There's water!”

His voice came from the direction of the cedar.

For one terrible moment, I could not see him.

I called his name.

He appeared near the opening of the hollow trunk, looking toward the creek.

The little stream beside the cedar had swollen.

It was no longer clear water moving quietly over stones.

It had become brown and fast.

Leaves and broken twigs rushed along its surface.

I could hear it above the rain.

That frightened me.

I had seen the creek before.

I had never heard it sound like that.

“Luke, come here!”

He turned toward me.

I hurried across the wet ground.

The rain struck my face so hard that I could barely keep my eyes open.

I reached him and took his hand.

He pointed toward the tree.

“It's coming inside.”

Water was running through the opening of the hollow cedar.

The ground where we had slept was already wet.

Our poor shelter was filling with rainwater.

I felt a sharp pain in my chest.

Only hours earlier, I had thought that tree was the one place nobody could take from us.

Now nature was taking it away.

I looked at the cedar's thick branches.

They were moving more violently than before.

The wind made a low sound through the grove.

I had never been so afraid of a tree.

“Leave it,” I told Luke.

“But our things—”

“We're going to the cellar.”

I took him toward the hatch.

Peter was already near the opening, looking out at us.

I called to him.

“Take the baby's blankets and get below.”

He moved immediately.

Julia had brought the lantern to the staircase.

Anna stood beside her.

The baby was wrapped securely.

I counted them without meaning to.

Julia.

Peter.

Anna.

Luke.

The baby.

Five.

I took a breath.

“Everyone downstairs. Now.”

Nobody argued.

Peter carried the blankets.

Julia held the lantern high enough to light the steps.

Anna took Luke's hand.

I kept the baby close and followed.

The rain was so loud that I could barely hear our footsteps.

I remember the smell of wet earth.

The way the wooden steps felt beneath my feet.

The narrow opening above us.

And then a sound that seemed to come from everywhere at once.

A violent crack.

Not thunder.

Wood.

Something enormous was breaking.

I turned my head toward the opening.

The cedar shuddered.

A huge branch came down through the rain.

It struck the ground near the hollow trunk with a force I felt even from the staircase.

I froze.

That branch landed where the children had been standing only moments earlier.

I knew it immediately.

I could see the broken wood through the rain.

I could see the place beside the tree.

And I could imagine Luke still standing there, staring at the flooding creek.

My legs nearly gave way.

“Mother!”

Julia's voice reached me from below.

I looked down.

All five children were inside.

I could see them.

I had to remind myself of that.

They were alive.

They were beneath the ground.

They were waiting for me.

I pulled the hatch closed.

The sound changed at once.

The worst of the rain became muffled.

The cellar seemed smaller without daylight entering through the opening.

I descended the stairs slowly.

Julia was holding the lantern.

Her face had gone pale.

“Was that the cedar?”

I nodded.

She looked toward the ceiling.

“Did it fall?”

“Part of it.”

Nobody spoke.

Luke held his carved horse against his chest.

Peter moved closer to Anna.

The baby stirred.

I sat down because I was afraid my knees would not hold me.

I had nearly lost one of my children.

Perhaps more than one.

And I had not realized how close we were to danger until the branch had already fallen.

I tried to steady my breathing.

I looked at Dmitri's supplies.

The sacks of flour stood undisturbed.

The shelves were still upright.

The candles waited in their places.

The cellar had protected us.

For the moment.

I thought of the wooden hatch above our heads.

The water running across the slope.

The rain pouring through the cedar.

I wondered whether the underground room could withstand a storm like this.

Dmitri had been careful with wood.

He had understood stone.

But he had not been able to control the weather.

Nobody could.

Julia sat beside me.

“Mother, are we staying here?”

I looked around.

The cellar was dry.

Its walls were solid.

I wanted to tell her yes.

I wanted to say the danger had passed.

Instead, I answered with the truth.

“We'll stay here while it's safer than outside.”

She nodded.

I could see that she was frightened.

I reached for her hand.

“You don't have to pretend.”

Her eyes filled immediately.

I knew why.

Her father's letter.

He had told her that strength did not mean carrying every burden alone.

And already she was trying to do exactly that.

She moved closer.

For a little while, I held her.

The younger children sat near us.

Peter kept looking toward the stairs.

Anna opened her music box once, then closed it before the tune had finished.

Luke placed his wooden horse on his knee.

He watched it as though the small animal might give him an answer.

The baby settled again.

Above us, the storm continued.

There were heavy impacts somewhere beyond the hatch.

Branches.

Rain.

Perhaps stones moving in the water.

I could not tell.

Every unfamiliar sound made me tense.

I had lived with the fear of losing our farmhouse for longer than I wanted to admit.

I had imagined papers, officials, and debts.

I had not imagined hiding beneath a ridge while a storm tore apart the tree that had sheltered my children.

I thought of Dmitri's notebook.

It was resting near the sixth box.

I reached for it.

The pages had seemed mysterious before.

Now they seemed urgent.

The drawings showed walls and windows.

The map had led us to the cellar.

The key was supposed to take me toward the spring.

I wondered whether Dmitri had expected us to find something beyond this room.

I opened the notebook again.

I studied the sketches.

There were measurements I still did not understand.

Lengths of lumber.

Positions of openings.

Careful calculations.

Nothing explained what to do during a storm.

I shut the book.

I hated that.

I wanted directions.

I wanted someone to say where to go next.

Dmitri had left me clues.

But clues were not the same as having a husband beside you.

I looked toward the back of the cellar.

Shelves covered one wall.

Firewood was stacked nearby.

There were tools and blankets.

A narrow wooden door stood beyond them.

I had noticed it earlier.

I had assumed it opened into another cupboard.

I was too tired to investigate.

I turned away.

The storm had already been raging for what felt like a very long time.

I could not measure it properly.

The cellar had no view of the sky.

The lantern light remained the same.

Eventually, I heard Anna ask whether the rain was getting quieter.

I listened.

“I think so.”

But there was another sound.

At first, I mistook it for the rain overhead.

Then I heard it again.

Closer.

A gentle trickling.

I stood.

Julia looked up.

“What is it?”

I held up my hand.

The children fell silent.

There it was.

Water.

Not outside the cellar.

Inside.

I lifted the lantern and moved toward the stairs.

A thin stream was running down the steps.

It reached the floor and spread into a shallow puddle.

I watched it for several seconds.

Then another trickle joined it.

My stomach tightened.

The hatch was not keeping the rain out.

The storm had found its way into the one place I had believed might protect us.

I looked at the children.

They were watching me.

I had to make a decision.

And somewhere in the back of my mind, Dmitri's final instruction returned.

The spring.

The higher ground.

The iron key.

I turned toward the narrow wooden door at the back of the cellar.

For the first time, I wondered whether it was a cupboard at all.

Source: <a href="https://news1.shoptonytv.net/thaoht/after-the-bank-took-ltn/" rel="noopener nofollow"
