There\u2019s a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughed once, but there was no humor in it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re enjoying this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about Rick sitting across from me in the diner asking whether I was mad at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the truth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not enjoying any of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Two minutes later, Denise called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou awake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey contacted you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura first. her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlready?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever underestimate how fast people become organized when consequences arrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside the courtroom Laura sat beside a man I recognized from the divorce.<\/p>\n<p>Her old attorney.<\/p>\n<p>Brent was not there.<\/p>\n<p>Laura looked as though she had not slept.<\/p>\n<p>For a brief instant, seeing her like that pulled me backward years\u2014to sick kids, mortgage anxiety, mornings when one of us would quietly make coffee for the other after a fight.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>The softness that.<\/p>\n<p>At 10:17 the judge issued a temporary order.<\/p>\n<p>Rick and Noah would be placed with me immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Laura could have supervised contact.<\/p>\n<p>Brent could have none.<\/p>\n<p>The words should have felt like victory.<\/p>\n<p>They didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>They felt like getting permission to pull your children from a burning room after someone had already let them inhale smoke.<\/p>\n<p>I met the boys at a county office just before noon.<\/p>\n<p>Noah saw me first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ran so hard his backpack bounced against his shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>I dropped to one knee and caught him.<\/p>\n<p>Rick walked faster than usual but did not run.<\/p>\n<p>When he reached me, I wrapped an arm around him too.<\/p>\n<p>For several through the relief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t about anybody being mad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was crying last night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry you saw that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we going home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood which home he meant.<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to tell him everything would be fine.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>He deserved better than promises I could not guarantee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re coming with me today,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd nobody is going to ask you to lie about what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>At the apartment, Noah immediately checked that Chompy was there.<\/p>\n<p>Rick stood in the kitchen looking around as though the place had changed.<\/p>\n<p>It hadn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Same secondhand table.<\/p>\n<p>Same refrigerator with magnets shaped like tools.<\/p>\n<p>Same narrow hallway.<\/p>\n<p>But the boys had never stayed for an unknown number of days before.<\/p>\n<p>Until then my apartment had been Dad\u2019s place.<\/p>\n<p>Temporary by design.<\/p>\n<p>Two toothbrushes lived in a cup for weekends.<\/p>\n<p>Two drawers held pajamas.<\/p>\n<p>Two hooks held their coats.<\/p>\n<p>By evening, I understood that I was not ready for temporary custody emotionally or practically.<\/p>\n<p>And none of that mattered.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.
