identified.

So had Brent’s.

The conversation concerned Samuel Voss.

The accountant.

Voss had discovered financial irregularities and threatened to report question investigators are asking.”

“Did they threaten him?”

“Not explicitly in the portion we recovered.”

“What did Thomas say?”

Park consulted notes.

“He said Voss needed to understand that loyalty had consequences in both directions.”

“That sounds like a threat.”

“It may.”

“What did Brent say?”

“He proposed paying Voss twenty thousand dollars for documents and silence.”

The amount from the ditch.

“Then the envelope was for Voss.”

“That is our current assessment.”

“And the key?”

“Voss had apparently demanded records.”

“But Laura threw it away.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Ramirez.

“The crash interrupted the payoff.”

“Yes.”

“And that’s why Thomas panicked.”

“Yes.”

“Because the cash and key linked everything.”

“Yes.”

Park tapped the evidence bag.

“The second drive was likely copied by Brent before the meeting.”

“So he hid it in the Mercedes.”

“Apparently.”

“Why?”

“We believe Brent did not fully trust his father.”

That made sense immediately.

Family built on money rarely meant family built on trust.

“What did he plan to do with it?”

“Protection. We don’t know.”

I almost smiled at the familiar phrase.

Then Park’s expression changed.

“There’s another recording.”

The room became still.

“What?”

“This one is from the night of the crash.”

I stopped breathing.

“How?”

“The drive appears configured to synchronize audio files copied from Brent’s phone.”

“So his phone was recording?”

“Possibly intentionally. Possibly through an app.”

“What does it capture?”

“Approximately eleven minutes.”

Denise leaned forward.

“Before or after the crash?”

“Both.”

Every muscle in my body tightened.

Park explained.

The recording began while the Mercedes was stopped at the marina road.

Thomas arrived.

Their voices matched Rick’s memory.

Laura said no.

Thomas raised his voice.

Brent demanded the package.

Then Thomas said the sentence Rick partially remembered.

Not exactly the same words, but close enough.

Craig could never know what had happened.

I stared at the table.

“Why me?”

Park played no audio but read from a transcript.

Thomas believed I still had contacts at the dealership from my years as a mechanic.

More importantly, he knew I documented vehicle repairs carefully.

He feared that if Brent crashed the Mercedes carrying dealership evidence and I later serviced it, I might find something.

The irony almost made me dizzy.

They had feared me before I knew there was anything to find.

“Why bring the car to my shop then?”

I asked.

Ramirez answered.

“That was Laura’s decision, not Thomas’s.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Thomas wanted the Mercedes destroyed.”

The room went silent around me.

“Destroyed how?”

“Disposed of through one of their salvage channels.”

“But Laura brought it to me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ramirez’s eyes stayed on mine.

“According to Laura, she believed you were the only mechanic she could pressure into repairing it without asking enough questions.”

The truth hurt even after everything.

She had not trusted me.

She had trusted my fear.

“But Thomas didn’t know?”

“Not initially.”

“When did he find out?”

“After you started the repair.”

“From Laura?”

“Probably.”

I thought about the break-in.

Derek.

The threats.

Corporate attorneys.

The pieces fit tighter.

“What does the recording say after Thomas leaves?”

Park continued.

Laura and Brent argued.

She opened the envelope.

She discovered the cash and key.

She accused Brent of involving the children.

Brent told her to mind her own business.

She threatened to throw the package out.

He demanded she hand it over.

Then he took the driver’s seat.

The Mercedes accelerated.

The audio captured Rick crying.

Noah asking them to stop yelling.

I covered my face with one hand.

Denise touched my arm.

Park paused.

“You don’t need the rest.”

“Yes.”

I lowered my hand.

“I do.”

She continued quietly.

Thirty seconds before impact, Laura shouted at Brent to slow down.

He told her to give him the envelope.

She refused.

There was movement.

A horn.

Laura shouted his name.

Then impact.

Metal.

Glass.

Noah screaming.

Nothing in my life had prepared me to hear someone describe the sound of my child screaming after a crash.

I stared at the wall until Park finished.

The recording continued.

Brent cursed.

Laura asked the boys if they were alive.

Rick answered.

Noah cried.

Laura said his mouth was bleeding.

Then Brent said they had to leave.

Laura told him they needed an ambulance.

For one brief second, hope twisted through me.

She had said it.

She knew.

Then Thomas’s voice came through Brent’s phone.

He had called.

Brent told him they crashed.

Thomas asked whether police were there.

Brent said no.

Thomas gave the instruction that changed everything.

Leave.

No ambulance.

No report.

Get the car home.

“What did Laura say?” I whispered.

Park looked at the transcript.

“She said, ‘Noah is bleeding.’”

“And Thomas?”

“He said, ‘Then stop the bleeding.’”

The room became very quiet.

“What happened next?”

“Laura got out.”

“She threw the envelope.”

“Yes.”

“Then?”

“She returned to the Mercedes.”

“And they left.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Ramirez.

“Does this mean Thomas told them to abandon the scene?”

“It is strong evidence he instructed them to avoid reporting the collision.”

“Does it mean he knew children were injured?”

“He heard Laura say Noah was bleeding.”

My hands shook.

I placed them under the table.

“Is he being arrested?”

Park and Ramirez exchanged a glance.

That was enough.

“When?”

Ramirez answered.

“Today.”

I looked toward the window.

Across the street, traffic moved normally.

People carried coffee.

A delivery truck stopped at the federal custody on unrelated financial charges.”

“Laura?”

“Local charges are being prepared.”

My chest tightened.

“What charges?”

Ramirez listed them carefully.

Child endangerment.

Evidence tampering.

Obstruction.

Potential conspiracy related to the crash concealment.

Others remained under review.

I closed my eyes.

My sons’ mother.

I had known this moment might come.

Knowing did nothing to make it waited.

“But Brent ordered him to enter the garage.”

That mattered.

Not because it cleared Laura.

It didn’t.

But because truth mattered even when the truth was complicated.

“What did Derek think he was retrieving?”

“The diagnostic computer and any paperwork showing police had received vehicle
