She said it was for me. Dad was sitting right there."

Mom stared.

Dad's expression became cold.

"Everett."

I looked at him.

For once, I didn't look away.

"She told you what she wanted."

He opened his mouth.

I waited.

He didn't answer.

Miles spoke before the silence became another argument.

"Everett is correct that Loretta had expressed those wishes. They were also recorded independently."

I lowered my eyes.

My hands were trembling.

But I didn't regret speaking.

I'd told the truth.

Nothing more.

The room remained quiet.

Then Hugh asked another question.

"Calvin, have you ever used this property as collateral for a business obligation?"

My father went completely still.

I felt my stomach drop.

That question hadn't occurred to me.

I'd known Dad boasted about owning the lakehouse.

I'd never considered whether he might have made financial representations about it.

Dad answered after a pause.

"No formal mortgage against it."

Hugh studied him.

"That's not exactly what I asked."

Miles remained silent.

This was a conversation between business associates.

And I could see my father trying to decide how much he could say.

Finally, he replied.

"I've discussed the property as part of our family's financial position."

Hugh nodded slowly.

"Then we'll need to review precisely what was represented."

Dad looked alarmed.

"Hugh, come on."

Hugh didn't raise his voice.

"I'd rather know the facts."

My father glanced toward Ryder.

Then Delaney.

His expression seemed to ask them for support.

Neither spoke.

I wondered whether Dad had expected Hugh to defend him automatically.

Perhaps he believed their business relationship was strong enough to survive anything.

But Hugh looked like a man who had just discovered that important information might have been inaccurate.

He wasn't interested in reassuring Calvin.

He wanted records.

Miles closed the property folder.

"Loretta has instructed me to provide formal notice concerning her property and to review any unauthorized transactions."

Dad folded his arms.

"Are you threatening to throw us out?"

Miles shook his head.

"I'm not announcing an immediate eviction."

Mom exhaled.

But Miles continued.

"Your mother has directed that the occupancy arrangement be reviewed. Any future changes will be handled through the proper legal process."

Dad stared at him.

For the first time that afternoon, he seemed to understand that the house wasn't something he could simply claim.

He could no longer assume the arrangement would continue forever.

And he couldn't promise the property to Delaney.

Or use it as his own asset.

Not without Grandma's authority.

Mom sat down.

Her dress gathered around her knees.

She looked toward the birthday flowers.

I wondered whether she had imagined spending her sixtieth birthday this way.

Of course she hadn't.

She'd expected compliments.

Photographs.

Congratulations.

Perhaps people admiring the Mercedes.

She hadn't expected legal documents placed beside the cake.

A woman who had known Grandma for decades approached Miles.

"May I ask how Loretta is feeling?"

His expression softened.

"She's very tired, but she's comfortable."

The woman nodded.

"Please tell her Margaret sends her love."

"I will."

Margaret looked toward me.

"Everett, you've been visiting her?"

"Every day."

She touched my arm.

"She's lucky to have you."

I felt my eyes sting.

I wanted to say I was the lucky one.

But I couldn't get the words out.

Margaret returned to her place near the window.

Miles began gathering his papers.

I thought the discussion was finished.

Then my father spoke.

"Mother has always favored Everett."

His voice was bitter.

I looked up.

Dad was staring at me.

"This is what happens when someone spends years filling an old woman's head with stories."

I felt as though the floor had shifted.

He was blaming me.

Even now.

Even after everything Miles had shown.

Mom didn't object.

Delaney looked down.

I could feel the old shame beginning to rise.

Dad continued.

"Everett's been jealous of his sister for years."

I stared at him.

He gestured toward the Mercedes outside.

"He couldn't stand seeing us do something good for Delaney."

My throat tightened.

There it was.

The same accusation I'd heard in his living room.

Jealous.

Sensitive.

Dramatic.

He was trying to turn the entire situation into a dispute between siblings.

I thought about all the years I'd accepted that explanation.

Whenever Delaney received something I didn't.

Whenever my parents dismissed my career.

Whenever I asked to be treated fairly.

Somehow, wanting fairness had become proof of jealousy.

I looked at Dad.

"I didn't ask Grandma to give me the piano."

He laughed coldly.

"Of course not."

"She chose to."

My voice shook slightly.

"But you knew that."

He started to speak.

I continued.

"And I didn't ask her to call Miles."

The room was silent.

"I told her what happened. She made that decision herself."

Dad looked furious.

I felt frightened.

But I stayed where I was.

I remembered Grandma's hand around mine.

Her voice thanking me for telling her.

I remembered the old photograph.

The seven-year-old boy trying to play a simple exercise.

Grandma watching patiently.

I wasn't seven anymore.

And I wasn't going to apologize for telling the truth.

Miles stepped forward.

"Calvin, the arrangements we're discussing were established years before the piano was sold."

Dad looked at him.

"Your mother made those decisions while she was healthy and independent."

Miles paused.

"Everett didn't create them."

My father's face reddened.

He looked toward the guests.

Perhaps he expected someone to agree with him.

Nobody did.

Hugh examined the documents again.

Margaret stood near the window.

Mom looked exhausted.

Delaney remained beside Ryder.

The room had lost its festive warmth.

But the truth was finally present in it.

I felt it in the silence.

My father couldn't explain it away.

He couldn't make the deed disappear.

He couldn't turn Grandma's written instructions into a misunderstanding.

And he couldn't make everyone believe I had invented the situation.

Miles placed the final document in his briefcase.

Then he looked toward Dad.

"We'll contact you regarding the piano transaction and the financial records."

Dad didn't answer.

Miles continued.

"Loretta also asked me to make clear that her current instructions remain in force."

Mom raised her head.

"What instructions?"

Miles looked at her.

"Her trust and related estate arrangements."

I saw my father stiffen again.

I didn't know every detail of those documents.

Miles had shown me only the portions Grandma authorized.

But I understood that she had made decisions long before entering hospice.

Decisions my parents hadn't expected.

Mom looked toward Dad.

"Calvin?"

He didn't speak.

For the first time in my life, I saw both my parents uncertain about something they couldn't simply take over.

It was painful to witness.

And strangely relieving.

Miles closed his briefcase.

Then he looked at me.

"Everett, could I speak with you for a moment?"

I nodded.

We moved toward the hallway.

Behind us, guests began talking quietly.

I heard someone mention Grandma.

Someone else asked about the piano.

The birthday music continued playing.

But nobody seemed to be listening to it.

Miles stopped near the front door.

"You handled yourself well."

I shook my head.

"I barely said anything."

"You said what you knew."

I looked toward the living room.

"Dad thinks this is my fault."

Miles followed my gaze.

"He may continue to believe that."

I swallowed.

"What am I supposed to do?"

"Keep your account accurate.
