remembered opening the notebook and realizing that my husband had planned something without telling me.

I had wanted the truth.

Now I was standing in front of another locked door.

I was afraid of what might be behind it.

But the water was moving across the cellar floor.

There was no time to be angry.

I pushed the key into the lock.

It fitted.

I turned it.

The mechanism moved.

A small sound.

Ordinary.

Almost nothing.

Yet I felt as though the entire cellar had changed.

I looked at Julia.

She was staring at the door.

“It's the right key.”

“Yes.”

I gripped the handle.

Then I pulled.

The door opened.

There was no cupboard behind it.

No shelves.

No little storage space.

A passage led away from the cellar.

It rose into darkness.

I lifted the lantern.

The walls were close together.

The way ahead was narrow, but it was open.

I could not see where it ended.

Then I felt something on my face.

Air.

Fresh air.

Not the still air of the cellar.

Something was moving through the passage from another opening.

I stood very still.

Dmitri had built or discovered a way out.

He had known there was another place beyond this room.

And he had left me the key.

I wanted to laugh.

I wanted to cry.

I wanted to shout at him for making me find it only when water was reaching my children's feet.

Instead, I turned around.

“Everyone, come here.”

Peter brought the blankets.

Anna held Luke's hand.

Julia kept the lantern raised.

I adjusted the baby against me.

The children gathered at the doorway.

Luke peered into the darkness.

“Where does it go?”

“I think it leads uphill.”

“How do you know?”

I glanced at the notebook.

“Your father left a direction.”

It was not a complete answer.

But it was the first time since the storm began that I had somewhere definite to lead them.

I stepped through.

The passage was narrow enough that we could not walk side by side.

I went first.

Julia carried the lantern close behind me.

Peter followed with what we could manage.

Anna stayed beside Luke as much as the space allowed.

I kept stopping to make sure nobody had fallen behind.

I knew we should move quickly.

But I also knew a stumble in the dark could hurt one of the children.

The passage rose gradually.

I could feel the incline beneath my feet.

Dmitri's note had said to follow the spring uphill.

I had imagined walking outside along the water.

I had not imagined moving through the earth.

The lantern light reached only a short distance ahead.

Beyond it was darkness.

I tried not to think about the weight of the ground above us.

I tried not to think about the water gathering in the cellar behind us.

Then I heard it.

A rushing sound.

Farther back.

Water was entering the passage.

I stopped and listened.

The sound seemed to grow louder.

Julia noticed my expression.

“What's wrong?”

“We need to keep moving.”

She looked behind her.

“Is it the water?”

“Yes.”

I did not soften the answer.

There was no reason to pretend.

We all heard it now.

A steady movement behind us.

The storm was pushing water through the cellar.

And the cellar was connected to the passage we had entered.

I imagined the stairs filling.

The floor disappearing.

The stored supplies standing in muddy water.

I felt sick.

Dmitri had spent years preparing that hidden room.

I had found it only hours earlier.

Now it might be ruined.

But the children were alive.

That was what mattered.

I forced myself to look forward.

“Keep going.”

We moved uphill.

Luke stumbled once.

Anna caught his hand.

He made a small sound but kept walking.

Peter shifted the blankets against his shoulder.

Julia held the lantern steady.

I was proud of them.

I was also frightened by how much they had learned to endure without complaining.

They should have been sleeping in the farmhouse.

They should have been arguing over ordinary things.

Instead, they were climbing through a dark passage while floodwater followed.

I wanted to apologize.

I did not.

An apology would not help them move.

I kept my voice calm.

“Just a little farther.”

I did not know whether it was true.

I had never walked that passage before.

I had no idea how far it ran.

But the air was changing.

It was fresher.

Cooler.

The ground beneath us was still rising.

I took that as a good sign.

I remembered Dmitri working with a measuring line.

The patient way he checked distances.

The care he took before cutting timber.

The sketches in his notebook.

Walls.

Windows.

Lumber.

Numbers.

I had thought they were plans for something he hoped to build.

Now I wondered whether they were connected to the passage.

He had measured something.

Something larger than the cellar.

I held that thought while we climbed.

The sound of water remained behind us.

It had not reached our feet yet.

Still, I could not make myself slow down.

The baby stirred.

I adjusted the little knitted blanket.

I could feel the child's warmth through it.

That tiny comfort kept me from panicking.

I was still carrying my youngest.

The others were still following.

We were moving toward higher ground.

I had to trust that was enough.

Then the passage changed.

The walls seemed to open slightly.

The incline became less steep.

I lifted my hand and touched wood.

Not stone.

A flat surface stood in front of me.

I raised the lantern.

Another door.

I nearly laughed from relief.

There was somewhere for the passage to lead.

The way did not simply disappear into earth.

I placed my hand against the door.

It felt solid.

I searched for a handle.

There was one.

I tried it.

The door resisted for a moment.

My chest tightened.

Behind us, the sound of rushing water continued.

I tried again.

Nothing.

Julia moved closer.

“Can I help?”

“Yes.”

She shifted the lantern.

I put my shoulder against the wood.

It gave slightly.

I felt movement.

A small amount at first.

Then more.

I pushed again.

The door swung inward.

Fresh air reached us.

Not a violent gust.

Just the smell of a larger space beyond.

I lifted the lantern through the opening.

And stopped.

There was a floor.

There were walls.

There were window openings.

The space was unfinished, but it was unmistakable.

A house.

I could not speak.

I had followed a locked passage because water was rising behind us.

I had expected another shelter.

Perhaps a way onto the hillside.

Instead, I was standing at the entrance to a building.

A building Dmitri had never shown me.

I looked back at my children.

They were crowded in the passage, waiting for me to move.

I stepped aside.

“Come in.”

One by one, they crossed the threshold.

I counted them again.

Five.

All five.

Then I looked around at the unfinished walls.

I thought of the drawings in Dmitri's notebook.

And for the first time, I understood that the cellar had not been the end of his secret.

It had only been the beginning.

Source:
