1 – I Thought My Brother Would Respect Our Father’s Funeral Until He Saw the Small Brass Key Hanging Beneath My Black Dress

I used to believe there were places where my brother would control himself.

Our father's funeral was one of them.

I was wrong.

The service had not even finished when Julian came toward me.

I saw his shoulders first.

Then his face.

He was looking at the front of my dress, where the thin chain around my neck had slipped into view.

He knew what was attached to it.

A brass key.

Small enough to hide beneath my collar.

Important enough, apparently, for my brother to forget where we were.

I moved the chain back under the black fabric.

Julian saw me do it.

That made him angrier.

I should have walked away.

Looking back, I know that.

But I had spent so many years trying not to make things worse with Julian that standing still had become a habit.

I stayed beside the pew.

Our father lay in his coffin a few feet away.

The final prayer was still being spoken.

Julian stepped closer.

He wanted the key.

Not later.

Not after the guests had left.

Right then.

I told him quietly that the safe would be opened at the house.

His expression tightened.

I could tell that wasn't the answer he had come for.

He held out his hand.

I shook my head.

That was all.

One small movement.

My brother hit me.

I remember the sound more clearly than the pain.

A sharp crack that seemed much louder than it should have been.

My face turned sideways.

Something struck the inside of my mouth.

For a moment, I couldn't understand why my tongue tasted like metal.

Then I touched my lip.

Blood.

It was already running down my chin.

A drop landed on the front of my dress.

Then another.

I had spent that morning making sure my clothes looked respectful for Dad.

Now I was staring at red marks spreading across the black material.

Such a stupid thing to notice.

But grief does strange things to your mind.

Sometimes you remember the biggest moment by the smallest detail.

For me, it was the blood on that dress.

And the key still resting against my chest.

Someone screamed.

I recognized my aunt's voice.

Then two of our cousins grabbed Julian and pulled him away from me.

He fought them.

Not because he wanted to come back and apologize.

He still wanted the key.

He shouted that I was taking money that belonged to him.

He said it loudly enough for everyone to hear.

I looked around.

People who had come to say goodbye to our father were watching us instead.

Some looked shocked.

Some looked embarrassed.

Others simply stared.

I wanted them to look away.

I wanted one person to remember why we were there.

Dad.

We were supposed to be burying Dad.

Instead, my brother was making an accusation against me in front of his coffin.

I pressed my fingers against my mouth.

The blood was warm.

My face had started to throb.

Julian kept shouting.

His voice was familiar.

I had heard that same tone all my life.

It was the voice he used when he wanted something and believed nobody had the right to refuse him.

As children, he could turn almost any disagreement into proof that someone had treated him unfairly.

As an adult, he had become better at it.

More confident.

More convincing.

He could make a request sound like an obligation.

And an obligation sound like a debt someone owed him.

Dad knew that.

I knew it too.

The difference was that Dad had eventually stopped pretending it was harmless.

I had taken longer.

My name is Elena.

I was the daughter who stayed near the telephone when Dad was ill.

The one who kept track of his medicine.

The one who knew which bills needed attention.

The one who sat beside his hospital bed when there was almost nothing left to say.

I didn't do those things because I expected a reward.

I did them because he was my father.

And because someone needed to do them.

Julian had a different way of being a son.

He liked conversations about opportunities.

Businesses.

Plans.

Money he would earn once the right people believed in him.

He could speak for an hour about his next big idea.

But when Dad needed something ordinary, Julian was rarely the person who handled it.

Ordinary things were never exciting enough for him.

A prescription.

A payment.

A long night in a hospital chair.

Those things didn't make an interesting story.

And Julian loved an interesting story.

Especially when he was the main character.

I used to think his confidence was something I lacked.

Sometimes I even admired it.

That is difficult to admit now.

Because I eventually learned that confidence and honesty are not the same thing.

That day in the church, Julian was confident that he could frighten me into doing what he wanted.

He believed it would work because it usually had.

He had not understood what had changed.

Dad was gone.

But Dad had left me instructions.

Specific instructions.

And I had promised to follow them.

I reached for a handkerchief.

My fingers were shaking.

I pressed the white cloth against my injured lip and waited until I could speak without tasting so much blood.

Julian was still struggling against our cousins.

His accusations had become louder.

He said I was hiding his inheritance.

He said I was trying to keep everything for myself.

He used the word inheritance as though our father had been nothing more than a collection of valuables.

I looked at the coffin.

For one terrible second, I wanted Dad to sit up and tell Julian to stop.

That thought embarrassed me.

But it was real.

I wanted my father back.

Not because of the safe.

Not because of the money.

Because he had been the one person who could sometimes make Julian listen.

Sometimes.

Not always.

I lowered the handkerchief.

Everyone was still waiting.

So I told them what I had already told Julian.

The safe would be opened at Dad's house.

Everyone who wanted to witness it could be there.

Nothing would happen in secret.

I thought that would settle the matter.

Julian gave a short laugh.

He looked toward the relatives around us.

Then he questioned my right to make that decision.

He spoke as though the idea of me handling Dad's estate were ridiculous.

I felt something inside me go still.

There was a time when that look from my brother would have made me explain myself for several minutes.

I would have listed everything I had done.

Every bill.

Every hospital visit.

Every reason Dad might have trusted me.

I would have tried to persuade him.

But I no longer had to persuade him.

Dad had already made his decision.

I told Julian I was responsible for carrying out our father's estate instructions.

I was the executor.

For a few seconds, my brother had nothing to say.

That silence was almost more unsettling than his shouting.

His mouth remained slightly open.

He looked at me as though I had spoken in a language he didn't know.

Then Uncle Raymond came forward.

Raymond had always been certain about how families should work.

Sons came first.

Daughters helped.

That was the arrangement he understood.

He looked offended by what I had said.

He couldn't believe Dad would put me in charge instead of Julian.

There was no real question in his voice.

He had already decided what was right.

I looked at him.

My lip was swelling.

My dress was stained.

Dad's coffin was still beside us.

And Raymond wanted to argue about which child deserved authority.

I had never felt so tired.

I told him Dad had not been choosing one child to love more.

He had been choosing the person he believed would do what he asked.

Raymond looked away.

Julian did not.

I could see him thinking.

That was something I had learned to recognize.

When Julian was angry, he moved quickly.

When he was calculating, he became very still.

For a moment, he looked at the chain around my neck again.

He knew that key had been important to Dad.

He knew the safe existed.

He knew there were things inside it.

Or rather, he thought he knew.

I remembered one of my last conversations with Dad.

Not every word.

Some of those days had blurred together.

The medicines.

The hospital sounds.

The long periods when he rested with his eyes closed.

But I remembered the meaning.

Dad wanted me to be patient.

He wanted me to follow the instructions he had made.

He did not want me arguing with Julian before the right people were present.

At the time, I had found that difficult.

I knew Julian could be cruel.

I knew he could say things that made me want to defend myself immediately.

Dad knew it too.

That was why he had been so careful.

He had warned me that people could behave badly when they believed money was waiting for them.

I had hoped he was being too harsh.

I had hoped grief might bring Julian and me closer.

It is painful to admit how much hope I still carried into that church.

Even after everything.

I wanted one peaceful day.

One day when we stood beside each other as his children.

One day when nobody had to decide who was right.

But my brother had struck me in front of our father's coffin.

I could no longer pretend we were simply two people grieving differently.

The cousins finally managed to keep some distance between us.

Julian continued talking.

His words came in bursts.

The safe.

The house.

His share.

What he believed Dad had promised.

I heard the same subjects again and again.

Not once did he ask whether I was hurt.

I kept the cloth against my mouth.

It had become damp.

I folded it to find a clean corner.

That small movement made me notice how badly my hands were trembling.

I was frightened.

There.

I can say it now.

I was frightened of my own brother.

I was also angry.

But the fear was what I felt first.

Julian had shown me that he was willing to hurt me over a key.

And we still had to go to the house.

We still had to open the safe.

I knew what he expected to find.

I knew enough about Dad's instructions to understand that Julian was going to be disappointed.

I did not know exactly how he would react when the door opened.

That frightened me more than the punch.

Still, I had made Dad a promise.

And I was not going to break it because Julian had frightened me.

I slipped my fingers beneath my collar.

The chain was still there.

The brass key rested against my skin.

For some reason, feeling its weight helped.

It was a real thing.

Something Dad had trusted me to protect.

Not an argument.

Not a rumor.

Not something Julian could change by raising his voice.

I looked once more toward the coffin.

I wanted to say goodbye properly.

Without the shouting.

Without the watching faces.

Without having to wipe blood from my mouth.

But I couldn't change what had happened.

I could only decide what I would do next.

I lowered my hand.

I told the family that anyone who wanted to witness the opening could come to the house.

Then I stopped explaining.

Julian could accuse me again.

Raymond could question Dad's judgment.

People could whisper about the daughter with the key.

None of that changed the instructions.

I was taking everyone to Dad's study.

And I was going to open the safe where they could all see it.

Source: <a href="https://shadowtnue.com/archives/11278" rel="noopener nofollow"
