yet.”

He nodded.

The next morning Mercer was scheduled to give a formal grand-jury statement.

Before leaving, he stopped at the garage.

“I remembered something else about your Lexus file.”

“What?”

“Thomas wasn’t the first person to ask that it be removed.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who was?”

“Brent.”

“That doesn’t surprise me.”

“It should.”

“Why?”

Mercer looked toward the office.

“Because Brent was not working in dealership operations at the time.”

I frowned.

He had been involved mostly in sales expansion and marketing.

“So how did he know about one mechanic’s flood note?”

“Someone told him.”

“Who?”

Mercer shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“Thomas?”

“No. The request reached Thomas after Brent raised it.”

I felt something shift.

If Brent knew about the Lexus note before Thomas did, someone close to the service department had warned him.

Larry?

Maybe.

But why route it through Brent?

Mercer continued.

“There was a phrase in an email.”

“What phrase?”

“He wrote, ‘Laura says Craig won’t let it go.’”

Everything inside me stopped.

Laura.

Again.

But this was before she left.

Before I knew about Brent.

Before I was fired.

“What wouldn’t I let go?”

“The flood damage.”

I remembered coming home after that repair.

Complaining at dinner.

Telling Laura the dealership was doing something weird with a Lexus.

She had listened.

I had thought it was meaningless work talk.

Then she told Brent.

Whatever their relationship was at that point, it was already intimate enough that my private frustration reached him.

The first thread that led to my firing had not started in a boardroom.

It had started at my own kitchen table.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: Laura Finally Admitted When Her Relationship With Brent Began, and the Date
