I searched the next day, but there was rain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It had rained hard the morning after September seventh.<\/p>\n<p>If Laura had thrown the package into the ditch, water could have moved it.<\/p>\n<p>Or destroyed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat made you remember?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe detective asked if the woman was carrying something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you remembered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remembered being angry because she threw trash after smashing my car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut maybe it was not trash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An hour later Ramirez arrived with two officers.<\/p>\n<p>Ernesto showed them photographs on his phone of the damaged driveway and ditch.<\/p>\n<p>The search began before noon.<\/p>\n<p>The drainage channel ran behind three properties before emptying into a culvert.<\/p>\n<p>They found beer cans.<\/p>\n<p>A child\u2019s sandal.<\/p>\n<p>Two rusted tools.<\/p>\n<p>Plastic wrappers.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing brown.<\/p>\n<p>By three, Ramirez was ready to stop.<\/p>\n<p>Then one officer working near the culvert called out.<\/p>\n<p>He held up a mud-covered plastic evidence sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>Not police evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Something commercial.<\/p>\n<p>Clear plastic.<\/p>\n<p>Waterproof.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a brown paper envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Even from several yards away, I could see dark rectangular shapes through the soaked paper.<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez ordered everyone back.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle was called.<\/p>\n<p>The package was photographed where it lay.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody opened it in front of me.<\/p>\n<p>I watched from Ernesto\u2019s porch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you think?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had learned something from Ramirez.<\/p>\n<p>An idea was not evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Two hours later she called me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCraig.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRamirez.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what Thomas gave Brent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLikely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty thousand dollars in cash at one-thirty in the morning isn\u2019t normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmall safety-deposit-box style.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd a handwritten number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat number?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She read it.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>Seven digits.<\/p>\n<p>No explanation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBank account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBox number?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo area code.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the shop floor.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus was changing brake pads.<\/p>\n<p>Life continued around the edges of something growing larger by the hour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Laura throw away twenty thousand dollars?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez answered slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe she wasn\u2019t trying to throw away the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s my current question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The envelope had protected both.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had handed Brent something important enough to bring personally.<\/p>\n<p>Laura had taken it.<\/p>\n<p>Brent had tried to get it back while driving.<\/p>\n<p>Then, seconds after the crash, Laura had thrown the entire package into a drainage ditch rather than let Brent keep it.<\/p>\n<p>The cash might have been valuable.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps the money had only been camouflage for whatever the key opened.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastestdrama.com\/?p=1079\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Key from the Drainage Ditch Led to a Box Thomas Harlow Had Tried to Empty Before Police Reached It<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The child specialist did not react when Rick said Thomas Harlow\u2019s name.
