Denise is coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if somebody comes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Finch calls me and the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From the couch Mrs. Finch lifted the fireplace poker she had brought from upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd possibly an ambulance for whoever enters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite everything, Noah laughed.<\/p>\n<p>I kissed both boys and left.<\/p>\n<p>Blue lights washed the garage in flashes when I arrived.<\/p>\n<p>The front window had been broken beside the deadbolt.<\/p>\n<p>Whoever entered knew enough not to force the garage doors. Those had alarm contacts.<\/p>\n<p>The office looked as though someone had picked it up and shaken it.<\/p>\n<p>Desk drawers hung open.<\/p>\n<p>Invoices covered the floor.<\/p>\n<p>The old filing cabinet had been emptied.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph of Rick and Noah painting the shop sign lay facedown beneath a chair.<\/p>\n<p>I picked it up before Ramirez stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCraig.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>She pulled on gloves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was the document?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBottom desk drawer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKey?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy ring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed toward the drawer.<\/p>\n<p>The lock had been pried out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the diagnostic computer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn that shelf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Empty now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else missing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I walked the room visually.<\/p>\n<p>Cash box untouched.<\/p>\n<p>Old laptop untouched.<\/p>\n<p>My personal toolbox untouched.<\/p>\n<p>The small television untouched.<\/p>\n<p>A jar containing nearly sixty dollars in change untouched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey knew what they wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle, the same crime-scene technician from Thursday, dusted the window frame and desk.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stood in the service bay.<\/p>\n<p>His jaw flexed every time he looked toward the broken glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should\u2019ve been here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou leave at night like a normal person,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could\u2019ve\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat? The physical module is evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe laptop copy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConvenient, not essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo they stole nothing that matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez looked at the shattered window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey stole something very important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSubtlety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She explained what I had already begun to understand.<\/p>\n<p>Until that moment, police had evidence of a crash and concealment.<\/p>\n<p>Now someone had apparently entered the garage for the specific purpose of removing documents and equipment associated with the Mercedes investigation.<\/p>\n<p>If that person could be connected to Brent or Laura, the break-in would not weaken the case.<\/p>\n<p>It could strengthen it.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle called from the main bay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDetective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We followed him.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed at the concrete near the side entrance.<\/p>\n<p>A small smear of reddish dirt crossed the floor.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot from here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The gravel behind my garage was pale limestone.<\/p>\n<p>The soil around the lake, however, contained iron-rich clay that stained shoes, tires, and everything else a rusty red after rain.<\/p>\n<p>It had rained Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle photographed the marks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be anywhere,\u201d Ramirez cautioned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But I was thinking about Brent\u2019s lake house.<\/p>\n<p>And the red shoreline paths Noah always complained made his sneakers dirty.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, an officer checked neighboring businesses.<\/p>\n<p>The laundromat camera faced the wrong direction.<\/p>\n<p>The pharmacy across the street had a parking-lot camera.<\/p>\n<p>The manager was being called.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus walked behind the garage and returned holding something in a gloved hand he had apparently borrowed from Kyle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA button?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was actually a plastic fastener.<\/p>\n<p>Black.<\/p>\n<p>Stamped with a small logo.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle bagged it.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized the emblem immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Harlow Automotive Group.<\/p>\n<p>Employees wore black jackets during fall events.<\/p>\n<p>Each had branded snap fasteners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be garbage,\u201d Ramirez said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody wanted me deciding the case before evidence did.<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>But my pulse had started beating hard again.<\/p>\n<p>By one in the morning, police released the shop.<\/p>\n<p>I boarded the broken window with plywood.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus refused to leave until I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think he did it?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think whoever did it knew exactly what they were looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t my question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I tightened the last screw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. It wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Back at the apartment, Denise was asleep sitting upright in a dining chair with a file folder on her lap.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Finch had gone upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>The boys were sleeping in my room.<\/p>\n<p>I covered Denise with a blanket.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes opened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake me comfortable. I\u2019m leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sat up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShop?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRelease is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComputer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice already have the data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She rubbed her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo whoever did this is stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr desperate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I made coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Denise watched me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCraig.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need cameras.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the shop?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt your apartment. Shop. Parking lot. Everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think they\u2019d come here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think people who lose control sometimes try to regain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The coffee machine hissed.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd tomorrow we file for a protection order covering the children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgainst Brent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Laura?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat depends on what we can support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe tried to leave the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich matters. But you still need to think like their father, not like someone seeking revenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am thinking like their father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why I\u2019m reminding you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sunday morning began with pancakes.<\/p>\n<p>I made them badly.<\/p>\n<p>Noah declared the burned ones \u201ccrispy style\u201d and ate two.<\/p>\n<p>Rick barely spoke.<\/p>\n<p>At ten, Laura called.<\/p>\n<p>I let it go to voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>Then another call arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Morrison?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Gerald Pike. I represent Mr. Harlow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course Brent had hired a separate attorney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not discussing anything without Denise Okafor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m calling regarding an urgent financial matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe seven thousand dollars?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou performed unauthorized work on a vehicle associated with my client.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura ordered the repair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy client disputes that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen talk to Laura.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Harlow further alleges you intentionally damaged the vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcuse me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has had the Mercedes independently inspected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy one of his dealerships?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is irrelevant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. It really isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike continued as if I hadn\u2019t spoken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe inspection identified concerns about suspension installation, paint finish, and safety systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew every bolt I had torqued.<\/p>\n<p>Every panel I had aligned.<\/p>\n<p>Every electrical connector I had checked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recommend caution with accusations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recommend paying the bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat will not occur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, my client is considering damages against your business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The strategy became obvious.<\/p>\n<p>The unpaid repair had not embarrassed Brent enough.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted to turn my evidence into motive.<\/p>\n<p>If he could portray me as an incompetent mechanic angry about money, every discovery I had made might look tainted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend everything to Denise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hung up.<\/p>\n<p>A text arrived seconds later.<\/p>\n<p>From Laura.<\/p>\n<p>YOU CAUSED THIS.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>THE BOYS ARE TERRIFIED BECAUSE OF YOU.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>YOU\u2019RE DESTROYING THEIR FAMILY.<\/p>\n<p>My thumb hovered over the keyboard.<\/p>\n<p>I typed three different responses.<\/p>\n<p>Deleted all of them.<\/p>\n<p>Finally I wrote:<\/p>\n<p>Please communicate through counsel about the custody case. I will follow the court order regarding supervised contact.<\/p>\n<p>Her answer came immediately.<\/p>\n<p>YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO PUNISH ME.<\/p>\n<p>I put the phone facedown.<\/p>\n<p>Across the kitchen Rick was watching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas that Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wants us back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe misses you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we going back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders relaxed.<\/p>\n<p>That reaction told me more than anything he said.<\/p>\n<p>Around noon, Ramirez called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe got pharmacy video.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heartbeat quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid it show the break-in?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 12:41 a.m., a dark pickup entered the alley beside my garage.<\/p>\n<p>The plate was obscured by mud.<\/p>\n<p>A person wearing a dark hood exited.<\/p>\n<p>Height approximately six feet.<\/p>\n<p>Broad build.<\/p>\n<p>No clear face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be Brent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be a thousand people,\u201d Ramirez said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the truck has a distinctive repair on the passenger-side rear panel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of our officers remembered seeing a similar truck during the lake-house safety visit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwned by who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot Brent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of his dealerships?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis service director.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew the name before she said it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDerek Walsh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek had worked with me years earlier at the Dayton dealership.<\/p>\n<p>Not closely.<\/p>\n<p>But long enough.<\/p>\n<p>Long enough to know how diagnostic equipment worked.<\/p>\n<p>Long enough to recognize what information could be pulled from an airbag module.<\/p>\n<p>Long enough to know the layout of a repair shop.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou remember him?\u201d Ramirez asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was more.<\/p>\n<p>I could hear it in her tone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCraig, we checked Derek\u2019s phone records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the edge of the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt twelve-oh-seven Friday night, he received a six-minute call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Brent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe call came from Laura.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastestdrama.com\/?p=1076\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Laura\u2019s Call to the Man Who Broke Into My Garage Forced Me to Face a Possibility Worse Than Brent\u2019s Influence<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did not take the boys back to the garage.
