I'm all right.”

He nodded.

He placed the tissues within reach anyway.

I looked down at my hands.

They were resting on my handbag.

I could feel the familiar outline of the spiral notebook beneath the material.

That notebook had become one of the few things I trusted.

It wasn't remarkable.

The cover was plain.

The pages were almost filled.

Anyone opening it without knowing me might have thought it was a collection of ordinary notes.

But I knew what every page represented.

I remembered the first one.

Two years earlier.

I had been inside the downstairs powder room.

The faucet was running.

I had turned it on because I didn't want anyone outside to hear me crying.

I cannot remember every word that had been said that day.

What I remember is the feeling afterward.

That heavy certainty that I could no longer keep living the same way.

I remember looking at myself and feeling embarrassed by how hard I was trying to be acceptable to people who had already decided I wasn't.

I remember being angry with Ethan.

Then being angry with myself for still expecting him to intervene.

Mostly, I remember being tired.

My face was wet.

My ribs hurt from crying.

I stayed there until I thought I could walk through the hallway without anyone noticing.

Then I washed my face.

I dried my hands.

I took out a notebook.

I wrote the date.

That was all I could manage at first.

A date.

A few details.

Words that would remind me later of what had actually happened.

It was not a dramatic decision.

I did not know how much those pages would come to matter.

I only knew I was frightened by how often I began doubting my own memory.

When Margaret insulted me, Ethan would sometimes say I had misunderstood her intention.

When she interfered in our finances, he would describe it as concern.

When she entered our bedroom without knocking, I was expected to accept that she was comfortable in her son's home.

Comfortable.

That was the word.

I spent years feeling uncomfortable so Margaret could remain comfortable.

And whenever I objected, I somehow became the problem.

The first few pages of the notebook were difficult to write.

I kept wanting to excuse people.

Margaret had probably been upset.

Ethan had been under pressure.

Perhaps I should not have taken the remark personally.

Perhaps I should have waited before responding.

That was how I had survived the marriage.

By creating explanations that made other people's behavior easier to live with.

But the notebook did not require explanations.

It needed facts.

Dates.

Actions.

Words I could remember.

So I learned to write those down.

After a while, I noticed something.

When I stopped explaining Margaret's behavior away, the pattern became much easier to see.

The insults were not accidents.

The financial interference was not occasional.

Ethan's silence was not confusion.

It was a choice he made repeatedly.

Once I understood that, I could no longer pretend our marriage had one isolated problem we might eventually solve.

The problem was the way we lived.

And the way I was expected to accept it.

I didn't tell Margaret about the notebook.

I didn't tell Ethan.

There was no point.

I had spent enough time explaining myself to people who treated explanations as invitations to argue.

Instead, I kept the notebook close.

I continued living in the house.

I attended to the ordinary parts of my days.

I listened when people spoke.

I learned to recognize the difference between a promise and a fact.

And eventually, I found someone who was willing to examine the facts without asking me to be nicer about them.

Naomi Reyes.

I looked at the message on my phone again.

Naomi had known me for two years.

She had seen me frightened.

She had seen me furious.

She had seen me trying to make decisions while still worrying about how Margaret would react.

Naomi did not share that worry.

That had been one of the first things I admired about her.

She did not seem impressed by the Whitmore name.

She did not treat the mansion as proof that the people living inside it must be right.

She asked questions.

Then she examined the answers.

There were moments when I found that uncomfortable.

I had become accustomed to choosing whatever answer created the least trouble.

Naomi was interested in what was true.

At first, those seemed like different things.

Eventually, I understood how much I needed someone who would not confuse them.

The taxi moved forward again.

I looked through the window.

The morning was continuing without any sign that something enormous had happened in my life.

People were walking.

Cars were stopping and starting.

Shops were open.

The ordinary world had not rearranged itself to acknowledge my divorce.

That was strangely comforting.

I had spent so long living inside the Whitmore family's rules that I had forgotten there were places where their opinions had no authority.

A traffic light did not care who Margaret was.

The taxi driver did not care whether Ethan approved of me.

The road continued in the direction we were going.

I could leave.

It sounds simple now.

At the time, it was a thought I had to repeat.

I could leave.

And I had.

That did not erase the hurt.

I still saw Ethan standing on the steps whenever I closed my eyes.

I still heard Margaret announcing Vanessa's pregnancy.

I still remembered the years when I had hoped to become a mother.

Some wounds don't disappear because you finally understand who caused them.

The understanding only stops you from expecting the same people to heal them.

I looked down at my wedding hand.

There was no ring there now.

Ethan and I had signed the final papers that morning.

The legal part was finished.

That fact felt less like freedom than I had imagined.

I was free.

I was also exhausted.

Both things could be true.

My phone remained warm in my hand.

I read Naomi's message once more.

Then I locked the screen.

The words were enough.

I did not need to send a reply while sitting in the taxi.

We already knew what came next.

Naomi had prepared me for the possibility that Margaret would act quickly once the divorce was final.

I had not known precisely what form that would take.

Suitcases on the sidewalk had been crueler than I expected.

The celebration was another matter.

That was something I had not anticipated hearing about in quite that way.

Eight hundred thousand dollars.

More than a hundred guests.

An orchestra.

Specially imported flowers.

A woman carrying Ethan's child.

I pictured Margaret walking through the house, satisfied with every detail.

I pictured her giving instructions with the confidence she had always possessed.

She would believe she controlled the occasion.

She would believe her word determined who belonged at Linden Lane.

And she would assume I was somewhere far away, too humiliated to return.

I felt no need to correct that assumption yet.

The taxi continued toward Stamford.

Naomi's office was above a bakery.

I had always found that arrangement oddly funny.

The attorney who had helped me understand the most serious decisions of my life worked in a building that smelled of freshly baked cinnamon rolls.

It was such an ordinary place.

No grand entrance.

No family crest.

No marble staircase arranged to remind visitors that they were less important than the people inside.

Just an office where I could sit, ask questions, and receive straight answers.

As we approached, I felt myself relax for the first time that morning.

Not completely.

I wasn't capable of that yet.

But enough to notice.

The taxi stopped.

I put my phone away.

Then I opened the door.

I stepped out carrying the same handbag I had held outside the mansion.

The notebook was still inside.

And upstairs, Naomi was waiting with the documents that would finally explain why Margaret's certainty was misplaced.

Click here to continue reading: PART
