5 – We Finally Had a Mountain Cabin to Call Home, but I Still Had to Make It Safe for My Children

The first thing Ben wanted to know was where he could put his shoes.

Not whether the cabin was ours.

Not whether it was safe.

Just where his shoes belonged.

I was standing in the downstairs bedroom with a broom in my hand when he asked.

I looked at the muddy sneakers he was holding.

Then at the empty closet beside the wall.

"Wherever you want."

He looked uncertain.

"Even in there?"

"Especially in there."

He opened the closet.

Set his shoes inside.

Closed the door.

Then opened it again to check.

I pretended not to notice.

That was the moment I realized how much living in our car had changed him.

For forty-three days, everything we owned had needed to stay within reach.

Shoes beside the seat.

Blankets folded before sunrise.

Food packed into grocery bags.

Nothing could be left behind.

Now Ben had a closet.

And he didn't quite believe he was allowed to use it.

I went back to sweeping.

I had to keep my hands busy.

Otherwise I would have cried in front of him.

We still couldn't move into the cabin properly.

The electrician had warned me about the wiring.

The old stove needed attention.

Some windows wouldn't close.

And although the spring produced clear water, I wanted it tested before the children drank it.

The house was ours.

That didn't mean it was ready.

I learned that difference quickly.

Mara helped me find people willing to inspect the most urgent problems without charging more than I could afford.

Eli came by after finishing his survey work.

He brought a length of stove pipe that he said might fit the old installation.

I offered to pay him.

He shook his head.

"See if it works first."

I tried to thank him again.

He was already walking toward the workshop.

Eli wasn't interested in long speeches.

I liked that about him.

A church in town donated two mattresses.

They arrived wrapped in plastic.

Ben asked whether they were new.

I told him they were new to us.

He ran his hand over one.

"Nobody else sleeps on these?"

"Not anymore."

He seemed satisfied.

Lily chose the upstairs bedroom with a view toward the ridge.

She spent an entire afternoon wiping dust from the windowsill.

Then she arranged her few books in a row.

I found her sitting on the floor, studying the empty wall.

"What are you doing?"

"Thinking about where a desk could go."

I looked at the room.

A desk seemed like an impossible luxury.

But I didn't say that.

"We'll find one."

She nodded.

Then she asked whether I meant it.

I understood the question.

I'd made so many promises since Eric died.

Some I had kept.

Others had depended on money or circumstances I couldn't control.

"I mean it."

She looked at me for another moment.

Then she went back to cleaning.

I used almost everything I had left to make the downstairs bedroom and kitchen usable.

We repaired the worst window.

Checked the stove.

Cleared the chimney.

Cleaned the old pipes.

A retired electrician from town helped install a small solar battery setup at cost.

It wasn't enough to run a modern household.

But it gave us a few lights.

We could charge our phones.

The difference was enormous.

The first time Ben flipped a switch and a light came on, he laughed.

Then he switched it off.

And on again.

I let him do it until Lily complained.

For dinner that night, we ate soup at Walter's oak table.

Not motel food balanced on our knees.

Not sandwiches eaten inside the car.

Soup in bowls.

Bread on plates.

I had forgotten how much I missed washing dishes afterward.

The kitchen was still cold.

The floorboards creaked.

I could see my breath near the back door.

But nobody had to ask where we were going when we finished eating.

After dinner, Lily helped carry blankets upstairs.

Ben followed with his pillow.

He stopped halfway up the staircase.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Are we staying tomorrow too?"

I gripped the railing.

"Yes."

"And after that?"

"Yes."

He considered my answer.

Then continued climbing.

I stood there longer than I needed to.

That night, when I checked on him, his shoes were inside the closet.

Both of them.

He was asleep with one hand beneath his cheek.

Lily had already arranged her books beside her mattress.

I turned off the small lamp.

Then I went downstairs.

The cabin was quiet.

There was a soft ticking sound from the stove.

Outside, the wind moved through the trees.

I sat at the kitchen table and opened Walter's ledger.

I hadn't forgotten Dean Harrow.

I hadn't forgotten the forged deeds.

And I certainly hadn't forgotten Thomas Bennett.

The cabin had given my children somewhere to sleep.

But the papers in the steel room were the reason someone had tried to buy that home before I could see it.

I couldn't ignore them.

I spread the ledger beneath the lamp.

The pages were fragile but carefully organized.

Walter had used dates, initials and brief descriptions.

Some entries looked ordinary.

Timber measurements.

Boundary repairs.

Expenses.

Others were harder to explain.

There were payments beside names of county officials.

Amounts that seemed unusually large for the time.

And repeated references to Charles Harrow.

I went through the entries slowly.

Then I reached November 1948.

I stopped turning pages.

One date caught my attention.

November 17.

The day before Thomas Bennett disappeared.

Walter had written that Thomas had located an original ridge map inside the Harrow office.

Charles Harrow knew about it.

Another entry recorded six hundred dollars paid to someone identified only as R.C.

Below that, Walter had written that Thomas intended to take a copy to a federal official the following day.

I sat back.

Thomas hadn't simply been gathering rumors.

He had found something important enough to take outside the county.

I turned the page.

There was another note.

If Thomas failed to return, Walter had written, someone should inspect the mine house.

I read those words twice.

Mine house.

I'd been all through the cabin.

The workshop.

The cellar.

The surrounding yard.

I hadn't seen a mine house.

I took out the old map.

There were markings scattered across the western slope.

Some showed trails.

Others identified old structures.

But the handwriting was difficult to read.

I held the page closer to the lamp.

Then I remembered Eli mentioning abandoned mining operations throughout the mountains.

I picked up my phone.

It was late.

I decided to call him in the morning.

I continued reading the ledger.

The entries after Thomas disappeared were different.

Shorter.

More guarded.

Walter had written about taxes and county filings.

He had also recorded visits from men whose names he didn't always include.

I wondered whether he had been afraid to put certain things on paper.

Then I remembered what he had done with the room.

He had sealed it.

Not destroyed the documents.

Not buried them.

He had kept everything exactly where it could be found someday.

I touched the brass key lying beside the ledger.

I thought about my childhood visits to Walter's house.

How he would sit silently at the table.

How he never answered questions about Black Ridge.

I used to think he was simply difficult.

Maybe he was.

But now I wondered how much of his silence had been fear.

The next morning, I called Eli.

I asked whether there had ever been mining activity on Black Ridge.

He said there had been small operations all through that region.

Mica.

Feldspar.

Some copper exploration.

Nothing unusual.

I told him Walter had mentioned a mine house.

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he asked where I'd found the reference.

"In his ledger."

"What date?"

"November 1948."

He asked me to read the entire entry.

I did.

When I finished, he said he knew of an old road on the western slope.

It had collapsed in places.

He wasn't certain what structures remained.

I asked whether we could look.

He said we could try.

Then he asked whether Mara knew what I was doing.

I told him I'd call her.

He said that would be wise.

I didn't argue.

By then, I'd learned that the people helping me were often more cautious than I wanted to be.

And usually for good reason.

I called Mara and explained the ledger entry.

She asked me not to go alone.

I promised I wouldn't.

She also said we should notify law enforcement about the historical documents and Dean's behavior.

I hesitated.

Part of me worried nobody would take the story seriously.

A homeless widow inherits a cabin.

Finds old maps.

Claims a wealthy developer is trying to pressure her.

It sounded like something people might dismiss.

Mara didn't dismiss it.

She reminded me that Dean's threats had been recorded.

The land records existed.

And the county employee had appeared almost immediately after I arrived.

We weren't asking anyone to believe a ghost story.

We were asking them to examine evidence.

That afternoon, Eli arrived at the cabin with a man named Noah Pierce.

Noah was a deputy sheriff.

He was thirty-nine and had grown up a couple of counties away.

He didn't ask me how frightened I was.

He didn't tell me to calm down.

He asked to see Walter's ledger.

I brought it from the archive.

He studied the relevant page.

Then he asked whether I'd photographed the original position of the book.

I said yes.

He nodded.

"Good."

I showed him the note about Thomas.

He asked what I knew about the disappearance.

I told him what the family had always believed.

Thomas had gone into the mountains.

His truck had been found near a damaged logging road.

His body was never recovered.

Noah wrote that down.

Then he asked whether anyone had searched the mine house at the time.

I said I didn't know.

He looked at Eli.

Eli shrugged.

"If it's the place I'm thinking of, there isn't much left."

Noah closed his notebook.

"Then we'll start there."

I went upstairs to tell Lily and Ben that I was leaving for a few hours.

Janet had agreed to watch them again.

Ben wanted to come.

I told him this wasn't a family outing.

He looked disappointed.

Then he asked whether we were searching for treasure.

I smiled despite myself.

"Not the kind you're thinking of."

He asked whether we might find gold.

I told him I doubted it.

Lily watched me from the doorway.

She didn't ask where we were going.

She asked whether I had my phone.

I showed it to her.

Then she asked whether it was charged.

I checked.

It was.

"Call when you're finished."

"I will."

She nodded.

I wanted to tell her there was nothing to worry about.

But I couldn't honestly promise that.

So I hugged her instead.

When I came downstairs, Noah and Eli were waiting near the porch.

The afternoon light had begun to fade behind the ridge.

Eli had his map.

Noah carried a flashlight.

I had Walter's copied notes in my backpack.

We started toward the western slope.

For the first time since opening the steel room, I wasn't searching through my grandfather's past alone.

Source:
