You and I need to speak about what you've encouraged your grandmother to do."

He paused.

"You've created serious problems with people who've been important to this family for years."

Another pause.

"Call me."

The message ended.

I stared at the screen.

He still believed the issue was my behavior.

Not the piano.

Not the house.

Not the false explanation he'd given his guests.

He wanted me to accept responsibility for the consequences.

I closed the message.

Then I opened my conversation with Miles.

I typed a brief note explaining that my parents were contacting me.

He replied during my afternoon break.

"Keep the messages. You aren't required to discuss the legal matters directly. Refer those questions to me."

I read his response several times.

Then I saved the voicemail.

It was a small thing.

Keeping a record instead of arguing.

But it felt like progress.

I finished my last class shortly after three.

The children filed out carrying instruments and backpacks.

I straightened the chairs.

I wiped down the whiteboard.

Then I gathered my things and drove to hospice.

The sky was beginning to darken when I arrived.

Trish was standing near the nursing station.

She smiled when she saw me.

"Your grandmother's been asking about you."

My chest tightened.

"Is she all right?"

"She's had a tiring day, but she's comfortable."

I nodded.

"Can I go in?"

"Of course."

Then Trish touched my sleeve.

"Everett, she's been looking through those concert programs."

I smiled.

"Did she enjoy them?"

"Very much."

Trish paused.

"She told me the story about a violinist who couldn't keep time."

I laughed.

"She told me that one yesterday."

"Well, she was still annoyed with him forty years later."

That sounded exactly like Grandma.

I thanked Trish and walked toward the room.

The lavender sachets were still beside the window.

Grandpa's photograph rested on the bedside table.

Several concert programs lay across Grandma's blanket.

She was examining one through her reading glasses.

When I entered, she looked up.

"There you are."

I pulled the chair close.

"Hi, Grandma."

She studied my face.

"How was school?"

I told her about Oliver's suggestion involving warm milk.

She laughed softly.

"That's sensible."

"He seemed very concerned."

"Children notice more than adults think."

I nodded.

Then I took her hand.

For a few minutes, we discussed my students.

She asked whether the girl who struggled with scales had improved.

I told her she had.

Grandma smiled.

"Good."

She looked toward the window.

Then back at me.

"How are you feeling after yesterday?"

I took a breath.

"Tired."

"That doesn't surprise me."

I looked at the concert program on her blanket.

"Did Miles tell you everything?"

"He told me what he considered important."

I nodded.

She studied my face.

"Did your father blame you?"

I laughed without humor.

"He sent messages."

"Of course he did."

I hesitated.

"Mom says I ruined her birthday."

Grandma closed the program.

"Did you?"

I looked at her.

"No."

"Then don't repeat her accusation as though it's a fact."

I lowered my eyes.

She squeezed my hand.

"Your mother had a birthday party. Your father chose to discuss property he didn't own. Those are separate decisions."

I smiled faintly.

"You make everything sound simple."

"It isn't simple."

She paused to breathe.

"But some things are clear."

I nodded.

She reached toward the table.

"Hand me Robert's photograph."

I picked it up.

The picture showed Grandpa standing beside the piano as movers guided it toward the house.

I placed it in her hands.

She smiled.

"He was so nervous that day."

I leaned closer.

"Why?"

"Because he'd bought something expensive without telling me."

I laughed.

"That sounds familiar."

She gave me a look.

"Your grandfather paid for his surprise with money he'd saved. That's a rather important difference."

I nodded.

"You're right."

She traced the edge of the photograph.

"He kept asking whether I liked it."

"What did you say?"

"I told him it was beautiful."

She smiled.

"Then he asked again."

I laughed.

"He wanted to be certain."

"He did."

She looked toward the window.

"He'd worked so hard for it."

For a moment, I could almost picture Grandpa standing there.

Young.

Nervous.

Proud of the gift he'd chosen.

I wondered whether he'd ever imagined that decades later, his son would sell the instrument while Loretta lay dying.

Grandma seemed to sense where my thoughts had gone.

"Don't let the last thing Calvin did become the only thing you remember about that piano."

I looked at her.

She continued.

"Your grandfather loved hearing me play. You learned there. We spent hundreds of good afternoons together."

I swallowed.

"I know."

"Those years still happened."

I stared at our hands.

"I just want it back."

"So do I."

Her voice was quiet.

Then she added, "But even if the instrument can't be recovered, nobody can undo the music we made."

I couldn't answer.

Grandma rested the photograph on the blanket.

"I want you to remember the music."

I nodded.

"I will."

She smiled.

Then she asked whether I'd brought my phone.

I took it from my pocket.

"Yes."

"Play something for me."

I opened a recording I'd saved months earlier.

It was a short piece I'd performed on my keyboard while preparing a lesson.

The sound wasn't perfect.

The recording picked up a faint hum from my apartment.

But Grandma listened carefully.

She closed her eyes.

When it finished, she opened them again.

"You rushed the middle."

I laughed.

"Of course I did."

She smiled.

"And the ending was lovely."

I felt my eyes sting.

It was such a familiar exchange.

The correction.

The compliment.

The certainty that she had listened to every note.

I wanted to keep that moment forever.

We played the recording again.

Then Grandma grew tired.

I adjusted her blanket.

She watched me with a thoughtful expression.

"Everett, there's something I want to explain."

I sat down.

"I'm listening."

She looked toward Grandpa's photograph.

"After Robert died, Calvin struggled."

I waited.

"He was already involved in business, but things weren't as secure as he liked people to believe."

I thought about Dad's expensive suits.

His confidence.

The way he talked about being successful.

Grandma continued.

"He asked whether he and Gwen could stay here while they got themselves established."

I nodded.

"I didn't know that."

"Most people didn't."

She paused.

"I thought it would be temporary."

I glanced at the room around us.

"How long ago?"

"Long enough that temporary became familiar."

She gave a sad smile.

"I didn't mind helping. The house felt empty after Robert died."

I squeezed her hand.

"But I should have insisted on clearer boundaries."

I looked at her.

"Did Dad promise he'd buy his own place?"

"He promised several things."

She spoke without bitterness.

That made it harder to hear.

"I believed some of them longer than I should have."

I thought about the financial records in her box.

The property taxes.

The utilities.

The maintenance payments.

"Why keep paying the expenses?"

Grandma looked at me.

"Because the house was mine, and because I didn't want financial arguments to become a daily battle."

She took a careful breath.

"That was my choice."

I nodded.

"But your father began treating my assistance as something he was entitled to."

She looked down.

"And I allowed it to continue."

I wanted to tell her not to blame herself.

But she raised her hand before I could speak.

"I'm not asking you to excuse him."

I waited.

"I'm explaining why I finally decided to put stronger protections in place."

"The trust?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

I glanced toward the door.

"Miles showed me some of it."

"I know."

She smiled faintly.

"He told me you asked sensible questions."

I felt embarrassed.

"I didn't understand half of what he said."

"Then ask him again."

I laughed.

"That's what I tell my students."

"Good teaching, isn't it?"

We smiled at each other.

Then her expression became serious.

"Your father has spent years believing that if he speaks with enough confidence, other people will accept his version of events."

I nodded.

"He usually gets away with it."

"I know."

She looked toward the window.

"But papers don't change because somebody speaks loudly."

I thought about the birthday party.

Dad standing beside the Mercedes.

Hugh reading the deed.

Mom sitting beside the untouched cake.

Grandma was right.

The documents had remained the same no matter how often my father objected.

I looked at her.

"Are you going to make them leave the house?"

She was quiet for a moment.

"I've given Miles instructions to review the arrangement properly."

I waited.

"Calvin and Gwen will have opportunities to respond."

I nodded.

"I don't want them thrown out without warning."

"Neither do I."

She looked directly at me.

"But I also don't intend to let them continue using my property as though I no longer exist."

That sounded like Grandma.

Fair.

Firm.

Unwilling to be cruel.

But no longer willing to be ignored.

I leaned back in the chair.

For a moment, we simply listened to the quiet sounds of the hospice room.

Then Grandma asked about Delaney.

I hesitated.

"She was upset."

"About the car?"

"Mostly."

Grandma closed her eyes briefly.

"I wondered."

I told her about our conversation in the den.

How Delaney had said Ryder was angry.

How she feared losing the relationship.

How she kept insisting she had trusted Dad.

Grandma listened.

Then she sighed.

"Your sister has been taught that receiving something expensive proves she's loved."

I looked at her.

"That's exactly how she acts."

"Yes."

Grandma paused.

"But I hope she learns that love and money aren't interchangeable."

I nodded.

"Do you think she will?"

"I don't know."

Her honesty surprised me.

She didn't pretend everything would become better.

She didn't promise Delaney would apologize.

She simply acknowledged what neither of us could control.

I looked at her tired face.

"Are you disappointed in us?"

Grandma frowned.

"In you?"

"In the family."

She considered the question.

"I'm disappointed in choices people have made."

I nodded.

"That isn't the same as wishing I didn't love them."

I looked away.

I understood what she meant.

I loved my parents.

Even after everything.

I loved Delaney too.

But I couldn't keep protecting their choices.

Grandma reached for my hand.

"Everett, I want you to have a life that isn't organized around keeping your father pleased."

My throat tightened.

She continued.

"After I'm gone, he'll probably tell you what I meant, what I wanted, and what you should feel."

I lowered my head.

"He already does."

"I know."

She squeezed my hand.

"That's why I wrote things down."

I looked at her.

"Your letters?"

"And the formal documents."

I nodded.

"Your father may disagree with my decisions."

She took a slow breath.

"But he doesn't get to replace them with his own."

I stayed beside her until the evening nurse came in.

Trish checked the equipment and helped Grandma adjust her position.

I stepped aside.

Grandma looked very tired now.

I knew I needed to leave.

I gathered the concert programs.

She asked me to keep one beside her bed.

The one from the performance where she'd argued with the violinist.

I smiled.

"Still your favorite?"

"Not because of him."

We laughed.

Then I kissed her forehead.

"I'll see you tomorrow."

She nodded.

"Go home and sleep."

"I'll try."

"And Everett?"

I turned.

"Yes?"

"Don't answer your father just because he demands an answer."

I felt a small smile.

"All right."

She settled against the pillows.

I left the room quietly.

Outside, the hallway smelled of disinfectant and fresh coffee.

Trish was updating a chart.

She looked up.

"Everything okay?"

I nodded.

"She's tired."

"She is."

I hesitated.

"Could you make sure that photograph stays near her bed?"

Trish glanced toward the room.

"Of course."

I thanked her.

Then I walked to the elevators.

My phone vibrated before I reached the parking lot.

It was Dad again.

This time, a text.

"You cannot hide behind that lawyer forever."

I stood beside my car reading it.

I felt the old anxiety begin to rise.

Then I remembered Grandma lying in bed, telling me to remember the music.

I put the phone away.

I wasn't hiding.

I was allowing a legal problem to be handled by someone qualified to address it.

That was different.

I drove home.

At my apartment, I made dinner and reviewed the next day's lessons.

Then I sat at the keyboard.

I played the recording Grandma had listened to.

The same piece.

The one where I'd rushed the middle.

This time, I slowed down.

I paid attention to the notes.

I imagined her beside me.

When I finished, I smiled.

The ending really was lovely.

I switched off the keyboard and went to bed.

I didn't answer Dad.

For once, I let silence mean that the conversation was finished.

Not that I had surrendered.

Source: <a
