Your mom recognized one danger and failed to recognize\u2014or refused to stop\u2014another one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew I was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen she recognized it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan did not soften.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked angry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen she should have stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer seemed to settle something.<\/p>\n<p>Not heal it.<\/p>\n<p>Clarify it.<\/p>\n<p>She returned to Saturn.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan watched her.<\/p>\n<p>He realized Lily did not need him to turn Claire into a villain or rescue her into innocence.<\/p>\n<p>She needed him to tolerate the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Claire had protected her from Meredith\u2019s secret Canada plan.<\/p>\n<p>Claire had also participated in the plan that put her on the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>Both were real.<\/p>\n<p>That evening Dr. Perez called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLily told me she may be ready for a live supervised call with Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan\u2019s body tightened automatically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said maybe next week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think she is ready?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think she is ready to try ten minutes with the ability to stop immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan looked toward Lily\u2019s room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if Claire says the wrong thing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will end it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if Lily freezes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will end it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if she asks to leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe end it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sound unhappy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not the same as believing it is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan hated therapists too, apparently.<\/p>\n<p>The call happened eight days later.<\/p>\n<p>Claire appeared on a secure video screen from a treatment office.<\/p>\n<p>Lily sat beside Dr. Perez.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan remained in the room only because Lily asked him to.<\/p>\n<p>Claire saw her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds she could not speak.<\/p>\n<p>Lily spoke first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Lily held up the repaired solar system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaturn fell off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire laughed once through tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt always does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked at Nathan.<\/p>\n<p>He did not intervene.<\/p>\n<p>Claire said, \u201cYou fixed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad used too much tape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan objected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not consulted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Claire did too.<\/p>\n<p>For six minutes they talked about school.<\/p>\n<p>Scout.<\/p>\n<p>The new house.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>Then Lily suddenly asked, \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you stop?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room changed.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Perez leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>Claire did not pretend she misunderstood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Grandma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot that he would hurt me. I was afraid of losing control of what happened next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Claire continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I was angry. And jealous.
