15 – While Lily Wore Her Grandfather’s Old Santa Hat, My Son Finally Spoke About the Day He Thought He Had Disappointed His Father

Lily stood beside the Christmas tree with Walter's hat pulled down over her ears.

She looked very serious.

That made us laugh.

Walter always tried to look serious before handing out presents.

It was part of his act.

He would clear his throat.

Raise one hand.

Then announce a name as though the person were skating into a crowded hockey arena.

Lily had copied every detail she could remember.

I watched her straighten her shoulders.

Then she picked up the first gift.

Her voice dropped as low as she could manage.

She announced Noah's name with great ceremony.

Noah jumped up.

Everyone laughed.

I felt a familiar warmth in my chest.

Walter had started that tradition long before the grandchildren were born.

When Adam was little, he loved it.

Then he became a teenager and pretended to be embarrassed.

But he always smiled.

Later, when Lily and Noah came along, Walter became even more enthusiastic.

He made the announcements longer.

He invented silly introductions.

Sometimes he forgot whose present he was holding.

That only made the children laugh harder.

Now Lily was doing the same thing.

She was ten.

Her voice wasn't deep.

Her hat was too large.

But she had inherited her grandfather's determination to make people smile.

I loved watching her.

After Noah opened his gift, she reached for another.

This time she announced Patricia.

Patricia laughed so hard she covered her mouth.

Then Lily introduced Renee.

Adam.

Me.

Every name received a dramatic announcement.

Every present became an event.

The children were delighted.

I looked at Walter's empty chair.

For a moment, I felt the ache of missing him.

Then Lily said something so ridiculous that I laughed again.

Grief and happiness can live beside each other.

I had learned that slowly.

The year Walter died, I thought I would never enjoy Christmas in the same way again.

I was right.

It wasn't the same.

But that didn't mean it couldn't be good.

I looked at Lily.

She was enjoying herself too much to notice my tears.

I was glad.

I didn't want her to think remembering Grandpa had to be sad.

There was room for laughter.

Walter would have insisted on it.

When the presents were finished, the living room looked like every family living room after Christmas.

Wrapping paper everywhere.

Ribbon on the floor.

Boxes leaning against chairs.

Noah examining one of his new things.

Lily still wearing the hat.

Adam settled onto the couch beside me.

He looked tired.

It had been a long day.

We'd volunteered at Westdale.

Prepared dinner.

Eaten.

Opened presents.

And talked more than we usually did.

I was tired too.

But I didn't want the day to end.

Adam leaned back.

Then he looked toward the shelf where I kept family photographs.

His eyes settled on a picture of Walter.

I noticed.

He was quiet for a while.

Then he asked whether I remembered the Christmas when he'd received his first pair of hockey skates.

I smiled.

Of course I remembered.

Walter had been more excited about those skates than Adam.

He spent days talking about them.

He wanted to make sure they fit properly.

He explained how to care for them.

Then he insisted on taking Adam to try them.

I laughed as I remembered.

"Your father could turn anything about hockey into a major event."

Adam smiled.

"He really could."

He looked toward Lily.

She was helping Noah gather wrapping paper.

Then he lowered his voice.

"I've been thinking about that puck again."

I nodded.

The black puck.

White tape.

Walter's handwriting.

February 17, 2002.

Adam's first goal.

I had kept it when I sold the rest of Walter's collection.

At the time, I knew it mattered.

I didn't realize how much.

When Adam opened the shoebox the previous Christmas, he looked stunned.

He had thought his father was disappointed when he stopped playing hockey.

He hadn't known Walter had kept those things near the front of his favorite binder.

Now Adam had taken the team photograph to Westdale.

It hung beside Walter's volunteer picture.

I looked at him.

"I'm glad you kept those things."

He nodded.

Then he said he'd been thinking about how little he understood his father when he was young.

I listened.

He explained that when he stopped playing hockey at eleven, he felt he'd let Walter down.

He knew his father loved the sport.

He knew Walter enjoyed coaching.

And he thought quitting meant rejecting something important to him.

I remembered that period.

Adam had been frustrated with hockey.

Walter had been quiet afterward.

Neither of them knew how to discuss the disappointment.

I had tried to reassure them.

But I hadn't fully understood how much the misunderstanding stayed with Adam.

Now he was an adult.

He had children of his own.

And he was still thinking about what his father might have felt.

I touched his hand.

"Your father loved you whether you played hockey or not."

Adam nodded.

"I know that now."

He looked toward the tree.

Then he admitted that seeing the puck had changed something for him.

He no longer remembered that period only as the time he disappointed Walter.

He remembered the goal.

The photograph.

The pride on his father's face.

And the fact that Walter had saved those things for more than twenty years.

I smiled.

Walter had never been especially good at explaining feelings.

But he had been good at keeping things that mattered.

The collection was proof of that.

Every item carried a memory.

But the puck and photograph were different.

They weren't important because of famous players.

They mattered because of Adam.

I told him that.

He looked down.

Then he smiled.

"I wish I'd asked him."

I knew what he meant.

He wished he'd asked Walter whether he was disappointed.

Whether he was proud.

Whether quitting hockey had changed anything.

I wished they'd talked too.

But we couldn't go back.

We could only understand what had happened.

I told Adam something I'd been thinking about since Christmas.

Walter had been proud of him in ways that had nothing to do with sports.

He loved seeing Adam grow.

He loved watching him become a father.

He loved the children.

And he cared about the man Adam was becoming.

Adam listened.

Then he looked toward the dining room.

Renee was talking with Patricia.

He smiled.

"I think Dad would like what we're doing now."

I nodded.

"Volunteering?"

"All of it."

I waited.

He looked at me.

"The way we're talking. Helping each other. Not hiding everything."

I felt my eyes fill.

He was right.

Walter had always believed family should be a place where people could ask for help.

He wouldn't have liked what happened the previous Christmas.

He would have been hurt by the way I was excluded.

He would have been disappointed that Adam and Renee didn't tell me the truth.

And he would have worried about Patricia.

But I believed he would have been glad to see how we'd changed.

I told Adam that.

He nodded.

Then he looked down at his hands.

For a moment, I thought he might cry.

He didn't.

Instead, he reached for my hand.

We sat quietly.

Across the room, Lily was still wearing Walter's hat.

She had taken off the presents' ribbons and was arranging them in a pile.

Noah had fallen asleep against the couch.

Renee came over.

She asked whether we needed anything.

I shook my head.

Adam smiled at her.

She sat beside him.

Patricia joined us a moment later.

The living room became quiet.

It was the kind of quiet that comes after a long, good day.

Not the silence I remembered from the first Christmas after Walter died.

That silence had felt empty.

This one felt peaceful.

I looked at my family.

There were things we still needed to learn.

Adam and Renee were continuing to save for a house.

Patricia was rebuilding her finances.

I was learning how to live without Walter.

None of those things would be finished quickly.

But I no longer felt as though we were all facing them separately.

I thought about Westdale.

The center had brought us together in ways I hadn't expected.

Walter's donation.

Patricia's assistance.

Kayla's gratitude.

Adam's volunteer work.

And the old gray cabinet.

The cabinet was still being used.

Its door closed properly because Adam had repaired it.

The label carried Walter's name.

And mine.

I smiled at that.

Walter had left us much more than the things I sold.

He left us habits.

Memories.

And an example of how to treat people.

I looked at Lily.

She was adjusting the Santa hat again.

It slipped over one eye.

She laughed.

Then she asked whether she could wear it next Christmas too.

I told her she could.

She seemed delighted.

Adam laughed.

"She's going to make this her job forever."

I smiled.

"Your father would approve."

I thought about the way Walter used to sit in that same living room.

His hat crooked.

His voice loud.

The children laughing.

The presents scattered everywhere.

I missed him.

I always would.

But I was no longer afraid that his traditions would disappear because he wasn't there to lead them.

Lily had taken his place beside the tree.

Adam was learning to repair things at Westdale.

Renee and Patricia were volunteering.

And I was still making pecan pie in my mother's old dish.

The family had changed.

But the things that mattered were still here.

I leaned back against the couch.

Then I looked around one more time.

Everyone was together.

Everyone was welcome.

And for that Christmas, it was enough.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: As My Family Settled Into a New Christmas Tradition, I Understood Why Walter’s Greatest Gift Had Never Been His Collection

Lily stood beside the Christmas tree with Walter's hat pulled down over her ears.
