If Laura suddenly discovered the garage had stopped the repair and police were involved, she and Brent might begin destroying evidence, coordinating stories, or leaving town.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I pretend nothing happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou complete the repair you were hired to complete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Denise.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sons are in that house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren\u2019s Services will see them today. Rick will be spoken with safely. We\u2019re not ignoring the children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I still hated it.<\/p>\n<p>Every instinct I had told me to drive to the lake house and bring them home immediately.<\/p>\n<p>But custody orders do not dissolve because a father is furious.<\/p>\n<p>Denise touched my arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us do this correctly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Correctly.<\/p>\n<p>That word had cost me plenty over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Denise opened her briefcase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Craig is releasing the vehicle tomorrow, I want signatures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA normal completion acknowledgment. They inspect the repair. They confirm they received the car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took out a legal pad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I want one additional sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wrote slowly.<\/p>\n<p>The language stated that damaged components removed during repair, including the airbag control module and stored crash information, had been retained and provided to law enforcement where required.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re going to see this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrent signs dealership paperwork without reading it,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Denise looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen that is Brent\u2019s decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez read the sentence and approved it.<\/p>\n<p>There was no deception in the document. No false statement. No hidden transfer of ownership.
