A paramedic knelt beside her, checking the red marks around her upper arm. Detective Kim sat several feet away, deliberately low in an armchair rather than towering over her. Lily looked toward the doorway again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaddy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan stopped six feet from her.<\/p>\n<p>Every part of him wanted to cross the room and pull her against his chest, but Marcus\u2019s warning returned with unexpected force. Lily first. What she needed first, not what he needed.<\/p>\n<p>He lowered himself onto one knee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily stared at him for half a second before the blanket slipped from her shoulders and she ran.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan opened his arms.<\/p>\n<p>She struck his chest with enough force to rock him backward. He caught her carefully, avoiding the arm the paramedic had been examining, and Lily buried her face against his uniform. Her entire body shook. Nathan closed one arm around her shoulders and placed his other hand lightly behind her head, then immediately moved it when she flinched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You don\u2019t have to say that. I won\u2019t touch your head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily tightened her grip around his neck.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds Nathan heard nothing except her breathing and the rain tapping against the front windows. Officers moved quietly through the house. Somewhere near the kitchen, a camera shutter clicked as evidence technicians photographed something. None of it mattered while Lily remained in his arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came as fast as I could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma said you couldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you were too far away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan pulled back enough to see her face.<\/p>\n<p>There was a faint red line near her hairline and a darker mark beginning along her upper arm. Her cheeks were blotchy from crying. One pajama leg was still damp below the knee. Somebody had given her thick hospital socks, pale blue with rubber grips beneath them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was far away,\u201d Nathan said. \u201cBut you did exactly what you were supposed to do. You tried to get help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t get out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI almost got to Mrs. Alvarez.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan glanced toward Detective Kim.<\/p>\n<p>She did not interrupt.<\/p>\n<p>The paramedic quietly said, \u201cColonel, I still want her evaluated at the pediatric emergency department. Nothing I\u2019m seeing suggests immediate life-threatening injury, but there\u2019s scalp tenderness, bruising, and significant stress exposure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever she needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily pulled at Nathan\u2019s sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo I have to go alone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you coming?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan felt the smallest part of her body unclench.<\/p>\n<p>From the hallway came a woman\u2019s raised voice.<\/p>\n<p>Claire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is insane. Nathan walks in wearing a uniform and suddenly everyone treats him like some kind of authority over the rest of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily went rigid.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan saw it happen before Claire even entered the room.<\/p>\n<p>Her hands locked around his sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Kim stood immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Cole, you were told to remain in the dining room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire appeared at the hallway entrance with an officer beside her. Her hair was disordered and her face was pale with anger rather than fear.<\/p>\n<p>The instant she saw Nathan holding Lily, something hard passed through her expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNathan, tell these people to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan did not answer her.<\/p>\n<p>He looked down at Lily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want your mother in this room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily\u2019s fingers tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Kim moved between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe answered the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m her mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd right now she has asked not to have you in the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked past the detective directly at Nathan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan still did not respond.<\/p>\n<p>The officer guided Claire away.<\/p>\n<p>Only after the hallway became quiet again did Lily release the breath she had been holding.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan sat beside her on the sofa.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Kim waited until Lily looked toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLily, before your dad came in, you told me something happened before you ran out the front door. You do not have to explain it right now if you\u2019re tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily glanced at Nathan.<\/p>\n<p>He kept his face neutral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can tell her if you want,\u201d he said. \u201cOr you can wait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily rubbed her thumb along the seam of the blanket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma found my other phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan\u2019s stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe old one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hid it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my backpack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan did not ask why.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Kim did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you feel like you needed to hide it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked toward the hallway before answering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom takes my tablet when Dad goes away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan remained still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time?\u201d Detective Kim asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot every time. Mostly when Grandma comes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily shrugged, but the movement looked practiced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom says I call Dad too much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan stared at the floorboards because looking at Claire\u2019s family photographs on the wall suddenly felt impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Kim continued gently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened tonight after your grandmother found the phone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily rubbed her palm against the blanket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked who I was going to tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell about what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat they were having the lesson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan looked up.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Kim\u2019s voice stayed carefully even.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat lesson?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily\u2019s eyes moved to Nathan again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom said I had to learn that Dad can\u2019t fix everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan felt the room narrow around him.<\/p>\n<p>He did not speak.<\/p>\n<p>Lily continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said I act like I\u2019m better than everybody because you always believe me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do believe you,\u201d Nathan said quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Lily\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why they get mad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something inside Nathan shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Not explosively.<\/p>\n<p>More dangerously than that.<\/p>\n<p>He finally understood that the bond he had always considered one of the safest parts of Lily\u2019s life had been turned against her when he was absent.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Kim asked, \u201cWho said they were having a lesson?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom first. Then Grandma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they tell you would happen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily\u2019s lower lip trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey brought the red gas thing from the garage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan had to remind himself to breathe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say was in it?\u201d Detective Kim asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective\u2019s eyes flicked briefly toward the evidence technician in the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Lily continued before anyone could interrupt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrooke said maybe if I was scared enough, I\u2019d stop talking back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan closed his hand around the edge of the sofa cushion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see anybody light anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma had matches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan\u2019s gaze snapped to Detective Kim.<\/p>\n<p>The detective\u2019s expression changed almost imperceptibly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you see the matches?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the kitchen table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid anyone pick them up?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan felt blood pounding behind his ears.<\/p>\n<p>Lily spoke faster now, as though getting the words out before someone could stop her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom said nobody was really going to do anything, but Grandma said I didn\u2019t know that. Then Vanessa laughed. And Erin said they should film me because I always act brave when Dad is around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan looked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>He could hear Grace in his memory: Do not make this about punishing Claire.<\/p>\n<p>It took everything he had to remain where he was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened next?\u201d Detective Kim asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to get outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo go to Mrs. Alvarez.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid anyone stop you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma grabbed me in the hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily touched the back of her head, then quickly lowered her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got away once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s when you reached the driveway?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe camera told Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes the little blue light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had installed that camera himself.<\/p>\n<p>Until tonight, he had never imagined that tiny indicator would become something his daughter recognized as a lifeline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe blue light came on,\u201d Lily said, \u201cso I thought maybe you would see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan\u2019s throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily leaned against him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew you would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then an evidence technician entered carrying a clear bag.<\/p>\n<p>Inside it was a small cardboard matchbox.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKitchen table,\u201d the technician said.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Kim stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBag it with the other items.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The technician nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan looked toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat other items?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kim hesitated, then answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA utility lighter was recovered from the kitchen counter. We also recovered the red container from the garage area and a second bottle from the driveway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily\u2019s face disappeared against Nathan\u2019s arm.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped asking questions.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>The detective seemed to understand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColonel, I\u2019m going to have another specialist conduct any detailed child interview. I don\u2019t want Lily repeating this more than necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight is about safety and medical evaluation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan nodded.<\/p>\n<p>An officer appeared at the doorway and quietly asked Kim to step outside.<\/p>\n<p>The detective returned less than a minute later.<\/p>\n<p>Her demeanor had changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColonel Cole, I need a word with you away from Lily when you\u2019re ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan looked at his daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not leaving her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t need to. I can wait until the ambulance transport is arranged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kim crouched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s grown-up paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily studied her suspiciously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdults always say that when it\u2019s bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Kim did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily tugged the blanket tighter.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan remained beside her while paramedics finished their assessment. When they brought a wheelchair, Lily initially refused it until Nathan explained that the ride was not because she was weak or badly hurt.
