2 – My Brother Invited Everyone to Watch Him Claim Dad’s Fortune, Never Realizing the Safe Was Waiting to Tell a Different Story

By the time we reached Dad's house, my mouth had begun to hurt every time I swallowed.

I had stopped tasting blood constantly.

But the cut was still there.

So was the stain on my dress.

I hadn't changed.

Part of me wanted to.

I wanted to wash my face and put on something that didn't remind me of the church.

But another part of me knew what would happen if I disappeared to another room.

Julian would start talking.

He would explain to everyone why I couldn't be trusted.

He would turn my absence into another accusation.

And I was tired of giving him opportunities to speak for me.

So I stayed.

Dad's house looked painfully familiar.

That was one of the hardest things about going back.

The rooms were still his rooms.

His things were still where he had left them.

The study was waiting.

But he wasn't there.

I had spent so much time in that house while Dad was sick that my body almost expected to hear him call my name.

I paused near the study doorway.

For one second, I forgot about Julian.

I thought about Dad's medications.

The bills I had organized.

The ordinary tasks that had filled our days.

There had been so many small responsibilities that I had barely noticed how tired I was.

Now those responsibilities were ending.

Or changing.

I didn't know which felt worse.

Someone moved behind me.

The family had begun gathering.

And with them came the noise.

Shoes on the floor.

Quiet conversations.

People asking where they should stand.

The sound of relatives who weren't sure whether they were attending a family meeting or witnessing a fight.

I wished they had all gone home.

But I had invited them.

Dad wanted witnesses.

And after what happened at the church, I understood why.

Julian entered as though he already owned the room.

He moved past me without asking whether I needed anything.

His attention went straight to the safe.

The old steel box sat where it always had.

It wasn't beautiful.

There was nothing remarkable about it from the outside.

Just heavy metal.

A lock.

A door that had stayed closed through years of ordinary family life.

Dad had never treated it like a decoration.

It was something he used for things he wanted protected.

Julian had made it into something else.

A promise.

A fortune.

A future that apparently belonged to him.

He started talking before everyone had settled.

He told the relatives what he believed Dad had kept inside.

Cash.

A huge amount.

Two million dollars, according to Julian.

He also mentioned financial papers that could be transferred without much trouble.

And documents connected to property.

He spoke with such certainty that several people looked toward the safe as though they expected the money to be visible through the steel.

I watched him.

He wasn't asking what Dad had left.

He was announcing it.

There is a difference.

Julian had always spoken about money as though saying an amount aloud made it real.

A plan became a business.

A possibility became a promise.

A loan became an investment.

And an expectation became an entitlement.

I had seen it happen too many times.

But I had never seen him do it in front of so many people.

Not with Dad's death still so fresh.

He looked around the room.

He seemed pleased that everyone was listening.

I wondered whether he could see what they were seeing.

A son who had just buried his father.

A man with anger still written across his face.

And the sister he had struck standing nearby with blood on her clothes.

If he noticed, he didn't show it.

Serena stood near the fireplace.

My sister-in-law looked composed.

Her jewelry caught the light when she moved.

I recognized the diamonds.

I also knew enough about Julian's finances to wonder how they had paid for them.

It wasn't a question I intended to ask.

Not there.

Not in front of everyone.

But the sight stayed with me.

Julian liked expensive things.

So did Serena.

They liked the appearance of having already achieved the success Julian was always promising.

I had never understood how they managed the distance between that appearance and their actual circumstances.

Dad had worried about it.

I remembered that much.

But worry had never made Julian more careful.

Usually, it only made him resent the person who asked questions.

Serena glanced at me.

Then at the safe.

She smiled when Julian described its supposed contents.

I couldn't tell whether she was reassuring him or congratulating herself.

I didn't ask.

The whole room felt uncomfortable.

People shifted their weight.

Some watched Julian.

Others watched me.

I could feel their eyes returning to my dress.

The blood had darkened.

That almost made it worse.

It no longer looked like a fresh injury.

It looked like something I had carried into the house.

I folded the handkerchief again.

There was barely any clean white fabric left.

I held it in my hand rather than pressing it to my mouth.

Julian noticed.

His eyes moved toward the cloth.

Then away.

He didn't apologize.

I hadn't expected him to.

Still, some part of me waited.

I hate that part of myself now.

The part that kept looking for a better version of my brother.

The part that thought shame might reach him if he had enough time.

But Julian did not appear ashamed.

He appeared impatient.

He wanted the safe opened.

He wanted everyone to see the fortune he believed was waiting.

And he wanted me gone afterward.

That last part became clear when he approached me near the safe.

He spoke quietly enough that not everyone could hear.

The quiet made his words worse.

He told me to open the door.

Then he made it clear that I should leave the house once he had what belonged to him.

I looked at him.

My brother had stopped talking about Dad's home as Dad's home.

In his mind, it was already his.

I reminded him that the house had not been given to him simply because he expected it.

His jaw tightened.

He answered as though the subject had already been settled.

Dad's property belonged to him.

All of it.

Not part.

Not whatever the estate documents actually provided.

Everything.

I thought about how many times I had heard him use that same certainty.

He was older in his own mind than the rules.

More important than the facts.

More deserving than anyone who might disagree.

I had spent years trying to talk around that certainty.

Choosing my words.

Softening my answers.

Waiting until he was in a better mood.

That day, I had nothing left to soften.

I told him he couldn't decide ownership just by saying it.

He leaned closer.

I caught the smell of whiskey.

It surprised me.

Not because Julian never drank.

But because we had just come from Dad's funeral.

And because he had already lost control badly enough to hurt me.

The smell made me more cautious.

I was aware of where he stood.

How close he was.

How little space separated us.

I didn't want to turn my back on him.

I didn't want to be touched again.

That realization hurt in a different way.

This was my brother.

Someone I had known since childhood.

And I was watching his hands.

I used to think fear had to be dramatic.

A scream.

A run for the door.

Something obvious.

But sometimes fear is just knowing exactly how close another person stands.

And wanting them to move away.

Julian looked past me toward the safe.

He was still waiting.

I reached beneath my collar.

The chain caught against the fabric for a moment.

I pulled it free.

There was the key.

Brass.

Small.

Worn from use.

I held it between my fingers.

Every conversation in the room seemed to stop.

I could hear the movement of my own breathing.

I remembered Dad telling me to keep the key safe.

He had been serious.

I had been serious when I promised.

The promise had seemed simple then.

Protect the key.

Follow the instructions.

Wait until the right moment.

Now I understood that the key was only the easiest part.

The difficult part was standing in front of my family while they decided what kind of person I was.

Some believed Julian.

Some seemed unsure.

Some had already made their judgments before we entered the room.

Uncle Raymond remained among them.

I knew how he felt about Dad choosing me.

He had made that clear at the church.

I could almost hear the argument returning.

A daughter handling the estate.

A son being denied what he expected.

It sounded familiar because it had been said in different ways for years.

I had helped Dad because he needed help.

Julian had been treated as the natural heir because he was Julian.

It had never seemed fair.

But fairness wasn't what mattered most to me that afternoon.

Truth did.

Not the truth Julian could shout.

Not the version Serena might prefer.

The facts Dad had made arrangements to preserve.

I moved toward the safe.

The metal looked dull under the study lights.

I knelt.

My dress pulled awkwardly around my knees.

I became aware of the bloodstain again.

I remember thinking Dad would have hated seeing me like that.

He had never liked unnecessary cruelty.

And he would have been furious that Julian had struck me.

I wondered whether he had expected something this ugly.

He had warned me to be careful.

He had warned me not to confront Julian too soon.

But surely he hadn't wanted this.

Nobody wants to imagine their children fighting over a safe beside the day of their funeral.

I wanted to believe that.

The key rested in my palm.

I looked at it for a few seconds before fitting it into the lock.

Julian moved closer.

I could feel him behind me.

His impatience was almost physical.

He wanted the door open.

He wanted the money.

He wanted the satisfaction of being right.

And perhaps most of all, he wanted everyone to know that I had no power to stop him.

I placed the key in the lock.

It fitted easily.

Dad had made sure of that.

I turned it.

The mechanism moved with a small metallic sound.

So ordinary.

So final.

I looked up briefly.

Everyone seemed to be watching the door.

Not Dad's photograph.

Not each other.

The door.

The little steel door had become more important to them than the man who had owned it.

That thought made me ashamed of all of us.

Even myself.

Because I was watching it too.

I wrapped my fingers around the handle.

Then I opened the safe.

Source: <a href="https://shadowtnue.com/archives/11278" rel="noopener nofollow"
