If a judge ever sees you helping her scare Lily, you are finished.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan almost laughed from the bitter precision of it.<\/p>\n<p>Claire had been warned.<\/p>\n<p>Not after.<\/p>\n<p>Before.<\/p>\n<p>By someone helping her prepare the divorce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Claire answer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kim read it.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s under control.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Every time Claire had claimed things went too far unexpectedly, another piece of evidence showed she had been warned before they did.<\/p>\n<p>Kim continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one final exchange.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight minutes before your doorbell alert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan opened his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Claire send?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe red fuel can on the kitchen floor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan gripped the counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Rachel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kim\u2019s voice became quieter.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote: Call me now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Claire?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Rachel call her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswered?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Claire had not stumbled blindly into Meredith\u2019s escalation.<\/p>\n<p>She had photographed the warning sign.<\/p>\n<p>Sent it to someone knowledgeable.<\/p>\n<p>Received immediate attempts to intervene.<\/p>\n<p>And ignored them.<\/p>\n<p>Then another fact arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel called Ridgeway police,\u201d Kim said.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore Mrs. Alvarez.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His pulse changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she report?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA child might be subjected to an unsafe family confrontation at your address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why weren\u2019t officers there sooner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did not know Lily\u2019s full name, your exact house number, or whether the confrontation had started.
