I tried to avoid topics that upset her. I acted grateful even when she made me uncomfortable.”

Naomi listened.

“And the whole time, I told myself it was temporary.”

I swallowed.

“Once she knew me, things would improve.”

That had been my excuse.

At first, I thought Margaret simply needed time.

Then I thought she needed proof that I loved Ethan.

Then I thought perhaps she would become kinder when we had children.

That last belief hurt to remember.

I had imagined motherhood changing my relationship with her.

I had imagined her looking at a grandchild and finally seeing me as part of the family.

I had not realized how much hope I had attached to that possibility.

Three fertility treatments.

Two miscarriages.

I could say the numbers.

I could write them.

But the numbers did not describe the quiet moments afterward.

The way I avoided certain conversations.

The way I struggled to answer ordinary questions.

The way Ethan and I sometimes sat together without knowing what to say.

I remembered believing those losses had brought us closer.

Maybe they had, for a while.

I could not deny that he had held me when I cried.

I remembered his arms around me.

I remembered wanting to believe we were still facing life together.

Then came the distance.

The explanations.

Vanessa.

Six months earlier, I had found the messages that made the situation impossible to misunderstand.

Even then, part of me wanted an explanation that would make the marriage salvageable.

Looking back, I think I was mourning the marriage before I admitted it was over.

Naomi gently moved the trust agreement toward me.

“Claire.”

I looked up.

“You don't have to solve seven years of marriage this afternoon.”

I almost smiled.

“I know.”

“Just stay with what's in front of you.”

I nodded.

She was right.

The memories mattered.

But they could take over everything if I let them.

I returned to the document.

Harold Brennan, Esq.

Trustee.

Claire Whitmore, née Sullivan.

Successor trustee and sole beneficiary.

I read the names again.

The words had not changed.

My emotional state did not change them either.

That was reassuring.

Naomi had been careful throughout our work together.

She never encouraged me to invent motives.

She never treated suspicion as evidence.

When I told her something Margaret had said, Naomi wanted to know when and where.

When I described an incident with Ethan, she asked what I had actually witnessed.

At first, I found her questions difficult.

I wanted her to understand how I felt.

She did understand.

But she also knew that feelings alone would not establish what the documents said.

I had learned to appreciate that discipline.

It kept me grounded.

It kept me from turning every painful memory into an accusation I couldn't support.

And it meant that when Naomi told me something mattered, I trusted her.

I rested my fingers beside the trust agreement.

“Harold Brennan is the trustee named here.”

Naomi nodded.

“Yes.”

“And I'm named to succeed him.”

“Yes.”

“And the agreement identifies me as the only beneficiary.”

She nodded again.

“That's what it states.”

I sat back.

I had spent years hearing Margaret speak about the property as though no one could possibly question her authority.

She had never mentioned those provisions to me while ordering me around.

She had never behaved as though my name appeared in any important document concerning the home.

Instead, she treated me as though I needed her approval to occupy a room.

I remembered the downstairs powder room.

The running water.

My face after I stopped crying.

The notebook open in front of me.

That was where things had begun to change.

I hadn't known anything about how the divorce would end.

I hadn't known how important the property records would become.

I only knew I could no longer trust the version of events I was being given.

So I started writing.

The notebook had nearly filled during the two years that followed.

Some entries were brief.

Some were longer.

There were dates when I had written only enough to remind myself of a particular incident.

Other pages contained details I knew I would forget if I didn't record them.

I wasn't proud of needing that notebook.

For a long time, it felt like an admission that my own memory wasn't enough.

Now I understood it differently.

I had needed somewhere to place the facts where they could not be interrupted.

On paper, Margaret couldn't talk over me.

Ethan couldn't ask me to let something go.

No one could insist I was exaggerating before I finished the sentence.

The page simply remained there.

Naomi glanced at the notebook.

“You brought it.”

“I always do.”

She smiled faintly.

“I know.”

I opened the cover.

The first dated entry was still there.

I looked at it without reading the details aloud.

I remembered who I had been when I wrote it.

Frightened.

Exhausted.

Ashamed that I hadn't found a way to make the marriage work.

I wanted to tell that earlier version of myself something.

Not that everything would become easy.

It wouldn't.

Not that Ethan would finally understand.

I no longer expected that.

I wanted to tell her that she was allowed to believe what she saw.

That was all.

I closed the notebook.

Naomi didn't ask me to explain.

She understood.

I looked at the time.

The day had advanced while we talked.

In Greenwich, the celebration preparations would be moving closer to completion.

Margaret had described the arrangements with such pride that I could picture her overseeing everything.

The orchestra.

The flowers.

The catering.

The guests.

Eight hundred thousand dollars.

The figure still made me uneasy.

It was difficult to understand why anyone would spend that much money celebrating a relationship that had begun before my marriage ended.

But I knew Margaret.

She liked grand gestures when they reflected well on her.

She liked occasions where people could admire what the Whitmores possessed.

And she liked being the person who decided who deserved to stand beside her.

That evening, she intended Vanessa to occupy the place I had once held.

I was not going to argue about that.

Vanessa was pregnant.

Ethan had made his choices.

I couldn't reverse them.

I didn't want to.

The marriage was over.

The divorce papers had been signed.

There was nothing left to negotiate about affection.

But the house was different.

The house was not a feeling.

It was property.

Its ownership was not determined by who wore the most expensive jewelry or who gave the loudest instructions.

It was determined by documents.

And those documents were lying in front of me.

I looked at Naomi.

“I need to ask something.”

“Go ahead.”

“What if Margaret simply refuses to listen?”

Naomi considered the question.

“Then don't turn it into an argument.”

I nodded.

I had expected that answer.

She continued.

“You can't make someone understand something by repeating yourself until they agree.”

I thought about seven years of marriage.

“No,” I said. “You can't.”

Naomi tapped the page.

“Stay with what you can establish.”

I looked down.

The recorded deed.

The trust agreement.

The names.

The address.

Those were the things I could establish.

Not Margaret's intentions.

Not Ethan's private thoughts.

Not what Vanessa believed.

Only what the documents actually contained.

That felt manageable.

I was tired of guessing what other people might do.

I was tired of rehearsing conversations.

I wanted to be precise.

I wanted to act like someone who trusted the evidence in front of her.

Naomi gathered the documents again.

This time, I watched without feeling the need to ask whether we should stop.

The decision to attend the evening celebration had settled inside me.

I wasn't excited.

I wasn't eager to see Ethan beside Vanessa.

The thought still hurt.

But I no longer wanted to avoid the house simply because Margaret had ordered me to stay away.

Naomi looked at me.

“Are you certain?”

I thought about the question.

There was a time when I would have answered immediately.

I would have said yes because I wanted her to think I was brave.

But bravery wasn't the point.

I considered what going back would mean.

I would see people celebrating Ethan's new life.

I would hear Margaret speak about the family.

I would probably feel the same shame she had tried to give me that morning.

But I would also have the chance to put the actual property records in front of them.

Not a memory.

Not an accusation.

A record.

I looked at Naomi.

“Yes.”

She nodded.

No congratulations.

No dramatic speech.

She simply accepted my answer.

I appreciated that more than I could explain.

For years, every decision I made had seemed to require someone's approval.

Now my attorney was treating my decision as mine.

I looked once more at the name on the trust agreement.

Claire Whitmore, née Sullivan.

Then I closed the notebook and placed it back in my handbag.

I was still frightened.

But I was no longer confused about why I intended to return.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Thought Going Back Would Be About Confronting Margaret, Until I Understood
