Your grandmother has authorized me to speak with you. Could you come to my office this afternoon?"

I stopped beside my car.

Another message followed.

"St. Paul. 1:30 p.m. Bring any documents relating to the piano."

I read both messages twice.

My first feeling was relief.

Someone was finally taking the situation seriously.

My second feeling was fear.

I had never needed an attorney before.

The closest I had come was signing the lease for my apartment.

I didn't know what questions to ask.

I didn't know whether I would have to pay him.

And I couldn't imagine what documents I could possibly bring.

Then I remembered the torn paper.

It was still inside the envelope on my kitchen table.

I sent Miles a reply.

"I can be there."

He responded a few minutes later.

"Good. Your grandmother knows we're meeting."

I put the phone away and entered the building.

The familiar sounds of school greeted me.

Lockers closing.

Children laughing.

Someone calling down the hallway.

For the next hour, I tried to concentrate on work.

I helped a group of students practice counting rests.

I corrected a boy who kept lifting his shoulders whenever he played.

I reminded another child to breathe before starting.

But my thoughts kept returning to Grandma.

By late morning, I knew I couldn't teach properly for the rest of the day.

I found my principal outside her office.

I explained that I needed the afternoon for a family matter.

She looked at me for several seconds.

Then she nodded.

"Go take care of what you need to."

I thanked her.

She didn't ask for details.

I appreciated that more than she knew.

I drove home first.

My apartment was exactly as I had left it.

The cup from the night before was still beside the sink.

My coat lay across the chair.

And the envelope containing the torn receipt was on the table.

I picked it up.

For a moment, I considered whether it was ridiculous to bring a piece of paper I'd pulled from a trash can.

Then I remembered the empty place in Grandma's living room.

I tucked the envelope into my bag.

I also brought the photograph of Grandma and me at the piano.

I wasn't sure why.

It wasn't legal evidence.

But it reminded me what I was trying to protect.

The drive to St. Paul took me across the river.

The weather had improved slightly.

Gray clouds still covered most of the sky, but the roads were dry enough to drive comfortably.

I followed the directions on my phone.

Miles's office was in a quiet business district.

The building wasn't impressive.

There was no enormous entrance.

No shiny glass lobby.

Just a low brick structure with a modest sign.

Wexler and Associates.

I parked nearby and sat for a moment.

Then I went inside.

The reception area smelled faintly of paper and coffee.

An older woman sat behind a desk.

She looked up when I entered.

"Can I help you?"

"I'm Everett Whitaker. I have an appointment with Mr. Wexler."

She smiled politely.

"He's expecting you."

She directed me down a short hallway.

I heard my shoes against the floor.

That sound reminded me of walking toward an examination room.

I had no idea what I was about to learn.

Miles stood when I entered.

He looked to be somewhere in his late sixties.

His hair was silver.

His glasses had thin frames.

His dark suit was neat but not flashy.

He held out his hand.

"Everett."

I shook it.

"Mr. Wexler."

"Miles is fine."

He gestured toward a chair.

"Please sit."

I lowered myself into it.

His office was filled with books and carefully arranged folders.

There were framed certificates on one wall.

A small photograph of a woman and two children stood on a shelf.

Nothing about the room suggested he was trying to impress anyone.

He sat across from me.

"How is Loretta today?"

"She was awake when I left. Tired, but clear."

He nodded.

"That's consistent with what I've heard."

I hesitated.

"Are you really her attorney?"

He looked at me for a moment.

Then he smiled slightly.

"Yes. For quite a long time."

I felt embarrassed.

"I'm sorry. I just didn't know."

"There's no need to apologize."

He opened a folder.

"Your grandmother keeps certain matters private."

I nodded.

"That sounds like her."

Miles rested his hands on the desk.

"Before we discuss anything else, I want you to understand that Loretta has authorized this meeting."

"Okay."

"She's been able to communicate her wishes clearly. Her illness doesn't automatically take away her legal decision-making authority."

I remembered what Trish had told me.

"My parents keep saying she's confused."

Miles's expression became serious.

"Have you observed confusion?"

I thought carefully.

"She gets tired. Sometimes she loses her place when she's speaking. But she knows who I am. She remembers things. She asked me to collect photographs from specific shelves in her house."

He nodded.

"Those are useful observations."

I leaned forward.

"Mom and Dad have been asking hospital staff whether she can sign things."

He stopped moving the papers.

"Who told you that?"

"One of her nurses."

He considered the information.

"Thank you. I'll make sure Loretta knows, if she hasn't already been told."

My stomach tightened.

"Do you think they're trying to get her to sign something?"

"I don't want to speculate beyond what we can establish."

He spoke evenly.

"But questions about a person's decision-making capacity can become important when property and financial authority are involved."

I nodded slowly.

He opened the folder.

"Now, tell me what you believe about the house in Wayzata."

The question surprised me.

"Grandma's house?"

"Yes."

I shifted in my chair.

"I thought my parents owned it."

Miles didn't react.

I continued.

"They've been living there for years. They renovated the kitchen. They host parties. Dad always talks about the property as if it's his."

"Has anybody ever shown you a deed?"

I shook my head.

"No."

He turned a document toward me.

"Read the name."

I leaned forward.

The paper contained legal descriptions I didn't understand.

Lot information.

Property details.

An address I recognized immediately.

Then I saw the owner's name.

Loretta Bowmont.

I stared at it.

"That's Grandma."

"Yes."

I looked up.

"But Dad said…"

I stopped.

Miles waited.

I looked back at the document.

"Grandma still owns the house?"

"That's correct."

I felt heat rise into my face.

"All of it?"

"According to the title records, yes. There has been no transfer of ownership to Calvin and Gwen."

I sat back.

For years, my parents had treated that property as one of their greatest accomplishments.

Dad talked about how difficult it was to maintain a home near the lake.

Mom complained about landscaping costs.

Delaney referred to it as our family's estate.

At parties, people complimented my father on his success.

He accepted those compliments without hesitation.

And the house wasn't even his.

I looked at Miles.

"Then why does he say it belongs to him?"

"That's a question Calvin would need to answer."

"But Grandma knows?"

"Of course."

I shook my head.

"I don't understand."

Miles folded his hands.

"Your grandmother allowed your parents to use the property. She did not give it to them."

"Why?"

"She wanted to help her son."

I thought about Grandma's tired face.

How often had she done things for Calvin that nobody else even knew about?

Miles continued.

"After your grandfather died, Loretta made certain arrangements to support the family. Some were temporary. Others continued because she chose not to disturb them."

I glanced at the document.

"Did Dad know the house was hers?"

Miles looked directly at me.

"Yes."

That answer hurt in a way I hadn't expected.

Dad hadn't simply misunderstood.

He had known.

He had allowed everyone else to believe something different.

I rested my hands on my knees.

"So they've been pretending."

Miles spoke carefully.

"I can tell you who owns the property. I can't tell you what your father privately believes or intends."

I nodded.

That distinction mattered.

He wasn't guessing.

He was showing me paper.

I looked around the office.

"Is this why Grandma wanted you at the party?"

"It's part of the reason."

I swallowed.

"There's more?"

Miles opened another folder.

"Yes."

He took out several documents.

"Five years ago, Loretta established a trust."

I frowned.

"A trust?"

"A legal arrangement designed to manage and protect certain assets according to her instructions."

He explained the basics slowly.

I listened as carefully as I could.

Grandma had made plans for her property.

She had chosen who would have authority.

She had arranged what should happen to certain belongings.

Those plans were not based on whatever Calvin decided at the last minute.

They existed in writing.

With dates.

With signatures.

With records Miles had kept.

He turned another page.

"The piano is specifically identified in the trust documents and related instructions."

I felt my chest tighten.

"She put the piano in there?"

"Yes."

"Before she got sick?"

"Several years ago."

I stared at him.

"Why?"

He looked toward the photograph I had placed on the desk.

"Because she knew it mattered to you."

I swallowed.

"She told everyone last month."

"Yes. And she had already recorded her intentions."

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

I had spent the previous evening trying to convince my parents that Grandma's promise meant something.

They had treated it as an emotional outburst.

Something a sick woman had said without thinking.

But she had been thinking about it for years.

Miles continued.

"An unauthorized sale of an item held under these arrangements raises serious legal questions."

I looked at him.

"Does that mean Dad stole it?"

"I'm not going to give you a criminal conclusion based only on a conversation."

He spoke calmly.

"But if Calvin sold property he didn't own and wasn't authorized to sell, the transaction must be examined. The buyer's position, the transfer documents, and the destination of the money all matter."

I nodded.

He wasn't promising anything.

Somehow, that made me trust him more.

I reached into my bag.

"I found something."

I placed the envelope on his desk.

He opened it.

Inside was the torn piece of paper.

He unfolded it carefully.

"Where did this come from?"

"Grandma's kitchen trash."

He looked up.

I explained how I'd found the empty corner.

How Mom refused to tell me where the piano went.

How I had noticed the paper while collecting the albums.

Miles examined both sides.

He adjusted his glasses.

Then he reached for a small magnifying lens.

I sat quietly while he studied the fragments.

Finally, he nodded.

"This could help identify the business involved."

My heart lifted slightly.

"Really?"

"Possibly. We need the complete transaction records."

I leaned forward.

"Can you find the piano?"

"I can investigate its sale."

He folded the paper and placed it inside a protective sleeve.

"If you agree, I'd like to retain this for now."

"Of course."

He wrote a brief note.

Then he looked at me again.

"Did your father say anything about how the money was paid?"

"No. Just that he got ninety-five thousand."

"Did he mention a buyer?"

"No."

"A sales agreement?"

"No."

"Did he say who signed the documents?"

I shook my head.

"He acted like it was his decision."

Miles wrote something down.

I felt foolish for not having asked those questions.

I had been so upset that I hadn't thought beyond the piano being gone.

Miles seemed to notice.

"Everett, you weren't conducting an investigation. You were confronting a family member about something painful."

I nodded.

Then I looked at the photograph on his desk.

It showed me as a child beside Grandma.

Miles picked it up carefully.

"Is this the instrument?"

"Yes."

He studied the picture.

"Beautiful."

"Grandpa bought it for her."

"She told me."

I looked up.

"She did?"

Miles nodded.

"Loretta speaks about that piano with considerable affection."

I swallowed.

"She said Grandpa saved for it."

"He did."

Miles placed the photograph back in front of me.

"Your grandmother has never treated the piano as merely a financial asset."

That was exactly what I needed somebody to understand.

I looked down at the picture.

For a few moments, I couldn't speak.

Then I asked the question that had been bothering me since the previous night.

"Why didn't Grandma stop Dad sooner?"

Miles leaned back.

"She made plans. She gave instructions. But she also wanted to preserve a relationship with her son."

I nodded slowly.

"Even though he treated her badly?"

"People don't always stop loving their children when those children disappoint them."

That sentence stayed with me.

Grandma had known who Calvin was.

She had hoped he would choose differently.

I imagined how painful that must have been.

Miles continued.

"Your grandmother has been observing what happens when she isn't directly managing every family interaction."

I looked at him.

"Observing?"

"She knows more about the family's arrangements than they realize."

He said it without satisfaction.

There was no pleasure in his voice.

Only sadness.

I sat quietly.

Then I remembered something else.

"Mom said Grandma wasn't thinking clearly because of her medication."

Miles nodded.

"That claim needs to be treated carefully. Capacity is specific to the decision and the person's condition at the time. Medication alone doesn't prove incapacity."

I thought about Grandma choosing photographs.

Remembering names.

Correcting musical phrasing.

Asking me to bring her phone.

She had seemed more certain than anybody else in the family.

Miles closed one folder.

"Sunday is going to be difficult."

I swallowed.

"What happens?"

"Your grandmother wants certain information presented in front of people who have heard your parents' version of events."

"At Mom's birthday party?"

"Yes."

I rubbed my hands together.

"That's going to be awful."

"It may be uncomfortable."

I laughed weakly.

"That's an understatement."

Miles gave me a small, sympathetic smile.

"Probably."

Then he grew serious.

"But your grandmother is concerned about what happens after she's gone. She wants the truth established somewhere outside the family."

I thought about Dad's talent for controlling conversations.

He could convince people that any disagreement was somebody else's fault.

He had done it for years.

Grandma knew that too.

I looked at Miles.

"What do I need to do?"

"Attend the party. Don't begin an argument. Don't make accusations you can't support."

I nodded.

"Let your parents speak for themselves."

"Okay."

"And if anyone pressures you to sign something, bring it to me before making a decision."

I looked at him.

"Do you think that will happen?"

"I'd rather prepare you for a possibility than leave you unprepared."

I nodded.

He handed me a sealed envelope.

"Keep this somewhere safe."

I took it.

"What's inside?"

"Contact information and copies of certain instructions your grandmother authorized me to share with you."

I looked at the envelope.

It felt heavier than paper should.

Miles stood.

Our meeting was over.

I rose from the chair.

"Thank you."

He shook my hand.

"Your grandmother has been worried about you."

I felt my throat tighten.

"Me?"

"Yes."

I stared at him.

"She's the one who's dying."

He nodded.

"She knows."

Then he said something I would remember long afterward.

"She's trying to make sure you won't spend the rest of your life apologizing for wanting what she freely chose to give you."

I couldn't answer.

I thanked him again and left.

Outside, the afternoon had turned darker.

I sat in my car and looked at the envelope.

I thought about the deed.

The trust.

The piano.

The years my parents had spent acting as though Grandma's possessions were theirs.

Something had shifted in my understanding of the family.

I had always believed Calvin controlled everything because he owned everything.

Now I knew he had been allowed to use things that belonged to someone else.

That wasn't the same as ownership.

And Grandma had known the difference all along.

I drove home with Miles's envelope beside me.

At my apartment, I placed it on the kitchen table.

Then I stood in front of my little keyboard.

For the first time since discovering the piano was gone, I switched it on without feeling sick.

I sat down.

I played the simple exercise Grandma had taught me when I was seven.

The notes sounded thinner on the electronic keys.

The instrument responded differently.

But the melody was the same.

I played it twice.

Then I turned off the keyboard.

Grandma had once told me that when a piece of music became difficult, I should stop fighting the notes and pay attention to their order.

One at a time.

That was what I needed to do now.

Find the piano.

Understand the paperwork.

Let Miles handle what I couldn't.

And keep showing up for Grandma.

I looked at the photograph on the table.

The little boy beside her was concentrating so hard that he seemed to have forgotten anybody else existed.

I remembered how safe I had felt.

I wanted that feeling back.

Not the innocence of believing everyone in my family would be fair.

That was gone.

I wanted the certainty that I had a right to sit at the piano and play.

Grandma had given me that once.

Now she was trying to give it to me again.

Source: us45.longbientruck.com

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Found Grandma’s Hidden Letter, and the Papers Inside Proved My Father Had Been Living on Her Generosity

I arrived at school later than usual that morning.
