You understand that, right?”

I stared at the road.

“Travis, I'm asking about Mom.”

“And I'm trying to save her.”

Then he hung up.

I should have noticed something.

Looking back, I can see how strange that conversation was.

He had repeated the amount twice.

He hadn't told me what was wrong with her heart.

He hadn't even mentioned whether she was in pain.

But I was frightened, and fear made everything else seem unimportant.

That was something Travis understood very well.

By the time I reached the hospital, my blouse was damp beneath my blazer.

I parked badly.

I barely looked at the lines.

I hurried through the glass entrance and toward the emergency department.

The building smelled of disinfectant and stale coffee.

A television played quietly above a waiting area.

Someone was coughing nearby.

I remember those little details because the next few minutes became fixed in my mind.

I approached the reception desk.

“My mother is here. My mother needs emergency surgery.”

She tightened her grip slightly.

“Please.”

There was something about her voice.

She wasn't shouting.

She wasn't acting like someone managing an emergency.

She sounded afraid of being overheard.

“I need to see my mother,” I said.

“You will.”

She glanced behind me.

“But not yet.”

Before I understood what was happening, she opened the supply room door and guided me inside.

Shelves lined the walls.

There were boxes of gloves, packages of dressings, folded linens, and cleaning supplies.

The room was narrow enough that I could almost touch both sides.

She left the door slightly open.

Then she raised one finger to her mouth.

“Don't speak.”

I stared at her.

“What is going on?”

She leaned closer.

“Just listen for a minute. You'll understand why I stopped you.”

I wanted to push past her.

I wanted to ask whether my mother had stopped breathing.

But Sheila's expression held me in place.

Through the opening, I could see part of the room across the corridor.

Martha's room.

My breathing became shallow.

At first I saw the foot of the hospital bed.

Then I leaned slightly to one side.

And I saw my mother.

She wasn't unconscious.

She wasn't struggling for breath.

She was sitting upright.

Her skin looked normal.

She was adjusting the neckline of her hospital gown.

There was no frightening cluster of machines surrounding her.

No intravenous line hung beside her.

No medical team was fighting to keep her alive.

She reached for a plastic cup and drank water.

I stared.

My first feeling was relief.

A foolish, enormous relief.

She was alive.

She was sitting up.

She looked like herself.

Then I noticed Travis.

He was standing beside her bed, talking to a man wearing a white coat.

The man's badge identified him as Dr. Thorne.

I expected to hear them discussing medication.

Perhaps a test result.

Perhaps the next step in her care.

Instead, I heard the doctor ask whether the money had been arranged.

Travis answered without hesitation.

“Don't worry about Shannon. She'll cover what we need.”

Dr. Thorne lowered his voice.

“This isn't a small thing we're doing.”

My brother gave a short laugh.

“You've already agreed.”

“Agreeing to help doesn't mean I want to lose my license.”

I felt Sheila move beside me.

She did not look surprised.

She kept watching the room.

Dr. Thorne tapped a pen against the paperwork in his hand.

“We're putting a cardiac emergency into an official patient record. If someone checks the original assessment, there will be questions.”

Travis shrugged.

“Nobody's going to check anything. My sister just wants Mom alive.”

I stopped breathing for a moment.

A cardiac emergency.

Putting it into a record.

Not treating it.

Creating it.

I looked at my mother again.

She was watching the men talk as though they were discussing a restaurant reservation.

Then she set down her cup.

“I hope you haven't forgotten what I get out of this.”

Travis turned toward her.

“You'll get your share.”

“I'd better.
